With the l0 arc all wrapped up, maybe we can talk about two elephants in the room?

the absolute dire way that moon was treated as one of TWO recurring named female characters in all of four episodes

the fact that we've had two dark skinned heroes and both of them lost their powers

The dead wife trope is fun when we apply it to Nice, but seeing Moon get fridged and having her death used as a shock factor MULTIPLE times over the course of four episodes is so rancid. Moon's entire thing in-story is how she's tied to Nice and can't have agency on her own. Having it happen on a metatextual level where she gets hurt/kidnapped/killed to give L0 trauma is just. Ironic and sad. Can't a girl have plot development without it being tied to a male character.

I was so excited when Blankster showed up like fr a hero whose punches destroy memories???? How cool is that???! And then he was 1. Depicted as a bad guy (cleaner=shady) 2. Shown to have cheated in his boxing career 3. Basically played for jokes so that L0's power up and win against GE could be more impactful. It would be a different thing if there was any other positive depiction of a dark skinned hero out there but the only other one we've gotten was Firm Man and he also lost his powers. Like. Once is fine. Twice is when I start squinting. If it happens again that's a pattern. I don't know, you don't have to take anything away from this if you don't want to. Just something that I'm personally going to be keeping in the back of my mind.

Yeah the Moon thing is like... They pretty much cornered themselves into killing her off. I mean, if they had done nothing with that moment of Lin Ling seeing her corpse on first meeting it would have been a plot hole. But it definitely raises the question, what's better? Dealing with a plot hole or not having your female character fridged for once?

Especially given the overall treatement of Xiao Yueqing. I mean, they manage to make her humane and relatable, her hostility to Nice and heroics completely understandable. None of her attitude is framed as unresonable or her throwing a tantrum/being ungrateful. And then on top of that, she avoids the obvious death flag by ducking out of here, getting a well deserved vacation.

Admittedly her being on a deserted island means her choice of it as a place for retirement was less than ideal... And that is, in and of itself, sort of the Problem. Why couldn't she have just been happy, alive and away? The narrative justified it well: she wanted to leave as soon as possible, and her wish to neither be recognised or bothered was so strong her portal gun puts her in a place where she wouldn't be.

However... that's not the point. In the moment this is all well and good and even makes us glad that Lin Ling found her. And, to give them a point in this less than stellar set-up, I do like Lin Ling coming with the portal gun, giving her the mean to save herself instead of making her reliant on him as her rescuer, rather than the more classical twist of "he saves her and she's so very grateful". Which is why this being the moment she's killed off, the moment she is Stuffed in the Fridge let's not mince our words, is made that much more enraging.

Like. You were so close guys! So damn close! And I definitely don't mind the tragedy aspect but boys does it not occur in a vacuum. No better reminder than a show about heroes to show off some of the genre most controversial and dated tropes I guess...

Always kinda thinking about the phenomena of what I'm calling 'left behind girls' who are extremely young girl antagonists who are utilised by an older male antagonist (often a father), who very clearly require help, yet are not given any of it, especially in comparison to characters adjacent to them, such as siblings (often brothers). Most often they also have a distant/neglectful mother and seem to carry characteristics of the hyperfeminine "mean girl" character archetype and they often have this weird madonna/whore thing with a female protagonist. Havent yet found a way to fully articulate how I feel about all the characters on this list but I knkw there are more. Like Susan Pevensie from Narnia for example.
