i totally forgot i had this book ! it’s a collection of fairy tales by the brothers grimm.

figured that flipping through a few of the stories would be a fun morning read !

before i got started on some, y’know … work.

but, hey, at least i’ve got mordecai here to keep me some company!

Here’s something I’ve noticed in Lackadaisy, Viktor and Mordecai fight a lot…

Like here in this comic

But then a little while later they both seemed to have forgotten about it.

These interactions aren’t just limited comics too, there are also examples in the shorts, like Stratagem.

If anyone else were to make a comment about the trauma that Viktor went through in WW1 then they probably would’ve been strangled but Viktor only glares harshly at Mordecai.

Not to mention that he could’ve thrown the chess board at Mordecai but threw it at the other cat who did nothing instead.

Maybe because he’s used to Mordecai? I mean any Cat in the Lackadaisy world probably knows Mordecai doesn’t mince his words.

This dynamic is even present in what could only be assumed to be the earliest days in their partnership.

But again they both seemed to move on from it in less than 5 minutes.

Maybe it’s because you build a certain trust with people who you trust to have your back in a gunfight? Or because Mordecai and Viktor only get authentic connections when fighting with each other? I don’t know.

They developed the type of bond where they bicker and fight a lot, but are the only two that understand each other.

They don't hate each other even afterwards, because at the end of the day they know when bullets start flying they got each other's backs.

Call it friendship or partnership, but these two tom cats are closer than you'd except. 👀

Till Mordecai messed it up. :T

Is Mordecai aware of the effect he has on women?

It has been explained to him, but he still can't easily distinguish a flirtatious gesture from a threatening stare-down. He doesn't particularly like being in anyone's crosshairs for any reason anyway...and he's suspicious that this is all some kind of elaborate prank.

I wonder if Mordecai in his adolescence was ever bullied or had pranks pulled on him so much. He thinks that every genuine feeling twords him is some kind of prank?

Maybe he had a crush on someone who found out. Besides being honest with not having the same feelings, turned it into some cruel joke.

Mordecai has his iron walls up for a reason, and due to his past. His feelings are always back and forth with "do they actually like me, or is this some kind of prank?" 🥺

It does seem like the sort of reaction someone who has experienced a great deal of mockery and teasing would develop

Even if our speculation about the reasons for his lack of interest in women is correct, he would have exactly the same reaction to either a man or woman flirting at him

"I'm waiting for the punchline...or the literal punch"

Could explain why he is very distant with people. The only people who he formed a bond with was Atlas, Viktor, Mitzi and Ivy. The people he cares about because everyone besides his biological family has treated him poorly. 🤔

Also any women who's come to him, Mordecai just acts awkward as hell. Lol

When it's big men...well we all know 😏

The question we should be asking Tracy is "does Mordecai know the effect he has on men?"

I just wanna dig deep into this angry moody pissy character sooooo badly! I wanna know who his crush was when he was in his adolescence!!! 😭

An understandable interest

But Tracy might rightly argue that when it comes to storytelling, some things are better left to reader/fan interpretation of suggestive details about a character rather than explicit confirmation

A guy can only dream, I like to think it was a boy crush and Mordecai doesn't know how to deal with those types of feelings. We both know how he acts around the ladies and how he is around big guys. Lol

You know, I was trying to draw these guys in a Zootopia-ish style at first, but then I started looking through the concept art for secret of Kells and I guess something in my brain just shifted because the two styles just began melding into one. Not very close to... either style. But I'm still happy with it.

The designs are also kind of an amalgamation of their comic and animation designs. That and I always forget Calvin has 3/4 sleeves.

IDK if anyone has asked you this before (or if I was the one that asked it) but are there any movies or tv shows that inspired you when developing or writing Lackadaisy?

Very many things. Too many to name. Sometimes it's hard to even identify what things inspired you because it happens without you realizing. I've always enjoyed history and historical fiction, but I think prior to working on Lackadaisy, I had written most gangster-genre media off as superficial morality tales (it might seem like all fun and games but don't become a crime kingpin, okay?) or power fantasies aimed at hetero male audiences. Looking back, probably the Sopranos, Deadwood, and Coen Bros films did a lot to change my mind and spark my interest in deeply flawed, morally bankrupt, tragic-but-funny characters scheming their way around. As I was developing Lackadaisy, I absorbed just about every gangster film and Jazz Age-themed thing I could find. Watched lots of old Cagney and Bogart films. Cagney often portrayed very vulnerable, even fragile characters, really. I think it surprised me how clearly some of those old movies telegraphed the tough-guy element as a complete facade, how much more psychologically layered some of the gangster types were, and how much ambiguity pre-Hays Code films toyed with. (There's plenty of stuff that's just kind of vacuously silly too, but that can be fun in its own way). Anyway, I watched all of the self-serious stuff and sprawling epics - Once Upon a Time in America, Road to Perdition, Scorcese, Coppola, etc., and mixed in a bunch of Marx Brothers and Jeeves and Wooster too. Add some Don Bluth and other animated influences, and I guess that's why Lackadaisy is the way it is.

Miller's Crossing always stood out to me

Watching someone try to juggle and play the angles of a dangerous, tragic, and sometimes darkly comedic situation and a colourful cast of misfits and thugs
