Reading a book about the psychology of friendship (that, oh by the way, taps the ace and trans communities in its discussion not as clinical categories but by including anecdotes from people in those communities!!) and somehow it encouraged me to quadruple down on saying:
We literally do not have enough friendships. Our culture's obsession with romance over friendship is shockingly new (1850's on) and it is having a serious impact on our health across the board, specifically men. This problem has become sharply exacerbated in the last 20 years.
We need more friendships. We need more friendship in media. "But what if they kissed?" What if they didn't, and the love that was there mattered anyway??? Take my hand. Imagine this with me. A relationship unbound by law or expectation. People who choose one another again and again. To stay in each other's lives when there are no societal tethers holding them together.

Summary of fic series: Hualian… but Metal.
Summary of fic: During the mid-autumn festival, a fateful encounter allowed Hua Cheng to take his all-time idol, Xie Lian, away from the grasp of Immortal Records —the most important label for rock and metal music in the country— who were trying to coerce him into signing up for a nightmare. Retreating with him and some members of his own band to a vacation home away from the Capital, Hua Cheng now must make the best out of the couple of days they’ll spend together to gather what he needs in order to save Xie Lian’s music. The task isn’t easy: Hua Cheng can’t tell Xie Lian about his plans without breaking his trust and scaring him away, there are more interests at play, and back in the Capital, Jun Wu loses no time summoning Feng Xin and Mu Qing, Xie Lian’s former bandmates and friends, to set a snare in which he can catch Xie Lian as soon as he returns. Dishonest debts, broken feelings and stolen songs start to surface in the muddled waters.
Summary of chapter: Pei Xiu makes an attempt at a grown-up conversation with his uncle. It doesn't go very well.

After five years, three months and one day, I'm happy to announce that I have updated my only unfinished Zelda fic!
Summary:
Unofficial continuation of "A Most Convenient Marriage"
Zelda is at war to recover her kingdom and, in desperate need of an alliance, she asks the hand of Prince Sidon in marriage, giving her champion to him as a proposal gift. Link is devastated by the cold move of the princess, but happy to serve under Sidon, his most treasured friend. The relationship between champion and master grows and changes into something else, but then, a self-proclaimed sorcerer called Circe seizes the strategic Leias fortress and Zelda asks her trusted champion and her future husband to recover it for her. They succeed, but for a price, and now Link is on a race to get Circe's head, by request of the princess, but for the prince's sake.
I’m down so horrendously bad. I’m even more obsessed with this character than I was before drawing his design. (Art is by me, design is by the author).

I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.
It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.
anyway the thing about fanfic is that it's not essentially bad or good; it's essentially amateur. some people are absolutely out there writing award-worthy prose (some fic writers ARE award-winning writers IRL!), but that's not the point. the point is that we're all telling campfire stories. it's a community, and it's a way to spend some more time in the worlds and stories that we love.
I often wonder what happened to authors of unfinished fanfictions.
I hope they’re having a nice life
we absolutely are not and that unfinished fic haunts us to this day
