HOW TO WRITE BETTER FANFICS
Before I start this *takes in big breath* DONT @ ME WITH COMPLAINTS THAT YOU FEEL OFFENDED! This has been requested by over 20 people, all of which have asked me to post a little lesson on how to make better fanfics. I’m not an export in writing, however it’s a subjective I’ve excelled in. If you don’t like something I say, okay. It’s Amrrrica baby! Also, if you write in any of the styles I put in a negative light, but you like it, then stick with it. You’re doing great sweetie! Moving on!
First things first, don’t stray towards overused plots such as Bad Boy/player falls for innocent boy/girl, or Over obsessive and protective ‘Daddy’ who lives for dominating their ‘Baby’
If you like plots like these that’s fine, just spice it up a bit. Don’t make your story like every other one out there. I’ve come to notice that the fanfics that do the best are the ones that have interesting and underused plots. For example, dystopian plots, zombie apocalypse (it’s become a bit overused though) sci-fi, and even A/B/O plots that don’t take place in a modern day setting. I read fanfic ( mainly Taejon because I’m a slut for it, yum 😋 - if you guys want me to post some fic recommendations let me know. I do both NCT and BTS) and Ive myself really likes plots that take place in medieval times. It’s also preference.
When you actually get to writing your story make sure to plan out everything first. A lot of authors just jump right into writing everything and don’t actually sit down and think it through. They later either end up getting writers block, discontinuing the story (like me 😢) or they turn to their readers for ideas. Now, turning to your readers for ideas isn’t bad. It’s, in fact, saved some stories from turning into a flop. I would say, however, that if you do turn to your readers for inspiration make sure it’s not too often. As the reader it can start to become annoying and it can also come across as though you, the author, really don’t know what you’re doing. This doesn’t apply to authors who are taking requests.
Make sure that your sentences are filled great adjectives and verbs, it will keep your readers engaged. Also, make sure that your sentence doesn’t sound juvenile. By juvenile I mean poor vocabulary and poor sentence structures. Here’s an example of a made up sentence(s) that could use improvement.
“He felt shivers on his spine because of what the other was doing and stood up on shaky legs. Meanwhile the young girl in the same room was going insane and didn’t know what was going on because of the loud sounds she was being exposed to. She was scared and just wanted to go home.”
In stead of “He felt cold shivers on his spine” we could change it to “Cold shivers ran down his spine.” We can also omit the “because” and incert “from what” So we’d have “Cold shivers ran down his spine from what the other was doing.” That already sounds better! However, this new sentence could also use some work. Depending on who this ‘other’ person is, and the role they play within the story (they could be the antagonist, protagonist, etc) you could further complex the sentence by adding a few more verbs and adjectives. Go into detail of who these characters are, their emotions, and the situation.
For example “The overhead lights flickered, red painting the walls in the flashes of light from the luminous color. In the corner he sat; bounded hand and foot to the cold wall behind him. He felt cold shivers run down his spine as the other took a step forward. Then two. Then three, until they were head to head, eye to eye, nose to nose; until they were breathing the same air.” You could then add in “Meanwhile the young girl in same room was going insane and didn’t know what was going on because of the loud sounds she was being exposed to. She was scared and just wanted to go home.” However, change it to something like “Beside him was he young girl with her eyes bounded and her ears plugged. Slim wires ran from each side of her head as music blasted within her skull, rattling her being, deafening her senses. Her body, tattered and beaten, hung low; her head lolling from side to side. Faint whimpers hardly audible to his ears drew from her lips in a pleading melody. “Home...just-want home.” She was scared. Sounds pretty good 👍
One thing I’ve noticed that really pisses readers off is when you add an element to the story that wasn’t in the tags. Keep the story accurate to the tags! I’ve read so many Taekook fanfics where in the tags it will only say ‘taekook’ but like for the first five chapters in the story, or randomly in the plot, vmin are together. Like, no. If you didn’t state it in the tags, don’t add it. People get so annoyed (Trust me hon) if your main couple experiences relationships with other characters add it to the tags. You could say “slight vmin” or “slight namkook” etc. Just let people know. Now, when it comes to character death tags, it could get complicated. Some authors want to keep it a surprise so they say “possible character death” or “plot twist” which is for the most part alright. IF YOUR STORY HAS TRIGGER WARNINGS ADD. IT. TO. THE. TAGS!! Also, if the story has more than one couple, but you specify the MAIN couple, don’t stray away from them unless it’s stated in the tags that both couple are equal to the plot. A lot of taekook fanfics will state that Taetae and kookie are the main couple, but like half way in the book I’ll start reading more about yoonmin then taekook, and I’m like, when? How?? Why??

It was irritating, tiresome, galling. Every moment his breath would quicken, and the room would go spinning, his words cut short and palms sweating strangled him little by little, second by second, bit by bit; pulling him to a place he all but wanted to be, until all he saw saw was him. All he breathed was him. Until everything he wanted to feel was him. So tempting, inviting, alluring...irresistible. Sitting so close, but being so restricted. Standing so close but being so limited. Wanting to touch more than he was allowed, hold more than he was allowed, take more than he was allowed. Fighting the want, the craving, the desire, with blood stained finger tips, upshot from the digging of his nails in his flesh. Why question 'why' was more then known. He knew. Joshua knew exactly why. From every glance,every touch,every call of his name, every whisper that set his being ablazed. It embedded itself into his brain, albeit he knew it was iniquitous, opposite of how he was raised, how he was indoctrinated. Opposite of everything his parents believed in.He knew why. Against his hopes, his wishes, his pleas for false truth. He knew pin point exactly why. Yoon Jeonghan. Two simple words, names, titles, yet they held so much power over him. Imprisoning, detaining, hindering.The many ways he thought about him...looked at him, was like an adrenaline, so much energy, animation ; so much vitality to-"Jisso-ah. Hey, jisoo, are you okay?" So much, for so many ways."Hmm? ah.....yeah....I'm fine"The warm touch, hold, planted on his forehead enhanced the inclination of ardor linked within his veins. The softness of his skin, the gentleness of his caress originated a new rhythm of his heart, blood pumping to every direction of his body."Are you sure?"His cold hands reached up,taking hold of the thin fingers rested on his head out of concern and held them tightly, thumb brushing the smoothness of his flesh briefly before letting go.”Yeah. Don't worry." The older male proceeded on with his singing, vocalizing the foreign words of english the best he could, stammering every so often, groaning at each solecism in ways that emboldened lascivious cogitations. His skin craved for contact, a small graze of shoulders, the rubbing of knees, the meeting of fingers, a glance between eyes.
I’m guessing it does. Do you know why? Your eyes don’t have time to breath! Make space my friend, make space, like this.

Make sure that you give the reader’s a moment to breath by making space between paragraphs and lines. It also gives them a chance to process what you’ve written.
WHEN YOUR WRITING A SCENE OF PEOPLE SCREAMING AT EACH OTHER DONT CAPSLOCK THE WHOLE THING FOR MANY LINES BECAUSE IT HURTS THE EYES AND REALLY GETS ANNOYING!
Don’t add a bunch of exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your writing a scene of people yelling, just type it NORMAL and use maybe two exclamation points.
Some stories will have (I’m not kidding) seven “chapters” of authors notes in a row. Don’t do that. It wastes time. Create one, and if it’s about promising to upd ate soon and you don’t, don’t make another one, only to, again, explain about how things aren’t working out, to create another one to thank people, to create another to tell us you’ll be out of town, to create another about update dates, to create another one about finally being able to update and that the “next chapter will be out soon” to create another one...you get the idea. Create one, and if things don’t work out, when you publish the next chapter add in everything that happened in between at the end of the chapter. I’ve stopped reading stories because the content was more author’s notes than story chapters 😒.
Make sure that you enjoy your story! Readers will enjoy it more of they know that you, the author, enjoy it as well. Some authors will admit that “yeah this ship or group isn’t my favorite. I don’t like writing about them but I’m continueing with the story because I don’t want to give up.” That’s sweet, but don’t do that. You’ll start to loose motivation and your readers will enjoy it less. Also, don’t decide that you all of a sudden, after ten chapters and taekook are FINALLY about to hook up because DANG! It’s about f*cking time those two realize that their secret crush is f*cking each other!, that you want to rewrite the whole entire book because you’re not happy with it. It PISSES off readers. Like, yo I’m being honest. This one author did it and her like 400 plus readers unsubscribed from her.
So yeah, make sure you have fun!
