The WNDB team is thrilled to host the cover reveal of ON THE EDGE OF GONE by corinneduyvis!! The book releases in March 2016.
Here are some details about the book from Corinne herself:
One of the goals of We Need Diverse Books™ is to enable underrepresented authors to tell their own stories.
Denise, the protagonist in my next book ON THE EDGE OF GONE, is not all me—but a lot about her is me, and a lot of her story is the kind that I don’t see being told. As a teenager, I found precisely zero autism narratives that I could see myself in. While there is far more choice now, there are still frightfully few books I’d feel comfortable handing to an autistic teenager going through the same things I’ve gone through. I wanted to change that. I wanted—needed—to see more girls like me. Autistic girls. Insecure girls. Troubled girls. Girls trying to untangle what they know, feel, and have been told about themselves.
Best of all, I wanted to see a girl like that smack-dab in the genre I’ve loved my whole life.
ON THE EDGE OF GONE is set in the final stages of a mass exodus as the world tries to flee from a destructive comet … a comet that hits Earth within the first chapters. The book is part spaceship sci-fi, part contemporary character study, and part disaster novel.
It will release in March 2016, and I’m so very excited to share the gorgeous cover that my publisher Amulet Books/ABRAMS created.
January 29, 2035. That’s the day the comet is scheduled to hit—the big one. Denise and her mother and sister, Iris, have been assigned to a temporary shelter outside their hometown of Amsterdam to wait out the blast, but Iris is nowhere to be found, and at the rate Denise’s drug-addicted mother is going, they’ll never reach the shelter in time. A last-minute meeting leads them to something better than a temporary shelter: a generation ship, scheduled to leave Earth behind to colonize new worlds after the comet hits. But everyone on the ship has been chosen because of their usefulness. Denise is autistic and fears that she’ll never be allowed to stay. Can she obtain a spot before the ship takes flight? What about her mother and sister? When the future of the human race is at stake, whose lives matter most?
ON THE EDGE OF GONE will be available for pre-order at all the major retailers soon; in the meantime, add it on Goodreads or keep an eye on the book at Corinne’s website!
About Corinne
A lifelong Amsterdammer, Corinne Duyvis spends her days writing speculative young adult and middle grade novels. She enjoys brutal martial arts and gets her geek on whenever possible. Otherbound, her YA fantasy debut, released from Amulet Books/ABRAMS in the summer of 2014. It received four starred reviews—Kirkus called it “original and compelling; a stunning debut,” while the Bulletin praised its “subtle, nuanced examinations of power dynamics and privilege.” Find Corinne at her Twitter or Tumblr. She is a co-founder of Disability in Kidlit.
I apologize for the blatant self-promotion, but as I know a lot of our followers would be interested … Here’s the cover reveal for an upcoming book by one of the Disability in Kidlit editors, Corinne Duyvis (aka me). Although autism isn’t the whole story in On the Edge of Gone (there’s that comet and all!) it’s still a pretty big part of the book. I weaved a lot of my own experiences into Denise’s story, and I’m so happy to get to share her with the world soon. Not to mention being able to add to the unfortunately tiny collection of autistic protagonists written by autistic authors! I can’t wait for you all to meet Denise. (Shameless self-promo out.)
I liked this photo that someone shared on my Facebook feed :)
This is really important! A growl is a dog’s way of saying, “Please stop, you’re making me uncomfortable.” If you don’t stop when the dog growls or actually punish the behavior, the dog will learn that growling doesn’t help her, and so she must find another way to defend herself. Here’s a good article on the subject: http://www.nj.com/pets/index.ssf/2015/05/how_to_handle_a_growling_dog.html
To commemorate Natural Palettes reaching 100,000 followers, I just wanted to share a few of my favorite palettes! Thank you for all the support, and I hope this blog continues to bring inspiration!

I DON’T CARE HOW MANY TIMES I’VE REBLOGGED THIS IT WILL NEVER END
hahaha
if you dont have me on facebook you are probably not missing out on any posts but the comment section is important too lmao
I went to the Renaissance faire dressed as a warrior. I had a real sword with me, too. I was standing (in character) next to a sword-fighting ring, where kids of all ages got the chance to pick up a sword and challenge the champion. Some woman walks by, with her little girl. The girl starts walking towards the ring, saying she wants to fight. But the mom pulled her away hella sharply, and was like, “That’s for boys.” You don’t want to be a BOY, do you?” And the girl looked around and saw me. I think she thought I was a boy; I had my hair in a ponytail, and was wearing a hood. So she comes up to me and asks me, “Do you think girls can be fighters, too?” And her mom looks like she’s silently gloating. Like she thinks I’m going to say no. So I take off my hood, untie my hair so that it flows freely, and kneel before her. And I’m like, “Milady, anyone can be a fighter.” I swear, the look on that mother’s face made my day.
This post was good but then it got better
Okay, this is a slight topic diversion, but in response to the above comment. I’ve volunteered at the CT Ren Faire for years now. For the last 5 or so I’ve worked in the game section, and we have a game similar to the above comment called “Smite the Knight”. I’ve been in the ring before, it’s a ton of fun getting to run around with the kids. The main goal is entertainment. Have a good shtick, keep the crowd engaged, and let the kids have a good time.
In both work and observing, I have learned something about kids. A lot of parents try to get their boys to go fight. Of the young ones that do, they tend to be shy. You get the ones who just swing the boffer swords around with no regard for life, but, mostly, they’re reserved. It’s adorable. I mean, they’re kids.
But the girls. THE GIRLS. Holy crap. I swear, the pinker the dress, the more taffeta and glitter…the more intensity. I remember, the first year I worked there, one girl came in, grabbed the biggest sword she could, and WENT TO TOWN on our knight. Lifted it over head, let out this primal scream and mowed him down. Homeboy is 6′2″, she was FIVE. And once he was in the fetal position (He was fine. It was for show.) on the ground, she stopped, put her foot on his chest, and yelled “I AM A FIERCE PRINCESS!!”. Later in the day when she walked by a couple of use yelled “Ah! It’s the fierce princess!” and she stopped and flexed. It was the best, and I will never forget that girl.
this was so cute lma o and made me giggle
This makes me happy haha
The Morning After I Killed Myself
The morning after I killed myself, I woke up.
I made myself breakfast in bed. I added salt and pepper to my eggs and used my toast for a cheese and bacon sandwich. I squeezed a grapefruit into a juice glass. I scraped the ashes from the frying pan and rinsed the butter off the counter. I washed the dishes and folded the towels.
The morning after I killed myself, I fell in love. Not with the boy down the street or the middle school principal. Not with the everyday jogger or the grocer who always left the avocados out of the bag. I fell in love with my mother and the way she sat on the floor of my room holding each rock from my collection in her palms until they grew dark with sweat. I fell in love with my father down at the river as he placed my note into a bottle and sent it into the current. With my brother who once believed in unicorns but who now sat in his desk at school trying desperately to believe I still existed.
The morning after I killed myself, I walked the dog. I watched the way her tail twitched when a bird flew by or how her pace quickened at the sight of a cat. I saw the empty space in her eyes when she reached a stick and turned around to greet me so we could play catch but saw nothing but sky in my place. I stood by as strangers stroked her muzzle and she wilted beneath their touch like she did once for mine.
The morning after I killed myself, I went back to the neighbors’ yard where I left my footprints in concrete as a two year old and examined how they were already fading. I picked a few daylilies and pulled a few weeds and watched the elderly woman through her window as she read the paper with the news of my death. I saw her husband spit tobacco into the kitchen sink and bring her her daily medication.
The morning after I killed myself, I watched the sun come up. Each orange tree opened like a hand and the kid down the street pointed out a single red cloud to his mother.
The morning after I killed myself, I went back to that body in the morgue and tried to talk some sense into her. I told her about the avocados and the stepping stones, the river and her parents. I told her about the sunsets and the dog and the beach.
The morning after I killed myself, I tried to unkill myself, but couldn’t finish what I started.
I needed this tonight
If you’re looking for a sign not to then this is it. My inbox is open if you think talking to a stranger will help.
This is devastating and precious. Wow.
