The romance movies and television shows on your laptop screen always ended the same way.
The male lead would push the female lead behind him, glare at the guy that got a little too close to her, and utter that line that made the comment section swoon. “She’s mine.”
You paused the video, the screen casting a soft glow across your bedroom. You couldn’t help but think of Rin.
Rin, who didn't do “swoony.” Rin, who walked beside you with his hands shoved deep into his pockets, looking like he was constantly meditating on a blood feud.
He never glared at guys who looked at you on the train. He never wrapped an arm around your waist when someone asked for your number at a cafe, he just stood unbothered, waiting for you to decline so you both could keep walking.
Did he just...not care? Was it a lack of jealousy, or just a lack of interest?
The question festered in your mind until a rainy afternoon when you were both holed up in his room.
Rin was stretched out on the floor, doing his usual post-training stretches, his breath coming in slow rhythms. You were sitting against his bed, staring at him, the silence between you heavy with your own thoughts.
“Rin?”
“What?” he asked, not opening his eyes as he folded forward, touching his forehead to his knees.
You swallowed hard, pulling your knees to your chest. “Can I ask you something? And you have to promise to not divert away from it.”
That made one of his eyes open. He straightened up, sitting cross-legged, wiping a stray drop of sweat from his temple. “Depends on the question is.”
You took a breath, letting the insecurity out before you could lose your nerve. “Why don’t you ever tell people I’m yours?”
The bluntness of the question clearly caught him off guard, because he froze up.
He stared at you, his expression unreadable, those eyes scanning your face as if trying to find the punchline.
When he realized you were serious, his shoulders dropped.
Surprisingly, you did not hear a groan or see him roll his eyes.
“Because the only person you belong to is yourself.”
You blinked, the answer catching in your throat. “But...in movies, and just normally...guys usually want everyone to know. Like a status thing. Or because they're jealous?”
Rin leaned back on his hands, tilting his head up toward the ceiling. “Then those movies are written by idiots. And guys who do that are insecure.”
He looked back down at you, his gaze stripping away any doubts you had.
“I don't need to mark territory or say some cringey ass line to feel secure. You’re with me because you choose to be. If I started acting like I own you, it means I’m afraid you’ll change your mind the second I look away.”
He shifted forward, closing the distance between you until he was sitting right in front of you.
He reached out, his fingers gently catching your chin, forcing you to look him in the eye.
“You aren't a trophy I won, and you're not a piece of property I have to guard,” he said. “You're you…And the fact that you choose to stand by to me is enough. I don't need to tell the world anything.”
The remaining doubt in your chest melted away, replaced by warmth,
It brought a sting to your eyes. He wasn't indifferent, he just respected you.
Rin let go of your chin, his thumb brushing over your cheek before he leaned back. His lips softening slightly
“Now stop watching those trashy movies,” he muttered. “It’s clearly rotting your brain.”
You laughed, leaning forward to bury your face against his shoulder, wrapping your arms around his neck.
Rin grunted at the act of affection, but his arms found their way around your waist anyway, holding you close in the quiet room.
The passion he gave makes your thoughts drift apart, following his trace through the empty air, finding pieces of him scattered softly across this quiet room.
It’s dangerous how easily you lose yourself here, even hours after he leaves, this room's warmth never seems to cool.
You can still feel the ghost of his touch, remembering how, in a heartbeat, the past innocence quietly faded into something much darker and heavier.
Every time he is near, his fingertips on your skin feel like a whispered spark, igniting a fire you know will eventually consume you. You know exactly how dangerous this is. You know the amount of pain it leaves in your heart.
Yet, you surrender to him, willingly.
So when the lock clicks later that night, you don't hesitate. You push the door shut, locking out the rest of the world, and for a second, neither of you breathes.
The room is dark, lit only by the pale glow filtering through the window.
You step closer, reaching out until your fingers trace his jaw. When you lean in, it feels like pressing the moonlight onto his lips.
The relation between the both of you was sacred, and hidden. He whispers something against your skin, a soft sound that you know will linger by your ear long after tonight.
“It is you, it has always only been you…”
There is no turning back now. You both know the risks, but the pull is too strong—it’s like the moment you both bite into a rotten apple, tasting the forbidden and letting the consequences fade away.
The next morning, the sun is harsh, cutting through the blinds and shattering the illusion. You sit up, your heart dropping as you spot a flash of metal on the mattress. It’s his silver bracelet, left behind by the pillow.
It’s staring right at you—the proof of what you did. Love crossed the red line, and as much as it hurts, you ask yourself one question.
‘how could I pretend not to see it?’
You could not hide from the truth anymore. You pack your things, swearing to yourself that this is the last time.
But you’ve made this promise a hundred times before. You walk away in silence, knowing that every attempt at quitting is a scene with no witnesses.
Nobody sees your tears, nobody knows the agony of trying to break free, because nobody even knows you two exist in each other’s world.
But then the loneliness creeps back in, heavy and suffocating, until you find yourself right back in his room a few nights later.
You throw caution to the wind, desperate to feel anything else and set fire loose this night, letting the passion consume you both, burning away all the loneliness that kept you awake for days.
You tell yourself you don't want to sink again, that you just need this one moment of warmth.
But as the fire burns out and the morning light returns, you look at the empty space beside you.
The warmth is gone, the illusion is dead, and you are left deserted after falling.
