kind of nuts the sheer number of nuclear plants that were shutdown or cancelled in the 80s, to be replaced with coal and gas, due to 'public protests and outcry' when you also consider, compwritively, the protesting and riots in response to police brutality and healthcare (AIDS crisis) and how the government blatantly did not address or respond to these public concerns. like, the hippy environmentalist movement was definitely a thing, i am not denying that there were environmental concerns and an established subculture around these beliefs, but its just frusturatingly obvious that the only a reason a smaller group of hippy protestors had so much more sway than, say, the entirety of LGBT or black ppl in america was due to literal coal and gas infiltrators and lobbiests with financial incentive to do away with nuclear energy. and its nuts how ppl didnt understand that back then and continue to not understand that today
