For individuals still experiencing difficulty with understanding why the infrastructure of current police practices cannot simply be "changed" but rather defunded/abolished due to the inherent racism and discrimination the existing policies were built upon, I encourage you to read the passage below written by the author of "Hood Femimism" Mikki Kendall.
âWhen we talk about the dangers of white supremacy, we tend to do so around the idea that the anger of white men is inherently dangerous, while ignoring how often that anger is directed and weaponized via the fears of white women. White womenâs fears can undermine the futures of whole communities. Much is made of the âscarinessâ of the anger that comes from marginalized people, and every time feminism fails to challenge that fear, every time it feeds into the narrative that fear is a reason to uphold white supremacist structures, feminism fails at the very basic step of advocating for equality.â
Self-reflect and have (many) conversations with others who may also encompass an identity which provides them with a perspective shaped by privilege and power. In order for equity to occur, members of marginalized communities must be told they have a RIGHT to occupy every space, period. We cannot move forward efficiently, until systems and those who hold power and privilege (white men and women) truly see and comprehend the clear impact that race, class and gender have on ones ability to be safe and exist in any space we all share. Any rebuttal otherwise is a promise to continue perpetuating racist narratives and an America founded on discrimination, sexism, fear, and a government that debates the right to choose, the value of women in the workforce, and whether being a rapist is a reason to disqualify someone from the highest offices in the land.
What can I say, my hat came in the mail today.
I deeply enjoy a sunny Seattle day, just wish they werenât so sparse. âď¸ How many of yaâll find yourselves plant-obsessed rn?
What did you do to fight racism today?
Skated some hills in Renton yesterday! Obviously survived, but uhm.. definitely taking any recommendations for purchasing a helmet ;)!
