absolutely devastated that I can't give santiago this spell
I love dnd encounters that are just "you stumble across something fucked up" especially with a game-savvy party that expects combat when you start over-describing something.
Last night I had them stumble across a still pond deep in the woods that just reflected back dead, rotted versions of themselves, and they absolutely expected that the gruesome visions would rise from the mirror surface and attack. And when they didnt, the party didnt get the satisfaction of fighting and defeating them. They had to just walk away. Rather than being an anticlimax, the fact that they had no clear resolution added a lot to the tension of the session!
Adding to this, they came across a pixie hamlet in the woods. They were anxious about the overarching threat and were trying to find answers, and the pixies let them rest there and served them a sweet, fizzy, citrusy wine that's a favorite in their culture. So much so that they named it after themselves - Sprite.
It's important to psychologically torture your players sometimes. It's enrichment.
new treasure lmao
top tip for gms: if you dont want your players coming up with some stupid fuck name for their party just have an npc call them a collective nickname like youre gently offering food to a scared stray dog from a distance where it feels safe enough to not bolt on sight
i had my players face off against a group with a cool name, to set a role model, and you know what they did? killed them, stole their exact name, and tacked on "#2" at the end. there's no winning. i can't win.

Inspired by recent discussions of an Actual Play.
certain types of NPC just require you to treat them like a PC when deciding on their actions. is this course of action a little silly? yes. are they gonna do it anyway? also yes
this was about vick throwing herself through a window btw ^_^
This is legit. I sat down with a copy and counted the seconds in each fight scene. There's lots of swinging but the number of successful attacks is in keeping with the attacks that character would have in a round! The only thing that isn't compatible with rules as written is the black dragon's breath weapon, and even that can be written off easily as flavor text and a feat.
my spanish test had a question about someone called santiago and when i saw it i thought "oh i haven't seen santiago in weeks :(" as if he's like. i guy i can go visit and not a character i made up
