This is my main, and it's where I post about fandom: mostly Night at the Museum, some Loki, and a little bit of Over the Garden Wall. You can also find my fics on AO3 under the same username
@tay3t is my side blog, I post about anything non-fandom there (mostly ancient Egypt)!
I also run The NATM Search's blog, @natmsearch, and am the editor of its newsletter, The Night Guard's Notebook!

Summary:
He had ruined everythingāhis one chance to prove that he was not this. Not the villain everyone thought he wasābut he was, wasn't he? That was who he was. There was no changing that. He would always be a villain.
Max's past (the Isle, abusive father), and his future (panic attacks, Felix).
This man is making me insane--you might even say heās making me ... mad!
I need headcanons of tranfem Max post-canon (maybe when she comes out to the rest of the crew š„ŗ)
She doesn't want to make it A Big Thing, so she really downplays it and acts like it's just a little update before they head to their first class of the day: "Morning. By the way, I'm not a boy. Anyways, I'm going to be late--"
But Luis grabs her by the back of her coat before she can slip away so they can all fawn over her and express their support. She rolls her eyes and grumbles through it all, even though it actually means a lot to her.
"Is... 'Max' still okay?" Red asks carefully.
"It's gender neutral," Chloe points out.
She shrugs noncommitally, but Hazel sees right through her. "There's gotta be something better. How about Maxine?"
She snorts. "Very creative."
"I'm trying, okay?!"
"Madelyn!" Pink gasps.
"Absolutely not," she says, scrunching up her nose. "Besides, I don't..."
"What?" Felix asks when she trails off.
She heaves a long-suffering sigh, clearly embarrassed, but pushes through it to say, "I don't know if I want to be named anything along the lines of... you know. Mad. I've been called that enough times in my life."
Several of the HK's wince, thinking back to times before they were friends when they would toss that word in her face.
"Look, it's not important," she says, moving her hand through the air as if waving the notion away. "Just Hatter is fine."
"Hatter?" Luis echoes. "That's so... formal."
"You've called me that plenty of times," she says with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, but... I didn't really mean it in a nice way," he admits. He snaps his fingers. "I know! Hattie?"
Her eyes widen, and she quickly tips her hat down to hide her pleased expression. "Sure. Yeah. That works."
"Perfect! Then come on, Hattie, we really are gonna be late now."
Hattie doesn't protest when he claps a hand on her shoulder and practically shoves her through the school's entrance.
I always think of the description I saw years ago: Self-imposed deadlines don't help me, because I know the person who set them, and they're full of shit.
Give yourself the treat before you start. I'm serious. And ideally during the task and afterwards too.
Executive dysfunction comes from a lack of available dopamine. Common advice is wrong. You need to provide your own dopamine before you can start. Otherwise you're trying to run your car on empty.
"But what if I still don't do it" well you already weren't getting it done anyway. Now you have a little treat. Try again later.
You deserve kindness and care even when you aren't being productive.

I give my students a LOT of techniques for starting writing when it feels overwhelming or daunting, but one of them is exactly this: dopamine load BEFOREHAND. It may sound weird to people on tumblr dot com, but a lot of people seriously struggle with executive dysfunction when it comes to writing literally anything, to the extent that it can cause such symptoms as panic, depression, and AI chatbot use.
I usually suggest this technique as a "Reverse Pomodoro." In the original Pomodoro, you work for 25 minutes and then take a break for 5 minutes (the times vary, but that's the essential ratio). People with executive dysfunction often find this insurmountable, and they get even more frustrated, and then the task seems even more difficult. So instead, flip those times.
FIRST, spend 25 minutes doing something energizing and engaging that you like to do. Not scrolling social media passively, not watching tv, not napping. Try something like colouring, doing yoga, running/walking around the block, talking about your favourite tv show with someone in real time, playing with the dog or cat, making and eating a lovely sandwich, hula hooping, something active. Having a little treat absolutely falls in this category!
(on the subject of little treats: refusing yourself food until you do work is for fucking Puritans and you can be kinder to yourself)
Then, after 25 minutes (or however long it takes to eat the sandwich or finish the yoga routine, it doesn't have to be exact), spend 5 minutes writing (or doing whatever you're struggling to start). Most people can coax themselves into doing something they find difficult for five minutes, if they have already filled up the joy/energy/engagement bucket. You can put a timer on for the 5 minutes if you want, or if you find that annoying, just work for as long as you like.
The other key is: don't push yourself to keep going when you're frustrated or tiredāthat will just reinforce the negative belief that you already have, which tells you that this task is painful to do, and needs to be avoided. If you've commonly had to force yourself to do this kind of task, that's likely part of why you think of it as painful and have trouble starting it now. Also, you should just, at a basic level, try not to put yourself in pain for the sake of productivity. So just do it till the good feelings run out. Then start hula hooping or colouring again for another 25 minutes. When the tank's refilled, try another 5 minutes of work, if you can. Adjust times to taste.
Not every technique works for everyone, but I've seen this one work for many students who are genuinely and seriously disabled by executive dysfunction. And many people find themselves getting more and more excited and engaged in the "difficult" taskābecause the good feelings from the hula hooping carry over, and because they're suddenly able to do the task without feeling pain, and feel accomplishment without feeling pain.
I agree with everyone else who's said he's a nerd, specifically about chess. He got into it as a kid living on the Isle when he found a chess book that had been thrown away, and he pieced together a chess set from various bits of trash. The first thing he did when the barrier came down was buy himself an actual chess set (using stolen money, of course)
His other hobby is magic tricks, which he got into after meeting Felix. He's also a massive science (/magic) nerd
Harry is pretty close with Hazel and visits her regularly, so Max knows him fairly well. He thinks Harry's super hot, which Hazel teases him about mercilessly
As others have speculated, he and Luis are exes; Luis broke up with him because of internalized homophobia and gets together with Red because he can tell she's pretty and he likes her as a friend, and he's trying so so hard to be straight. Red gets together with him because she's a disaster gay and doesn't know how to confess her feelings to Chloe. They will break up
On that note, my sexuality headcanons:
Max: Omni with a preference for men
Hazel: Omni with a preference for women, but I could also see her as a lesbian
Luis and Felix: Gay
Red and Chloe: Lesbian, although I could also see Red as some sort of bisexual
Felix and Max are in a casual relationship/are friends with benefits
He enjoys casual sex and hooking up with his friends, but he isn't always the best at establishing boundaries
His favorite kink is biting; he enjoys biting other people, but he especially loves being bitten
He's subby 90% of the time he's having kinky sex, and if he had to choose between being a top or a bottom he would 100% be a bottom
He wears his hat all the time because Maddox gave it to him and it's the only thing his father has ever given him
He was abused (definitely verbally but maybe also physically) by Maddox as a child. That's also why he learned to pickpocket; his father didn't always feed him--either as a punishment or because he was too distracted by his inventions or plan for revenge--so he had to fend for himself a lot while living on the Isle
He wasn't allowed to have friends growing up, so he was a loner until he met Hazel and the Smee twins, and eventually Felix, at Auradon Prep
He gets panic attacks. He tries to hide them from everyone, but both Hazel and Felix have found out
