Our fellow was raped several months ago while she was on her way to fetch water. She was alone because the rest of us had gone to the UNHCR field office to collect our documents. There was no water at home, and she wanted to cook for us, so she went by herself.
At the water point, she was attacked and raped by four men. What hurts me most is that I was not there to protect or help her. We reported the case to the police, but despite promises of an investigation, we have received no updates and no justice.
Thankfully, she did not contract HIV, but she became pregnant as a result of the rape. Doctors told us that ending the pregnancy would be too risky and advised her to continue it until delivery.
Two days ago, after nine painful months, she gave birth to a baby boy. During delivery, she developed serious complications and needed emergency surgery. The UNHCR hospital referred us to a private hospital, but we had no money to pay. I begged the doctors to save her life, and thankfully the surgery was successful.
Now we are burdened with a $750 medical debt. We also cannot afford the medicines she needs, or basic items for the baby such as clothes, diapers, and other essentials. She is still recovering and requires continued treatment.
The stress and pressure are overwhelming, and I feel lost because I do not know what to do next. I do not want to lose her. For her safety and dignity, I also want to keep her identity private.
I am sorry for only sharing this now, and I am sorry for bringing my problems to you so often. This is the difficult situation we are facing, and I do not know where else to turn.
