I was in a very toxic family situation and moved out in February. I was unable to take them with me because I was not in a stable enough living situation to take a 75 gallon tank (I took my betta). I was occasionally allowed to come clean the tank but it was few and far between. My father luckily fed them for me when he was home but that’s about the extent of the care they received. My mom decided over the weekend that if I did not take them by Monday at 7 am she would dump them in the local lake. I tried rehoming for their own good at one point but unfortunately there wasn’t much interest, and the interest that did exist was the type that would put them in a ten gallon. It was a bad situation all around, but I am beyond grateful to have them back.

Trying to decide on new goldfish filters...

I just got my goldfish back from a nightmare situation. They look terrible, and the filters sound as bad as the fish look. I have a 75 gallon tank stocked with two fancy goldfish with two aquaclear 110 filters running. One filter is doing okay besides some slight fluttering, the other one sounds like rocks in a blender. So I have a few options here that I would like opinions/advice on.

Option one, and I don’t know how viable this is, would be to just say eff it and shut the one filter down without replacement since the tank is under stocked and the filter is rated to 110 gallons.

The second option I’m considering is just switching to a large sponge filter. I see a lot of breeders use these in their set-ups which leads me to believe it’s not bad? Also energy efficient and cost friendly?

Option three is to bite the bullet and buy a canister filter. They honestly scare me but if it’s going to be the best/only option then it is what it is.

Any thoughts, input, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
