Not every vegan is white. Not every vegan is privileged. Not every vegan is upper class or even middle class.
Vegans of color exist. Lower class vegans exist. You don’t have to be rich to be vegan.
Stop fucking erasing their existence entirely just to discredit veganism.
I literally want to paste this all over tumblr
I actually dislike that animals are harmed by it. I hate it, and I agree that it’s a terrible thing. But guess what, how the fuck else are we going to test our drugs and other products that if left untested could kill us?
If all of you vegans...
Why being an environmentalist means re-evaluating your dietary choices and part of why I decided to make the leap from vegetarian to vegan. It’s difficult to give up a lifestyle suddenly so we can all do our part by taking baby steps towards a more sustainable future by perhaps choosing a few meals per week to be free of animal products or even just choosing more local options as it is more eco-friendly to consume products which do not have to be transported far distances. Alright. that’s it. I cannot fucking take it it anymore. Excuse my errors but I am PISSED.
I’ve seen this .gif on my dash several times, often accompanied by “omg so funny/i can’t stop laughing/turnt up/he’s having fun/etc. " I’m sure a lot of people don’t realize that they are literally laughing at an extreme case of animal abuse. Birds have a very, very sensitive and delicate respiratory system. It’s so sensitive, in fact, that the smoke from simply cooking food around them can kill them. Ever heard of the canary in a coal mine? This was practiced because birds react much more quickly to toxins in the air, and it would kill the canary before the toxins harmed the more resistant humans, alerting them to danger. Now, many mammals are sensitive to smoke. It’s true that you should never smoke around any pets, however, it will not immediately endanger a cat or dog from a single instance of exposure like it can a bird. That’s right, all it takes is ONE instance to give a bird lung cancer, infections, or possibly instant death.
THIS .GIF IS NOT FUNNY, IT IS AN IMAGE OF EXTREME IGNORANCE AND CRUELTY. Would you laugh at a puppy being fed a pound of chocolate, or a kitten drinking bleach? I don’t think so. "Oh but the bird obviously likes it!", yeah, I’m sure the puppy would be happily wagging away as it ate the chocolate, too. That’s because it feels good, tastes good, and because they trust their owners. Birds can have the intelligence equivalent to a four year old human child, so they learn to depend on and trust their owners. Lots of things taste and feel good that can kill humans, too!! You would eat a mushroom if it tasted good and you weren’t aware that is was deadly! Especially if your parents or friends handed it to you with an assurance of safety. An animal can’t decide or vocalize it’s desire to use drugs, so why force it upon them?
Here is a small selection of notes I’ve seen on this post, as well as asks I’ve received. Notice the cries of “social justice warrior!" (what?? how is that social justice? I don’t know.) Also, every. Single. Response. I’ve gotten to my polite, reasonable asks has been negative and accusatory.
(go through the notes. and if you don’t believe me, do a quick google search on the effects of smoke on birds. do it) ANIMAL ABUSE IS UNFORGIVABLE. IF YOU WILLINGLY ENCOURAGE, TURN A BLIND EYE TO, LAUGH AT, OR PERPETRATE ANIMAL ABUSE- YOU ARE A PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT AND DESERVE NO SYMPATHY OR RESPECT. YOU ARE LITERAL TRASH.
**(it’s hard to tell if that is shisha or weed being smoked from the hookah, regardless, both are strong enough to intoxicate a small animal ,and both are packed full of toxins.)
Biggest 'sacrifice' of my vegan journey so far has been giving up my contraceptive pill (which i took mainly for the agonising pain). Actually ive found that the pain isnt as bad as before and id reccommend rasberry leaf tea for anyone in the same position
Once, I watched as a mother sow cleverly engineered a prison break by loosening the hinges of her crate with her tongue until the front door fell off. After escorting out her piglets, the sow immediately began to do the same for another sow’s door. My coworker told me that several sows had orchestrated such ‘liberations’ in the past, and that those sows had to be slaughtered.

How a YouTube Video Is Endangering the World’s Only Poisonous Primate
by Jeremy Hance
It all started with a video: in 2009 a Russian man uploaded a video of himself tickling his exotic pet (a pygmy slow loris) from Vietnam onto the hugely popular site YouTube. Since then the video has been viewed over half a million times. But a new study in the open source journal in PLoS ONE, finds that such YouTube videos have helped fuel a cruel, illegal trade that is putting some of the world’s least-known primates at risk of extinction. Lorises are small, shy, and nocturnal primates that inhabit the forests of tropical Asia, but the existence of all eight species is currently imperiled by a booming illegal pet trade that has been aided by videos of lorises being tickled, holding tiny umbrellas, or doing other seemingly cute (but wholly unnatural) things.
"In Indonesia alone, where six species of loris occur, a minimum of 15,000 lorises are trafficked each year; this does not count the numbers that die before making it to markets," lead author Anna Nekaris, with Oxford Brookes University and founder of the slow loris-organization Little Fireface Project, told mongabay.com. “In Indochina, no figures are available, but slow lorises have often been the most frequently encountered mammal in markets. In both regions, however, sellers report declines, saying they are ‘finished’ in the wild." …

Vegan Contraception
I honestly don’t understand how people can fight against vegans…
You do realize that fighting against vegans means you’re fighting FOR animal cruelty… Right?
Despite community outrage and opposition, the Nevada County Fair Board chose to retain its contract with elephant abusers Have Trunk Will Travel. There is a poll at our local paper and we need your vote to show that the people are not happy about this decision!
Please vote in this poll to show your outrage that the Nevada County Fair Board would even consider keeping this contract with HTWT after viewing the abuse shown in this video!
I know it’s just a poll, but it would really mean a lot to me and other activists in the area if we could show the community that this decision is wrong and we need to stop this cruelty.

They Don’t Kill What They Can’t Sell.
thecosmicredshift:
"I think it’s really silly how people expect veganism to make an impact on the consumption of animal products at all as it’s such a small percentage of the population that even follows that life style." […]
Down at the slaughterhouse, they aren’t running a charity: you’d be amazed at how rapidly the market responds to even a short-term reduction of demand for a particular type of meat… such as happens every time there’s a contaminated meat scandal.
When people smoke fewer cigarettes, companies produce fewer cigarettes; when fewer people smoke, likewise, the same number of plants don’t get grown, nor manufactured into tobacco products.
Before 5% of people decided to quit smoking, 1% of people decided to quit smoking. If you had been part of that first 1%, you might have been regarded as eccentric —in fact, you might have regarded yourself as eccentric, too.
You know how people try to discredit veganism by saying Hitler was a vegetarian? Astoundingly, there was something parallel in the Nazis being anti-tobacco (at a time when Americans and Brits were encouraging their soldiers to smoke). So, yes, there was a time when being anti-tobacco was regarded strangely, also.
Of course, nobody quits smoking to save the lives of the tobacco plants; veganism has an ethical (and ecological) dimension above and beyond smoking. However, I’m merely answering your question here: the bottom line is the bottom line, and that means money. If people don’t buy cigarettes, the same factory will make something else instead; because meat has such a short shelf-life, the industry respond very quickly to changes in demand (increases for holidays, decreases for disease outbreaks, etc.) —so, no, it doesn’t take long for those decisions to have real effects.
Will vegans ever be 5% of the population anywhere? We’ve got to get to 1% first —however, you can visit a country like Taiwan, and see what a difference it makes to have a significant vegan minority around. Veganism is part of the politics and culture of our times; it is part of political and cultural change in our times. The same could have been said of “eccentrics" who heaped scorn on tobacco around 50 years ago, I suppose.
I really wish someone had told me this when I was a kid. Instead, I grew up with the mental image of a magical milk-producing creature whose “potion" was to give me strong and healthy bones.
