on russophobia in the hetalia rp comm
i suppose you could call this a further delve into my last post regarding eastern europe portrayal in the comm. however, this is something even more in depth.
one constant i have seen through several years is a permeating sense of, i don’t want to say slagging off but it seems to have to be said like so. i have seen an incredible amount of slagging off on russia. russia is a country that is incredibly misunderstood around the world, even by its own neighbors and takes time and patience and willingness to learn about. i know many claim to be fervent about the subject however, i have and still will come here and see many with a negative attitude of russia, not only ic but INCREDIBLY, in the modern day with a wealth of information at our fingertips, ooc as well. have we reverted back to the seventies? when we could gain absolutely no information due to the knowledge vacuum? i would hope not. which is why i am making this post.
i see people reblogging from legitimate nationalist sources and people, be them ukrainian, belarusian, polish, etc. and use that as your entire foundation for why you must act so awful towards russias. that does not exclude russia roleplayers either, i see many of them slap on an attitude that is either incredibly stereotypical, or bordering on 2007 deviantart grimdark under the guise of being poetic, which i also think is a grave misunderstanding*. you can not apply western principles to a country so separated in many respects from the west. russia is not your go-to well where you can draw up a character that is everything pagan, black metal, tortured soul, and snark enthusiast and expect to have a good character, no, what you must have is background, and a foundation that is NOT a western scholar’s PhD thesis.
what i am trying to get at is… this ‘russia is a dark deep place with terrible history and worse leaders’ and ‘all slavs vs russia’ attitude has got to stop, or at the very least take a turn onto a better path. the russian people are neglected in your thinking on both sides. out of your character you are probably already thinking, due to recent events “YEAH FUCK TO RUSSIA! HOMOPHOBIC NATIONALIST SHIT HOLE!” but like most people fed from media outlets you fail to realize the whole situation, as if the people truly have a choice to speak up against putin. remember those anti-lgbt laws passed? you REALLY think the people deserve to have that blanket thrown over them again? let’s change it a little bit…

here we are, coming full circle yet again to shit on the russian people, when it is not the people, but the politicians. does the saying not go “history is written by the victors”? PLEASE quit perpetuating the image that has been fed to you of larger figures and louder voices when the whole is incredibly different. please read your sources with a grain of salt. learn for yourselves and not based on western understanding and labels slapped upon a nation with eastern values.
*inb4 BUT IT’S MY PORTRAYAL! well, if you’re doing a disservice to an entire nation, then maybe you need to take off your art-fart glasses for a second and read this.
