Different Types of Ruts

Different types of Heats

Natural ruts

Definition: Natural ruts are organic ruts that are not triggered by an omega’s heat. An alpha’s body does not need to prepare for reproduction or extreme biological change, so natural ruts are not as frequent as heats. Ruts have a similar purpose to sexual heats, to find a mate and breed. Natural ruts last 1-4 days.

When: Natural ruts occur 2-3 times a year in alphas of all ages. Ruts tend to stop/slow down around the age of 55.

How to handle: Easier to go through with a mate/partner, however, if there is no partner, fellow pack members and loved ones can calm the alpha down and turn the rut mellow and non-sexual. Sex, cuddles, keep fed and hydrated.

Symptoms: Possessive behavior of mate and pack members, aroused state, restless, produces protective and, usually, seductive scent.

Induced ruts

Definition: Induced ruts can occur for two reasons. 1. An alpha’s mate/partner goes into heat. 2. They take a supplement that will send them into rut if they want to have pups. It is important to note that ruts cannot be caused by unfamiliar omegas. When packs were more primitive and had to fight for territory, rival packs would send their omegas in heat to lure enemy alphas in and kill them, leaving the alphas’ pack vulnerable. Induced heats last the duration of the heat which induced it or, if medically induced, about 1-3 days.

When: Occurs when a significant other goes into heat or medically activated. Common in alphas ages 18-50. Induced ruts can occur as often as once every two months.

How to handle: Let them be with their partner. Sex is the best solution.

Symptoms: Possessive behavior of mate, aroused state, restless, produces protective and seductive scent, fever.

General Rut Headcanons

My Version of Omegaverse

Ruts are the alpha equivalent of heats, and occur far less frequently than heats do. Unlike omega heats which occur tri-monthly, most alphas get an annual rut which lasts much longer too, lasting from 14-20 days between the months of September to February.

During an Alpha's rut, they will typically become irritable and experience mood swings. They will also experience libido highs, but the pattern is different from an Omega's heat.

There are two stages of rut:

Pre-Rut

When pre-rut occurs, an Alpha's body begins to release pheromones meant to attract potential mates. However, this pheromone has a dual-purpose, as responses to it can vary depending on the sex of the individual. Alphas have mixed reactions to it. If the alpha detecting it isn't in rut themselves, they will have very little reaction aside from being wary of the individual. If an alpha who is in rut detects it, they will take it a challenge, and may be urged to seek out their competitor and brawl them.

During this stage, an alpha's libido rises but it isn't by much. The alpha may experience craving for physical contact or affection, and will spend the 5-7 day length of pre-rut seeking out a mate to spend their rut with. Mated alphas will try to court their own partners, while unmated alphas may go out to try and find one. Alphas will be aggressive and may have trouble controlling focusing on tasks. Alphas will be less irritable towards omegas, but they will have beef with other alphas. If they find a partner, they'll start denning in their home to invite their partner to nest.

Rut

During the main phase of rut, which lasts for the remainder of the period, alphas will withdraw into their own home turf and stay there. They will experience a number of symptoms, common ones including: dehydration, major irritability, fever, insomnia, over-sensitivity, headaches, and a major spike in libido. Alphas can take care of themselves during rut but it will be difficult. Alphas will show sexually receptive behaviour but their waves are less intense, and each wave can have hours between them. When an alpha is in rut, they'll try to scent their property and anyone they deem to be in their immediate social circle.

When an Alpha's rut begins to end, they will return to normal without many issues.

Other Rut Headcanons

An Alpha's rut takes place in the winter because in the winter, humans are usually shut indoors and mating becomes easier. (Also I checked if humans have a "mating season" and apparently, most babies are conceived during fall and winter).

Not all alphas have their rut occur between September and February, but most do.

When an Alpha's rut will occur changes as they age. Younger alphas typically have their rut earlier, between September and December. Older alphas typically have their rut between December and February. This is theorized to occur so that younger alphas have a better chance at getting their foot in the genepool before the older alphas.

Unlike heats which can be skipped when an omega is feeling stressed, alpha ruts will occur no matter the circumstance, unless the alpha is gravely injured. Winter is usually a hard time as it is, so alphas have evolved to ignore the environmental pressures of winter.

Rut symptoms lessen as an alpha ages, becoming more tolerable. By the time an alpha is 30 and up, their ruts may be half as difficult as they used to be. By the time they are 50, an alpha may not feel any rut symptoms at all aside from a modest rise in libido.

Headcanons for alpha behaviors when they go into rut?

I have some hcs for this already (x). This is an explanation (x). There will more than likely be some repeats, lol.

- alphas would be very irritable and they will get ticked off very easily. so like if they are shoulder bumped by accident, they will almost nearly knock that person out.

- they will be very quiet during this time, not wanting to talk to anyone. only if it is an omega.

- they are sometimes embarrassed by their strong scent so they will often try to layer up clothes to mask it

- they will often try and flirt with any omega they see

-* like pre-heat omegas, pre-rut alphas also nest in a way. But this nesting is less for themselves and more for a potential partner.

-* they will scent e v e r y t h i n g and the neighbor’s dog of you let them, this is due to them compulsively needing to mark their “territory” via their scent glands

-* pre-rut alphas get more competitive than usual

-* pre-rut alphas will trigger heat in mature omegas, especially their mates, so like omegas (who get heat-leave), alphas get rut-leave

-* They also get rut-leave because alphas get pissy and moody in pre-rut

-* alpha’s get broody during pre-rut and will aggressively cuddle their mates and growl, snarl, cuss-at anyone trying to interrupt that cuddling

-* if an alpha takes a suppressant at the right time before rut they won’t have the hormones that cloud their judgment but will keep the sex drive

- they will run very hot, hotter than omegas would in heat until they release their first knot

- ` Their sense of smell sharpens. This is so they can more easily find an Omega in heat.

- ^ i think that they would only search for an omega that’s in their heat or in pre-heat, or find an omega whose scent they absolutely adore

- ` In most alphas go into a selective mutism state, as their mind is focused on mating and breeding. So if an alpha is in a rut, they talk less. Usually only talking to their mate, or wanted mate.

- ` Alphas have very basic nesting instinct when they go into rut. Because a long time ago, alphas would build nests in an attempt to attract mates.

- this is a time that they can get the most things done, so if they have a hefty to-do list, it will get done before rut starts. this is because their instincts are so heightened

- ` They are obviously very aroused when in rut, but they don’t immediately become erect. They only become erect when presented with a willing Omega. Because, in their basic instinct, unmated alphas will fight each other for an omega. Being erect can cause of source of weakness.

- You would barely see an Alpha out and about in pre-rut because of the possibility of going feral on a random omega

ABO Headcanons: Dens

Nesting is a very common aspect of omegaverse fics, and I love it. But I’ve been thinking; if omegas have nests, what do alphas have? I propose dens.

Alphas turn the main room they sleep in into dens by scenting the ever-living hell out of them, claiming the room as theirs. Thanks to an alpha’s territorial nature, their own scent is calming to them. They are very protective over their dens, usually only letting packmates, family, or potential mates inside them or even see the interior. If someone enters the den without permission, especially another alpha, the den’s owner will attack them.

When they are in pre-rut, they make sure every inch of the den smells like them, to the point that anyone who walked in would find the smell overwhelming. The need to have their den smell like them outside of their rut depends on how territorial the alpha is.

If an alpha shows an omega their den, it is usually as a courting technique. The alpha would try and decorate their den beforehand to make it presentable. If the omega says they like it, they are accepting the courting. If they say they dislike the den, it is a rejection, and will usually result in the alpha completely redecorating their den our of shame and embarrassment.

When an alpha and an omega get mated, the omega moves their nest into their alpha’s den.

"leaving passive aggressive notes for each other in the laundry room when they forget to take their clothes out of the dryer" is too good because eventually tony is left with no choice but to pull a joey tribbiani and start taking rhodey's clothes when he leaves them in the dryer 🤭 so one of rhodey's hoodies go missing and the next day tony is wearing it which is only partly out of revenge, the other part is because he couldn't do his own laundry bECAUSE RHODEY LEFT HIS CLOTHES IN THE DRYER

oh that's brilliant.

the funny thing is, rhodey was actually the one to show tony the ropes the first time he turned up to their dorm's laundry room with a basket that was spilling over because he'd try to put it off for as long as possible.

rhodey had gone to the laundry room at 3am because he'd woken up in a cold sweat when he realized he'd forgotten to take his stuff out of the dryer again. as he was pulling out his clothes from the machine, he had watched tony walk in with a pile of clothes that probably weighed more than him. tony had blanched when he saw another student already in there and wanted to turn tail and run because he had deliberately waited until he was sure the rest of the building was asleep so he wouldn't embarrass himself in front of anyone.

but rhodey is the nicest person in the world and, after watching tony struggle for several minutes, had gone over to him to teach him which settings to use for what clothes. and remembering why he was even there so late at night, he had told tony, "and don't forget to take your clothes out of the machine before someone else gets impatient and does it for you" before leaving to go back to his room.

so tony took that advice to heart and the next time he was doing laundry and saw that the only dryer that wasn't running was full of freshly warm clothes, he pulled them out and left an apologetic note for that person to find.

when it happened again, he recognized the pizza socks from the last time and left a slightly snarkier message asking if this person had memory problems. when he came back for his clothes two hours later, he saw a post-it stuck to his dryer with an equally snarky response and that was how the note war began.

tony stole the nasa hoodie the seventh time Pizza Socks left his clothes in the machine because 1) it looked comfy as hell, 2) maybe that would finally teach the guy a lesson, and 3) he wanted to see if he'd meet the guy if someone recognized it.

(that was how clothes-stealing gremlin tony was born)

they finally met the week after, when rhodey ran into the laundry room 15 minutes after the dryer cycle was supposed to end hoping to catch the thief and found tony shoving one of rhodey's button down shirts into his hoodie's kangaroo pocket. no, not tony's hoodie. rhodey's hoodie, that tony stole and was wearing right at that very moment.

rhodey pointed and screamed, "YOU! i taught you everything you knew and this is how you repay me?!"

tony yelled back, "then you should have known better!"

so rhodey grabbed his laundry basket and instead of leaving with it, he sat down on one of the lopsided couches in the room. unnerved, tony asked him what he was doing and when rhodey said he was going to wait right there until tony's laundry was done so that he could steal his clothes, tony obviously couldn't let that happen.

he turned on the machine and sat down on the other couch, determined to stay until the dryer cycle ended. Pizza Socks looked sleepy as hell. tony could stay awake for three days straight. it was fine. he could leave with his clothes unstolen.

they both fell asleep.

rhodey woke up first though, and because, once again, he is the nicest person in the world, he unloaded tony's laundry and left the basket next to him before going back to his room to get ready for class.

and if he showed up to his seminar wearing a black sabbath t-shirt that fit a little too snugly that was no one's business but his own.

Imagine Tony thinking that his father will be proud of him for once after graduating MIT at only 17 and at the top of his class. Only to come home to realize that it's still not enough. It will never be enough. He will never be enough. No "I'm proud, son", no " I love you, boy" not even "good job". Instead Howard will tell him that he needs to make something with his life, acting like Tony's done nothing this whole time.

Imagine Tony smiling bitterly at his father, grunting a sarcastic remark while actually he really just wants to cry. He's been proud of himself, so fucking proud. Jarvis had been proud too, had said that his father will be proud. But that's been a lie, cause his father seems to hate him.

Imagine Howard and Maria leaving in evening. Tony's mind only spiralling around one topic. He'll never be enough. And he gets in his car, bc why should he stay at this place all alone.

He feels empty. Just empty. He knows that if he stops now, he'll break. Just like he's done before. One stop now and he'll get a drink, then two, then three. Until he's not able to even remember why he'd been upset in the first place.

Two hours later he arrives at Rhodeys. But the lights are off - the house empty. Of course, the grad party. Rhodey's out celebrating with his family.

He sits down on the front steps, having no other place to go. And his mind is still blank. He blinks, staring straight into the gravel path to his feet. Mind flooded with moments he'd rather forget.

It takes another hour for a car to pull up in the driveway. Rhodey gets out, from the back, jaket dropped over his shoulder. He spots the dark figure first. His parents see Tony and before his mom can say something Tony gets up, standing straight in front of his best friend.

"Sorry, I- I didn't know where else to go."

But Rhodey shakes his head, stepping closer. He sees the wobbling chin, knows that tone. His parents leave them alone, getting inside while Rhodey stays there.

Tony takes one look at his best friends eyes and breaks. He doesn't mean to, doesn't wants to - but he can't stop himself. A fist pressed to his mouth to keep the sob in, tears start to trail down his face. His throat feels raw.

Rhodey places a warm palm on his arm and Tony looses it. The hand that's been on his mouth, going to his eyes, his other hand shaking.

Rhodey gets him to sit down again and sits down besides him. He let's Tony cry. It feels like an eternity until his breathing seems to calm.

"He hates me." Tony finally says.

"He's a bitch." Rhodey gives back, wrapping one arm around the youngers shoulder.
