Therian Rituals (beginner friendly)

when i was first introduced to the community, a few elder therians gave me some ideas and suggestions for rituals to better connect to your spiritual self and identity, or just self care in general. while these may not work for everyone, i figured i’d share incase it works for some!

please feel free to include your own, as well as reformat these to suit your needs :]

Grounding

grounding can look different for everyone. for me — it’s sitting outside in the warm sun, hands/paws on the ground, soaking in the earth and the energy around me. this could look a lot like meditation, but i try to aim to be present and exist in that exact moment as it comes. listen to what’s around me, the scents, the feel!

Visualization

visualizing your theriotype during meditation or in general can get a lot of pent up anxieties or energy out. imagine yourself running, swimming, howling, anything that makes you happy or gets that enrichment for your identity! vocalizing either in that visual or out loud helps, too.

Foraging Walk

touching grass, literally, haha. take yourself on a walk (safely) and forage as you do. as you do — smell the air, use your senses you normally wouldn’t heighten on a day to day. scent. visual - scan the ground, look for things. track your movements and be aware. lean into instinct!

Theriotype Journaling

journaling can look very different for everyone. the advice i was given and utilized was using a dedicated journal for your theriotype, and just doing what comes to mind. your day, documenting what your day to day life would look like as your theriotype, sketches, comments, etc etc etc all of it! it’s about making space for your identity :>

Moon Cycle Reflections

this could look different for everyone. journaling and reflecting on the new moon (new beginnings), or hanging out with the pack/group of therian friends and doing something every full moon. it builds a sense of reflection and companionship and gives you something to look forward too!

Alter Space

building a little dedicated space to your theriotype to honor and connect to them! for me, this helped me mentally feel more clarity and connection to my theriotype! i usually utilized this in tangent with meditation :]

I hate how nonbinary and trans intersex people are left out of trans discussion.

We can’t be sorted into TMA or TME easily, so people who use those labels tend to sort us based on our assigned sex.

Labels commonly used by intersex trans people are called useless.

Nonbinary people aren’t even included in trans rights posts half the time.

Intersex people are used as a way to prove that trans people exist.

Nonbinary people’s identities are disregarded and we are either considered basically just our assigned gender/sex, or basically a trans man/woman, depending on which thing makes us easier to hate or disregard.

It feels like binary and perisex trans people don’t give a shit about us, and it also seems like they don’t think the specific oppression we face is real. If they do, they don’t fucking talk about it.

Accepting and supporting trans people means accepting ALL trans people. Not just the binary ones, not just the perisex ones, not just the white ones, not just the abled ones, not just the ones you’re comfortable with. ALL OF US.

Talk about the lesser represented trans people, PLEASE. Talk about people with unconventional identities. You don’t support trans rights unless you support those of us with more complicated or conflicting identities.

A tip for animals that want to mimic scenting behaviors and scent glands: spray a liberal amount of perfume/cologne/fragrance mist around the areas where your glands would be (or where non-functional glands are), then practice scenting against things like wall corners, doorways, the legs of beds/desks, plushies, even other people if they consent, by rubbing those areas against said object or person. You should do this about 30 seconds to 2 or 3 minutes after applying the spray.

In some cases you can find concentrated pheromone oils/sprays for game animals. These are meant for hunters but nothing is stopping you from using it as a casual outing scent, other than some people being irritated by the smell. I wouldn't recommend putting them directly on the skin, I've gotten some on my hand and had mild irritation afterwards, but you can do roughly the same act by spraying it on clothing and rubbing the clothing against objects.

I also would recommend sticking to cheaper sprays for this since you'll have to spray *more than average* for anything to transfer, unless you're doing it seconds after applying which could feel unnatural. Theres also always the alternative of just spraying it directly on the object which takes less sprays for any scent to stay, I think thats what most people already do, but again it'll feel less natural doing it that way.

As always you can research where your species' scent glands are and their scenting rituals if you're unsure, or you can stick to the most efficient glands spots and rituals. I do a mix of both depending on what I'm scenting and where I am.

Why'd we stop using the furry/DC shorthands? (/gen)

I feel like they're useful as a starting point for conceptualizing what your species is (albeit the furry code is for furries but it does have a couple of sections to indicate how much you identify as or with your species, hinting at nonhumanity to a degree, but not nearly as much as the dragon code).

Its almost like a biography you can fill out as you figure out what you are (this might just be a me thing as I love to write about my kintype) It could act like a mark aside from the other fancy unicode alternatives which rarely display as they should if you're not using an IPhone. And it also tells the reader what you are, so you can find kin siblings that share your experiences easier.

Heres the wikifur links (obligatory grain of salt warning) to both of them if you want to read more about them. Again, one is for furries so its catered to roleplay and fantasy while the other is for dragons specifically, but both have sections to specify something outside of those.

A radiocollar is a device placed around the animal’s neck, like a real collar, and it’s mostly used on wildlife.

WHY DO I FEEL CONNECTED TO IT❓

Everytime I come across a picture of a wild canine or feline wearing one of these collars I immediately think “yup, that’s me”.

As a domestic dog, I’ve always felt very connected to dog collars, and this connection doesn’t end when I’m feeling more wild.

I’m a wild animal, but my life is constantly “monitored” by humans: I have to depend on them when it comes to friendships, relationships, food, house, school/work, public transport,… all of these things can’t miss in my life and, in order to have them, I have to be with humans and to depend on them.

Humans also take care of my wellbeing, like doctors and psychologists. And the humans I live with actually track me on a geo locator app to make sure they know where I am in case something happens and they need to reach me.

On this aspect, it’s something kinda “philosophical”: this connection reflects how I feel in my life with humans. Wild animals normally shouldn’t wear collars, but these devices are necessary for their individual and specie wellbeing, and so humans are in my life.

But there’s another aspect: the more animalistic one.

The tought of being an animal with a radiocollar makes me really euphoric bc it’s like being a registered wolf, an “official” wolf, if that makes sense (and a lioness aswell).

I would love to have a real radiocollar as gear, but it would be really expensive and I don’t know if you can just randomly buy one.

So, a few months ago I’ve decided to give myself an ID number like the ones radiocollared wolves are identified as (based on their birth date, etc.).

My ID number is 1309F.

HOW DID I CHOOSE THIS ID❓

13 -> it would be 2013, when I started to experience my first animalistic experiences.

09 -> I’ve born in 2009.

F -> stands for “female”, my gender.
