Figure some YOI folks may still follow me, here's the news.
The fact remains that we know Yuuri’s a sweet bean with a liiiitle bit of a dickhead streak because we see things from his perspective, or from Viktor’s, and Viktor is down horrendous. There’s a fair to middling chance that prior to the Sochi banquet and the year of increasingly public shenanigans with Viktor, many other skaters thought Yuuri was kind of stuck up. (See my post about how the Katsukis are probably solidly middle class or even wealthy for their area, and the way Yuuri’s schoolmates may have perceived him as a result)
Anxiety has a funny way of doing that, making you appear unsociable and increasing your social isolation as a result of simply being shy. :/
I mean, the very beginning of the show, where Viktor offers him a photo and Yuuri just… walks away without a word. We know that he’s having an absolutely horrible day and week after some stressful months. And his brain is being a bitch and twisting things. We know that. Anybody watching irl would think it’s rude af. It’s like the accidental-rivals fanfictions, which are *chef’s kiss* 🤌 Noice! Yuuri is probably very easy to take out of context, because he’s so busy picking himself apart over things he only assumes other people think that he misses the reality of it.
Like I imagine someone in 17th place congratulating Yuuri on making the top 10 and Yuuri getting all “oh it’s so terrible!” About it and having that guy be like 😑😑😑. Ahhh, maybe not. He’s probably at least somewhat better trained than that 😂. Then again, his demeanor with both Viktor (at first), and later Minami might indicate that as a matter of fact he has not received any kind of PR training.
In-universe, the other skaters and the figure skating fandom in general probably have some interesting and varied opinions on our beloved Katsudon, especially before he cratered at Sochi, got drunk and revealed himself to be a chaotic dance machine, disappeared, came back, ranted at a press conference about love, got tackled and kissed by Viktor on live television, put a ring on it, set a world record, and tackled Viktor back.
☺️ It’s why Viktuuri is such a perfect couple. They’re both flawed but in ways that drive each other to be better? If that makes sense? Yuuri’s chaotic tendencies shake up Viktor’s very disciplined life. Viktor’s better awareness of other people, despite his lack of connection with them (he’s been an observer of life until Yuuri), causes Yuuri to be more considerate. Paying attention to each other comes with the side effect of also paying attention to other people, and it’s good for both of them. They each need the other to be emotionally vulnerable, so they have to become emotionally vulnerable themselves. And they call each other out on their bullshit but in a loving way that the other person is able to receive. #goals 💖
I forget, is there any real indication that the Katsukis have money troubles, or is that just fanon? If there is, is it purely based off of Unreliable Yuuri’s perception? Cause like. They own a business, and it might be the last Onsen in Hasetsu, but that kind of indicates that either they have good business, or they had more reserves to keep going longer than everyone else.
I guess they could have just got lucky, but either way, being the only one left standing means that whatever business there is goes to them. They have an effective monopoly in a tourist town. Having grown up in one of those, even in the leaner years those were always the well-to-do families. Yeah small town wealth often pales in comparison to big city wealth (though not always. I went to school with the granddaughter of a man who owned a Major League Baseball team, and when I say major I mean MAJOR, like household name even to people who don’t pay attention to sports) but clearly they could afford figure skating, which is a notoriously expensive sport.
Even being friends with the local rink owners, they might have got a good price on rink time, but I’m sure they paid. Same with Minako’s dance lessons. Main Character Syndrome aside, it would be unreasonable to expect people’s time and resources to be donated on the scale it would take to produce an elite level athlete. Plus skating lessons, plus coaching, plus skates and costumes and travel, and even more, I’m sure. Figure skating is right up there with ballet and equestrian for extremely expensive sports that are difficult to break into from a lower socioeconomic class. Once you start performing well there may be some return on the initial investment, but said initial investment is huge.
Anyway, I’m just saying that the Katsuki’s are probably comfortably middle-class at least, and possibly quite wealthy in comparison to most families in their town. Our dear sweet anxious Yuuri with the Resting B Face, how many of his classmates thought he was hopelessly stuck up? Spending all his time skating and competing nationally and internationally before ever graduating high school, and his parents just bankrolling it? Must be nice! 😩 Then he goes to university overseas and comes back with a world champion boyfriend whose face they’ve probably seen on a cologne ad or the cover of a fashion magazine or at least Sports Illustrated.
Some people just have all the luck, how’s that silver spoon taste? 🙄
So I was going through the Anime Midwest recording provided to me by @baby-in-the-inventory of Manabu Otsuka. Just a few minutes after he talked about how making Victor and Yuuri’s relationship romantic was to Sayo [here] he was asked about the ethnic diversity in yoi, specifically asking about Leo and his departure from the White American stereotype.
Otsuka talked about the importance of ethnic diversity and seemingly just compared it to the importance of sexual orientation diversity?? I have no idea whatsoever what else he could mean by including them in this. The only thing you could say is that they’re an interracial couple, which once again…relationship is a focus. Also importantly, he’s not speaking on behalf of himself as much as Sayo’s and Kubo’s intentions and what they were going for.
(also as a note, this is a transcription via the interpreter who is also a Mappa employee)
I went to watch the next-day viewing of yesterday’s Yuri on Festival event, and this time I took notes for the drama so I’ll write a more detailed summary, also because this one isn’t going to be sold on DVD. I believe other people have probably written reports too, but in cases such as this I think “the more the merrier” because it’s not recorded so it’s better to have more accounts. Also, now you’ll start seeing more Japanese reports & art too. Most people were keeping quiet out of consideration for the ones who could only watch the viewing and didn’t want spoilers.
Official title of the drama: “Fundoshi da yo!!! Sekai Metsubou Daipinchi Hasetsu Kunchi Spiritual!!” which roughly translates to “Fundoshi!!! The world is in danger of being destroyed. Hasetsu Kunchi Spiritual!!”
It was in 3 parts, separated by game and information corners.
I hope it’s not too confusing, but especially the last part is impossible to summarize decently because they talked a lot and I couldn’t possibly take note of everything, not to mention what they say is mostly crazy stuff, lol. For some parts and lines I double-checked looking at other Japanese comments online. If something is not clear feel free to send me an ask.
Hi everyone! I noticed recently that the "KAZAKHSTAN 101 OR HOW TO OTABEK" post seems to have been taken off of tumblr? The author's whole blog seems to have been wiped. Do you know if this is archived anywhere? Is there a mirror, say, on Ao3?
Hello!
Thankfully, I managed to find what I believe is the original post. Here it is! The post is archived in plain text under the cut.
Hope this helps!

KAZAKHSTAN 101 OR HOW TO OTABEK
THERE YOU GO YURI ON ICE FANDOM.
Disclaimer: this is in no way a fully comprehensive guide. This is just me trying to put together basics for people who are unfamiliar with Kazakhstan/Kazakhs to start their writing/research.
I am an ethnic Kazakh female, citizen of Kazakhstan, Almaty, bisexual, upper middle class, currently in college in the US. My experience is in no way representative of all kazakhs and Kazakhstan citizens. However, I think it’s pretty close to Otabek’s.
This is really, really long and kinda convoluted, but if you can bear it –– welcome!
Name: Many people have talked about Otabek’s name. This is how you shorten it –– “Bek”, “Beka”, or “Beks” if you wanna be really familiar and laid back.
Kazakhs don’t have middle names, we have patronymics. They are formed like this: the father’s name + ‘uly’ if the child is a boy or ‘kyzy’ is the child is a girl. For example, Otabek’s childrens’ patronymics would be Otabekuly and Otabekkyzy.
About Almaty and almatinians: Ok I’m so happy Otabek is from Almaty, I really don’t know much about life in other cities or rural areas. Almatinians rarely do. Comparing Almaty lifestyle to the rest of Kazakhstan is the same as comparing NYC to the rest of America –– it’s not representative of the quality of life in the country, like, at all.
Almaty has 2.5+ million population, and it grows every year. It’s a cultural and economic centre of the country. Apples originate from Almaty (!!!), hence the name from “Alma” –– apple. Almatinians are usually stereotyped as fast, brash and snobby –– kinda like New Yorkers, right? Almaty is much more tolerant and progressive, and also more ‘Western’ than the rest of the country in terms of mindset. Almatinians kinda look down on non-Almatinians, and really dislike the capital Astana because of all the funding and attention it gets.
Almaty has a great ethnic diversity –– main groups are Kazakhs, Russians, Uygur, Koreans, Germans, Jews, Uzbek, and many more. Though stereotypical jokes are generally acceptable, outright hate and discrimination against an ethnic group is not tolerated. Many foreigners visit here for business –– mostly Americans, Western Europeans and Chinese.
Almatinians love: coffeeshops, mall sales, cool cars (Hello Otabek’s motorcycle), smoking hukkah and vaping. They are usually concerned with status and try to show off their wealth. You can see people of all kind of different style and background in Almaty, fashion shows are held there, contemporary art and indie-music congregates there, along with all kinds of fancy ass crowd. It is a really interesting and kinda exhausting scene, especially if you are young and wanna have fun.
Language, culture, food, etc.
As an Almatinian Kazakh, Otabek is definitely fluent in both Russian and Kazakh, and probably has a very good grasp on English. He is a master of shala kazakh. Shala kazakh is a magic language that only city Kazakhs are privy to. It’s basically a wild mix of kazakh, russian and some fashionable english slang thrown in there. It’s usual for me to start a conversation with “OMG bro” and then kinda pull my speech together, substituting kazakh and russian words with each other and pepper it with “cool”, “ok” and other english exclamations. It’s not grammatically correct and is kinda lowbrow, but we all do it. Yes, even our parents. This is how Otabek sounds when he is talking to someone from home. Terrifying.
Nuclear family: City Kazakhs usually have two or three kids. That’s less than people have in rural areas. Children are important in Kazakh culture because they carry the family’s bloodline and history, especially boys. If you headcanon Otabek as having brothers and sisters, you are probably right! His family should be at least sort of wealthy to afford all the expenses of having a professional athlete for a child. Otabek has an expensive bike and his clothes look high-end –– he is definitely not poor.
Family in general. Kazakhs are close, VERY CLOSE to their family. Mind you, family is not just parents and siblings but also your grandparents, aunts and uncles and like all 173 cousins and nieces and nephews. Everyone is ridiculously involved in your life, always there with advice and complaints. You stay connected to your parents when you move out, when you get married, when you have kids, when you DIE. When Otabek misses the weekly skype dates or check-in phone calls, HE IS SHAMED SO HARD. Do you know grandma is worried about you, think about how old she is! Otabek’s relatives brag about his achievements like they moved him up the career ladder personally, with their own two hands. There’s nothing Otabek can really do about it tho he gets annoyed
Food: city Kazakhs have a very diverse cuisine. Traditional kazakh food is like 50% batter and 50% meat and takes long ass time to prepare so we reserve it for the holidays. My family loves fish, russian dishes such as borsht and blini, Uzbek lagman, Korean kimchi tho we try to avoid pork. And it’s not like we choose one day as a “Russian cuisine day”, we just kinda??? Deside to have some borsht today?? Almaty has lots of different restaurants, almatinians love sushi, pizza and pasta, shashlyk, all kinds of experimental foods and trying new things. Kumys –– mare’s milk –– is one of the things you should try in Kazakhstan as a turist, but I know many kazakhs who have never had it or don’t like it. They say it’s really good for you tho.
Holidays: ethnic Kazakhs in Kazakhstan celebrate: birthdays, New Years, Eid al-Adha which we call Kurban Bairam, Independence Day on December 16th and Nauryz on March 22nd. Young people kinda have get togethers on Halloween because it’s fun and a reason to hang out. Nauryz is one of my faves, it’s a pagan holiday of coming of spring and new life. On Nauryz, Almaty is adorned with flowers, yurts and giant swings are set on the city square, people wear traditional clothing and dance and play and eat a lot. My family also ended up celebrating Eastern Orthdox Christmas and Easter because each year our Russian friends invite us to hang out and celebrate with them, lol.
LGBTQIA+
Main principle is “Don’t ask, don’t tell”. General conflict avoidance protocols are in place. I personally know like 3 LGBT friendly hubs/clubs in Almaty. Nobody explicitly says “gay clubs” but people just kinda know what and where those are. There are get togethers and meetings you can attend to meet people, you can hang out with your significant other in public, hug, hold hands and no one would probably say anything. Colleges and universities are generally safe places, many of my friends are out in their college and don’t face any trouble. PDA will be frowned upon, but all PDA is generally frowned upon in Kazakhstan, even hetero. Feminist and sex-positive initiatives try to educate the populace and break the status quo, and are doing really well but the government’s disposition is homophobic. If your family is religious or traditional, they probably wouldn’t go as far as disowning you, but will probably pressure and guilt-trip you. LGBT+ youth generally plan to move somewhere else or just not settle. All of this is Almaty situation tho. Being LGBT in rural area is much more dangerous.
THE BEST PART: VOCABULARY
Ok this is what I find to be the easiest way to explain Kazakh to English speakers: think Turkish but written in cyrillic, with words borrowed from Arabic and Russian.
Endearments:
zhanym, жаным: my soul. Zhanym is everything to a Kazakh. You can use it for your family, friends, SO, I called my laptop zhanym today. It can be flirty, it can be serious. If you need Otabek to be affectionate with someone, use zhanym.
ainalaiyn, айналайын: really hard to translate but something like my precious?? Usually used towards small kids, but also if a Kazakh finds something really cute.
altynym, my golden baby. I love this one for obvious reasons, lol, hi, Otabek.
Mahabbatym, махаббатым, my love +
Suiktim, сүйіктім. my love, my dear. Kinda old fashioned but really romantic. I can see Otabek using this, but he will be teased and called an old sap if he does.
Kazakh have a lot more endearments, but most of them are for children.
Basic interaction and exclamations:
Iya. Ия. Yes.
Zhok. Жоқ. No
Rakhmet. Рахмет. Thank you.
Keshir. Кешір. Sorry.
Salem, Сәлем. Hello. A familiar greeting.
Sau bol, Сау бол. Literally “Be well” but actually means goodbye. Pretty familiar too.
O Kudai, О Құдай/O Allah, О Алла! Oh my god, obviously. Used in all kinds of different situations.
Oibai, Ойбай! How does one explain oibai. When a friend jump scares you, when you receive bad news, when you check your bank account –– oibai!
Abai bol, Абай бол. Be careful, is what your mom tells you when you go out.
Expletives and Swear Words. Yeeaaah the juicy stuff.
Zhyndy, Жынды. Crazy. If someone is being stupid or inappropriate, you call them zhyndy. When you tell a dumb joke at the familty table, mom smacks you upside the head and hisses “Ooooi, zhyndy!” When Jean-Jaques is acting a fool and makes out with his reflection, Otabek rolls his eyes and mutters “Zhyndy”.
Akymak. Ақымақ. Idiot. When someone is just dumb and not worth your time.
Ittin balasy. Иттің баласы. Child of a dog. It can be as harmless as “you pup” and as offensive as “son of a bitch” depending on the situation.
Kotindy kys. Көтіңді қыс. Squeeze you ass. God I love this one. When someone being an obnoxious wannabe, tell them they should squeeze their ass and check themselves.
Jean-Jaques: I am gonna be the King of the Grand Prix!
Otabek: Kotindy kys.
Shygasyn ba?! Шығасың ба?! You wanna go bro?! Ohh, someone is gonna catch these Kazakh fists.
Sigil. Сігіл. Basically go fuck yourself.
Sheshen ahmy/Sheshen sigem. Шешең амы/Шешең сігем. Your mother’s c*nt/Imma fuck your mother. REALLY FUCKING OFFENSIVE. Say this to a Kazakh if you have a death wish.
——————————————————————————————-
AND THEEEEEEERE YOU GO.
Again, this is just the basics. Do more research and talk to as many Kazakhs and Kazakhstani people as you can. We are a different but usually an interesting bunch. Thanks for your attention, Sawyer out!
Hello, sorry to bother you but are you able to see the rest of the post ''reasons why i think Yuuri and Viktor have already...'' because I can't access it ^^' ! I really liked this one and I want to see the rest again and your blog is the only one who seemed to have it :p !
Hello! Thanks for stopping by.
The worst thing about Tumblr is that when part of a post is hidden under “Read more...”, and the OP has deactivated, it’s impossible to see the full post again, since the Read More links directly to the OP’s (deactivated) account. Should this blog be revived again, we’ll take note to archive all future posts in plain text.
Sorry about that!

Yuuri didn’t actually mess up at the Sochi GPF theory
Okay so I was rewatching episode one when I noticed something from the news articles about the Free Skate failure:
The word “today” really did stick out at me here. As you know, both programmes would not be on the same day, so with the way this article is phrased, it sounds like he at least did okay during his Short. And then this comes directly afterwards:
I’m not sure about the original Japanese, but the use of “fell” here suggests a dramatic turn around. To fall, you must be at some height. And for them to make an article on it? No, Yuuri must have not been already in last place. We know Viktor must have been in first place, but Yuuri? I think he was fourth MINIMUM based on this. He even says in some internal monologue:
His ‘big day’? Why would it be a big day if he’d already done disastrously a day or two before in his Short? Surely, a ‘ big day’ would symbolise him possibly winning a medal?
If he was in last place already, he wouldn’t HAVE that kind of pressure. But all of these lines highly suggests to me that he at least had a shot at doing well during the GPF, maybe he was even close enough that he could have had a chance for a silver medal.
We find out during episode five that during the GPF, Yuuri can’t have scored above 94.36, as they announce it to be his personal best. Still, there’s no reason he couldn’t have scored around 90 ish, which when looking at the other scores that year, probably would have put him in a good position
I did the maths as yes, if you plug his Short score at around 90 it gives a realistic Free score considering he pretty much messed up all of the technical points.
Yuuri Katsuki was most likely in line for bronze or silver after his Short
What does this mean?
This little interaction of Viktor not recognising him as a skater is so much worse, as is Yuuri’s FS failure overall
tl;dr Yuuri actually did very well in his short last time
Edit: I’m kind of bored of getting the same response now so I’m just adding that I don’t really think Viktor actually didn’t know Yuuri as a skater. What I think is that Yuuri probably took the interaction to mean that, and he thought Viktor didn’t recognise him maybe.
テレビアニメ「ユーリ!!! on ICE」OPテーマ New Album “History In The Making” 2019.1.30 Release! [Download & Streaming] DEAN FUJIOKA - ”Let it snow! 〜Mandarin Ver.〜” ■■■■■■■■...
Mizuno stores in Japan are celebrating Yuuri’s birthday and have big boards up where you’re welcome to come leave messages and birthday wishes for Yuuri.
Reminder that this brand is an Olympic sponsor and they’re throwing birthday parties for a canonically gay anime character.
Okay so I see a characterisation I totally disagree with incredibly often, and that’s the fact that Yuuri, being stereotypically Japanese, is uncomfortable with PDA. And whilst I agree that this headcanon is kind of cute and allows for some great extra!Viktor content, I think it’s fundamentally wrong.
Yes this is the official art that triggered this in my mind. Just look how comfortable Yuuri is here, whilst essentially being cuddled by Viktor out in the open.
Look at him literally launching himself into Viktor’s arms.
That one time Yuuri declared his love for Viktor on television
He literally initiated this on international television
And let us not forget this kiss which he had no problem with
Again, yanking Viktor in by the tie literally because he felt possessive
Literally smiling at Viktor as he does this
You can even see people react to the PDA in this scene
There is no way you could call Yuuri passive in this moment
Let us not forget Yuuri literally grinding on Viktor
And, sober, straddling Viktor in public
Honestly, there is no real canon evidence in my mind to suggest Yuuri is uncomfortable with displays of affection. He either lets Viktor do it whilst making no effort to stop him (even if he is shown to look slightly embarrassed), or is the one initiating PDA. I think it could even be argued that Yuuri does it more than Viktor.
If this is Yuuri now, just imagine what he could be like a year or two on. Even as far as actually kissing in public, I don’t think I could call OOC. I feel like it’s the act itself Yuuri might be shy about, rather than if people are watching or not. In fact, I believe possessiveness is entirely in his personality.
tl;dr Yuuri Katsuki is grossly affectionate in public and should probably learn some decency
OK guys, in the lead-up to 2019 we’re now accepting music requests in revision of our music player. The music player has been a key part of our blog since its inception - and I’d like to thank everyone for their support of it.
The YOI wikia page has, however, compiled a list of skater programs and associated songs. Should anyone wish for the extraneous songs to be featured in the music player, do submit a request to our ask page with the appropriate link!
We also accept fan-mixes, as long as our music player accepts them too!
Again, thanks to all readers and followers for your support! We were born to make history!
hi, i came in here to read about a viktor headcannon some days ago and tooootally kept your blog open because the OST would start when I open my browser. good shiiiit
Thanks! Right now it seems that some of the links have failed... the perils of YouTube links *sigh*. We’ll definitely work harder to keep the music player updated for fellow Yuri!!! on Ice fans!
