Very unusually for me I've had a restorative Saturday practice. I never do that! I couldn't help it after watching students all week in their setu bhanda I've been looking forward to a supported version on my whale back bender. The rest just followed naturally. Following on from the teachers demonstration at Christmas I've been having fun playing around with the big toe pose padangusthasana. To give myself a challenge last week I practised putting it into a sequence to help me get the forward extension and balance in Pavritta ardha chandrasana it turned into quite a nice flowing forward movement. So from padangustasana I swapped the big toe hand to the other, taking the left fingers to hold the right big toe and took a long step back with the left leg into Pavritta trikonasana, then reached the hand forward, brought the standing leg straight and the back leg lifted effortlessly. I had to prepare the arms and legs first as you can see. This sharpness that was brought to the arms and legs assisted very controlled eka pada, leg down in both sirsasana and salamba sarvangasana, using s chair to you don't lose control over either leg which sometimes happens when we come to the floor. Last week was all about the big toes. We lengthened them and kept them in contact with the floor so have some very stable, still asanas. Sealing the inner edge of the foot in asanas like Pavrittaikapada trikonasana. These lovely long inner edges of the feet lifted us so lightly into our inverted poses, but can we keep extended the inner feet with the challenges of poses like Pavritta sirsasana #yoga #Iyengar #iyengaryoga #bksiyengar #yogainstructor #yogainspiration #yogapracticeathome #yogapractice #yogasequence #yogatherapy #yogamagic

Here's quite a long post, for me. So at the end of term I often ask students, you, if you have request postures. The Manchester university class asked for supta virasana, parighasana and navasana. So it's my job to put these in a class plan. In my own practice I've been working on catching the foot in Bharadvajasana to work on my stiff shoulders and upper back. Combined with all this, I love being organised and thinking creatively, (how can the same set up be used throughout a practice), with the props which is also essential for a safe and organised class so I started with a small belt loop around the feet for dandasana, I kept that small belt loop throughout the practice for dandasana, parsva dandasana, bharadvajasana 2 for the foot, (but it could be used for the arm too in b1, remembering the inprint of the belt on sirsasana, for the foot in Pavritta janu sirsasana, for the feet in urdhva prasarita padasana, to help pull the legs up and lift the chest up in navasana. Some will need to change the size of the loop during the sequence. So the first drawing is just what happened when I got on my mat and first started with my ideas, the second picture is how this formed into a class plan for everyone after my personal practice adding my thought and feelings on sequencing. What was interesting about the all the request postures was how they help with fat around the abdominal area. All the toys came out for the sequence for colds. I've not got a halasana box so I utilised the back bender and bolster for my legs. I've thoroughly enjoyed the sequence, it's brought my cold right out to the forefront so now I can shift it on.
