a s5 byler fic (aka the outline draft i'll never finish)
i had this idea for a s5 byler fic, and since i'm focused on finishing a different byler fic, i won't get to post this before the show ends, so i thought i'd share with you all. the premise is basically how i think s5 would go with byler as the heart of it. hope you enjoy!
The scene begins with a nightmare that Mike is having; at first, it seems inconspicuous, almost like a normal scene/dream, but things quickly take a bad turn. Still, it might not be obvious at first that the nightmare is from Vecna because theyâre all traumatized, so theyâre bound to have nightmares. Maybe this first dream comprises of past events, like Willâs body being pulled from the quarry, him jumping off the cliff, El disappearing with the demogorgon, times Mike felt helpless, and then things that havenât happened (or happened yet) start to flood in, where Mike can do nothing but watch as he fails to save the people around him.Â
Mike doesnât tell anyone because he figures itâs just his mind making shit up, and besides, theyâre going into their final battle probably any day now, and he doesnât want to be sitting on the sidelines like a fucking loser listening to his favorite song on repeat.
Vecna is targeting Mike, but not in the same way as he has with other people in the past; heâs targeting Mike in order to bait Will into doing something, not to open a portal/gate.
Mike and Will are sharing a room/bed; when Mike has the first nightmare, Will either doesnât wake up, or heâs able to convince Will he wasnât having a nightmare.Â
After the second or third time (Iâm thinking the third one will be when they have their argument, but Iâll need to think about what the second dream will be; perhaps the dreams happen in order, beginning with events from season 1, then progressing through Mikeâs fears/insecurities through each season) Will wakes up and heâs frustrated that Mike is clearly hiding something and not telling him.Â
âMike, seriously, whatâs wrong? Youâre hiding something, I can tell.â
Mike probably huffs, annoyed that heâs so easy to read, (or maybe heâs not, maybe itâs just that Will is able to see right through him, able to dissect every ugly, awful thing about him, and yet he doesnât care. Chooses to stay anyway.) âIâm fine, Will, really. Iâm just worried.â
âYou can only use that excuse so many times, you know,â Will says, tapping him on the arm. âCome on, Mike, tell me. In caseâŠyou know,â he adds, turning away. Yeah. Mike knows.
âUgh, itâs nothing, seriously. Itâs justâŠIâve been having these dreams. Or nightmares, I guess I should say.â
Immediately, Will stiffens, rigid with fear. âWhat do you mean?â
âItâs about normal stuff at first, and then something bad happens, like, I donât knowâŠ,â Mike groans, doesnât want him to worry. âIâll see your body being pulled out of the quarry, except this time, itâs for real. And I canât do anything to save you.â
Heâs silent again, head turned to the side, and Mike feels oddly embarrassed, for some reason. âHas your head been hurting at all?â
âWell, maybe a little, butâŠwait,â he says, realizing what heâs asking. âYou donât thinkâŠitâs not him, Will, I swear.â
He sits up, legs crossed as the blankets pool around his legs. âWe donât know that,â he says, and it sounds like heâs getting a little upset. âEl thinks the battle is gonna be any day now. Itâs just too much of a coincidence.â
âIâm fine, seriously. I mean, think of all the shit weâve been through over the years. And all the stuff Owens told you, about trauma.â
âYeah, and look how that turned out,â Will says, and Mike realizes he has a point, but refuses to admit it.Â
âWill, really, you donât need to worry aboutââ he starts, but pauses mid-sentence when Will reaches out and touches a tentative hand to his face. Mike freezes, breathing caught in his throat, until Will swipes his thumb under Mikeâs nose and it pulls away red.Â
The realization of whatâs happening sits between them in a tense, helpless sort of way, neither of them sure where to tread. âMikeâŠâ
âItâs not what you think!â he says, and the words almost surprise him. Deny, deny, deny. âI mean, he hasnât done this in, like, two years, so why would he start again now? Itâs probably just âcause the air is fucking toxic, and thereâs all those spores floating around, andââ
âMike,â Will says, voice flat, indicating that heâs not entertaining Mikeâs delusions anymore. He looks terrified, standing up and letting the blankets fall to the floor. âShit. We need to do something, we need to tell El and the othersââ
âNo,â Mike says, standing up and moving closer to Will in the middle of the room. âDonât. Seriously, I swear Iâm okay. Like you said, the battleâs gonna be any day now, and I donât want to be sitting on the fucking sidelines listening to _______ on repeat.âÂ
Under normal circumstances, Mike thinks Will would laugh and roll his eyes, asking Mike if that was really his favorite song?Â
But this time, he doesnât take the bait. âAre you serious? I know you want to feel needed and all, but you could have died! You could still die, IâŠ,â he glances away, swallows hard. âDo you really expect us to just do nothing and let him get to you?âÂ
âWhat else are we supposed to do?â Mike says, voice rising, too.Â
Will begins pacing around the room. âSomething, I meanâŠcome on, Mike, youâre being an idiot! Canât you see itâs him doing this to you? Heâs probably trying to put you in danger to lure El into a trap!â
âThen why would he use me?â Mike asks, and itâs as heâs staring at Will, eyes wide and looking at him like heâs crazy, that he remembers. Him confessing his undying love for El in a pizza kitchen, Willâs hand burning a hole through his shoulder as the words clawed their way out of his throat. âIt doesnât even matter because if heâs going after me, then heâs going to get me regardless, because we still donât know exactly what the fuck weâre doing. So if he kills me, then I guess he kills me.âÂ
Will is stopped short, doesnât know how to respond. âHow can you say it like that? LikeâŠlike youâre nothing, like it doesnât even matter!â
Will probably storms out of their room to sleep somewhere else for the night, leaving Mike alone.
Other ideas for nightmares (probably at least 2 other ones that precede the Max one: Mike being too late, Mike trying to save people and failing, Mike seemingly making everything worse).
This is either here or something that more explicitly hints at Mikeâs feelings for Will.
Mike is transported back to the pizza kitchen, except when he looks into the dough freezer, it's Max, lying in the same lifeless, broken way she had in her hospital bed.
Except her eyes shoot open and she says something along the lines of âYou lied, I died.â
Maybe she reminds him about the Lois Lane and Clark Kent stuff.
âYou're not even Lois Lane,â âYou couldnât even love her in the right way.â
Mike: âYes, yes, I do!â
Max laughs, cold: âPathetic. You canât even say it without him here.â
Mike thinks him and then Max responds to his thought without him ever saying anything because this is Vecna and heâs in Mikeâs head. âYes, him,â Vecna/Max echoes.Â
When Mike wakes up, he feels even worse than the other times, for whatever reason. He starts to think back to that day and perhaps some of the implications/realizations about what Vecna was implying about Will start to sink in.
Somewhere in here, switch to Willâs POV; he goes to find El. (Not exactly sure where sheâll be yetâassuming that they will all be taking watch in various parts around town and near the portals, but I think that El is not supposed to be on watch, but is anyway because she wants to help and do everything she can.)
Will is probably used to her doing this, as they've probably kept each other company multiple times on each otherâs watches even when they weren't on duty. He gives her the same spiel they always give each other when one of them is up when they shouldn't be, but this time, it's a little more panicked and rushed than usual.Â
âWill, what's wrong? Did something happen?â El asks, standing up from her spot.
âIt's Mike,â Will explains, and it spills out along with the tears dotting the corners of his eyes. âI thinkâŠIâm pretty sure Vecna is targeting him, El. He's been having nightmares, headaches, nosebleedsâŠâ
âBut he hasn'tâŠit's been two years since his last attack. Why now?â El asks, worried and puzzled.
Will hesitates because as dumb as it is, the words take a bitter shape in his mouth. âI think he's trying to lure you to him. By using Mike. You know, since you guysâŠ,â he trails off, not even sure how to define their relationship at this point (or lack thereof) and not really wanting to either.
âBut Mike and IâŠI dumped his ass. A long time ago. It just doesn't make sense,â El says, shaking her head.
Will starts getting frustrated. âWell, that doesn't change the fact that he's got him. And if Vecnaâs been taking this time to get stronger, who knows how much time Mike has? We have to do something.â
Will crosses his arms. âThat's the thing! Heâs just worried that weâre gonna put him on the sidelines. Like it doesn't even matter, like he might notâŠfuck, El,â Will says, head in his hands. âThere has to be something we can do. We can't just put a Band-Aid on this. I mean, look what happened to MaxâŠ,â he says, then bites his lip. âSorry, I know I shouldnâtâŠâ
El puts her hand on his. âWill, I understand,â she says, face full of that steely determination, as if she had been thinking the same thing. Not again. âWe're going to stop him. I will walk right into his trap if that's what it takes.â
âNo,â Will says. âWhat ifâŠwhat if I go instead? I mean, he won't be expecting me, but I still have a connection with him, right? So it should be me, not you.â
El shakes her head. âNo. You can't.â
Will puts his hands on her shoulders. âLook, I know you're used to being the one to sacrifice yourself, butâŠwe need you, El. And this way, we won't be doing what he wants. Maybe we can still catch him off guard.â
Either because someone wakes him, or he wakes up and goes to look for Will, Mike realizes Will's gone.
Will is missing again, but this time, he chose to be.Â
This is where they find him somehow, they think he's dead, but Vecna has him in his mind lair.
And that's when Vecna starts directing all these monsters to try and attack them, Mike throws himself into danger, ready to die because will risked his life to save him and he's gone and he has nothing left to live for.
When Will is in Vecna's lair space Vecna shows him Mike, who is throwing himself in the face of danger with reckless abandon, not caring anymore if he dies because he thinks Will is gone
Will is screaming trying to get out of Vecna's mind lair, but nothing works
Will says to Vecna "You're lying, this isn't real" about Mike fighting all these monsters because he knows about the visions and how he uses them to trap and manipulate his victims
Even though Vecna's plan for Will is different
Maybe he shows Will the vision hoping it will trigger the same level of emotion in him
Vecna tells him "Why would I need to lie when the truth is often so much more painful?"
Will's emotions are so strong that he's able to snap himself out of vecna's lair
He wakes up, lying on the ground, a little out of the way of danger because people thought he was fucking dead, maybe Joyce or Jonathan or whoever is next to him and they're like HE'S ALIVE but he doesn't even notice because he's focused on MIKE
He can see Mike across the field or wherever they're at (cause they're in Hawkins but it's being overrun by the upside down merging there and monsters are running loose, and they're trying to stop Vecna's attacks while El tries to stop Vecna like their usual plans idk)
He can see Mike, trying to fight some of these demo monsters off, recklessly putting himself in harm's way, because if Will's dead then who cares if he dies too?
Will screams across the field "MIKE!!!"
Mike turns around, completely distracted by hearing Will who he thought was dead and the demogorgon monster whatever attacks him while his back is turned, like Joyce and Bob in s2 where he pauses to look at her, and then the claws sink into his face and shoulders
I imagine Will just completely letting out an ear-ringing scream
and time just fucking stops
Which HE DIDN'T REALLY KNOW HE COULD DO BC Vecna didn't really explain WHY he wanted Will, just that he was special, they were both considered different, together we can make the world our own, a place for people like us
But will just doesn't understand, figures he's being considered different in the same ways he always has been
But he can't stop to think about it for too long because he's running to Mike's side, throwing the demogorgon's body off of Mike, and it's just him and Mike that are unfrozen
Mike is on the ground, blood oozing from the cuts in his face and his shoulders and chest
He's on the ground, and will pulls him into his lap
Mike is dazed, both from the loss of blood and the pain and sheer shock that Will is there in front of him
"This is real, right? I'm not being haunted in purgatory or some shit, am I?"
"No, it's really me," Will says, tears streaming down his face
Because Mike thinks he still hasn't escaped the worst
He thinks he's dead AND that he's gone to hell or whatever AND that one of the worst things that could happen is thinking Will is alive but being actually dead
Mike smacks him on the arm weakly because 1. Heâs bleeding and wounded and 2. Cause itâs Mike âWill, I canât believe you just went off on your own like that, IâŠ,â he reaches up, putting a bloodied hand on willâs face, âI thought I lost you againâ
Mike looks around, beginning to notice the way everything has just. Ceased. Spores are caught mid air. The frigid wind of the UD has stopped blowing. They can't hear the shrieks of the monsters or anything. "Will, what happened? Did you...?"
"I don't know," he admits, still crying because he almost lost Mike, and also the cuts don't look great so he's worried he still might. "But don't worry about it, I'm gonna get you out of here, okay?"
Mike confesses somewhere in here. âWill, there's something I need to tell you, in caseâŠâ
Will, crying: âNo, Mike. Don't fucking âin caseâ me right now, youâreâŠyouâre gonna be fine, I promise.â
âWill,â Mike says, and it's like all the tears heâs held back since he was thirteen are shining in his eyes and trailing down his cheeks. âFriends don't lie.â
The tears roll down both their faces as they accept this might be the end; this all started with Will being the one to go missing, and Mike thinking he was going to lose him forever, but Will never thought things would end up in the reverse. Willâs not sure exactly what heâs going to say; heâs only able to get out âMikeâŠ,â before Mikeâs bloodied arm moves from his face to the collar of his shirt, yanking him down and kissing him.Â
Willâs hardly able to even comprehend whatâs happening by the time Mike pulls away, hand moving back to hold Willâs chin and leaving a smear of blood across his upper lip before his eyes flutter closed and his arm falls limp to his side.Â
âMike? Mike!â Will cries out. He glances around, at everyone paused mid-battle, at his friends and family risking their lives, at El, hand outstretched like sheâs about to save them all. Will doesnât know what heâs capable of, but he wonders if, somehow, heâd be able to unfreeze only ElâMike, for whatever reason, wasnât frozen along with everyone else, and maybe it was because heâd been focused on him when he didâŠwhatever he did in the first place.Â
He thinks about El, focuses all his energy toward her, and after a moment, he watches her come back âto life.â It takes her a moment to realize whatâs happened, how everything is frozen except them. And then she sees Mike, bloodied and wounded at his feet, and her expression shifts from extreme confusion to horror, crying as she runs to Will and they grab each other by the shoulders. âWill, youâre okay!â she cries, hands flying to hold his face in her hands, like she canât believe heâs actually there in front of him. âBut whatâs happening, how are you notâŠand MikeâŠ,â she says frantically.Â
âThe demogorgon, itâŠit got him,â Will says, tears continuing to spill down his face and choking his words. âI think this is why he wants me, El. Somehow, IâŠI stopped everything.â His shoulders shake, and he doesnât feel relieved or powerful or anything like that. He feels even more like a freak, like a monster, different. âThis is all my fault. If it werenât for me, he wouldnât haveââ
She grips his shoulder. âNo,â she says firmly. âThat is what he wants you to think. But without you, WillâŠwe would not have a chance. This is why we havenât been able to stop him. You are the key.â
Will snorts through the tears. âI wouldnât give me that much credit, I mean, all I did was freeze everyone. How does that help us? If anything, it just gives Vecna more reasons to come after me and the people I care about.â
Idk how to continue from there so skip to Byler confession
Set from Mikeâs POV; it opens on him walking into the field of flowers that we see at the end of S4. Will is sitting in the flowers, the vibrant colors framing him as if heâs the centerpiece of a beautiful painting. Wordlessly, Mike sits down next to him, and Will doesnât even give him a glance as he says, âI canât believe everythingâs already starting to grow back.â
âYeah, I know. Itâs almost like nothing ever happened,â Mike says, also not looking at Will.Â
âYeah, well, I wish that were true,â Will says. âI justâŠI just hope that this means itâs actually over. For good, this time.â
âSo you havenâtâŠ?â
Will touches the back of his neck, almost self-consciously. âNo, no, I havenât felt him sinceâŠ,â he trails off. âAnd I donât know how to explain it, butâŠI feel different, somehow. That piece of him that was in me, with my now memories, itâs gone. Like, I can still remember, butâŠnot because heâs part of my mind anymore. Itâs just regular memories now, I guess.â
Mike nods, listening. âThatâs great, Will, IâmâŠIâm glad youâre back to normal now.â
Will scoffs. âWell, I wouldnât say normal. I stillâŠ,â he glances down at his hands, as if heâs afraid of them now. His powers. âYou know.â
âYeah. Not normal,â he agrees. âMaybe youâreâŠwell, maybe weâre just destined to be crazy freaks for the rest of our lives.â
âAs long as itâs crazy together, right?â Will asks, half-smile, as if he almost doesnât expect Mike to get the joke. But he remembers. Of course he does.
âYeah,â he smiles, glances away. Clears his throat, feeling the anxiety shoot up in his chest like spikes. âSo, WillâŠabout what happenedâŠâ
The atmosphere around them seems to shift entirely, like all the familiarity and intimacy between them has been sucked from the air. It reminds Mike of Before, when the air was full of poison and spores, and it hurt to breathe for too long. âDonât worry, Mike,â he says, staring straight ahead. âI already know. I was there, and El wasnât, andâŠâ
âWait, what?â Mike asks. Will just looks at him in confusion, as if Mike is the crazy one for the outburst.
âI know that El was the one you wanted to be with. I mean, we thought the world was about to end, and you wanted to spend your last moments with her, but I was the closest thing you had andâŠyeah. I get it, so you donât need to explain. Weâre good.âÂ
Will stands up, ready to walk away from the field and Mike and everything else, and something about the idea of Will leaving in this moment, turning his back to Mike and the field of flowers around them, something about it feels permanent and irreversible.Â
Mike pushes himself off the ground in one quick movement. âYouâre wrong,â he says. It echoes around him, forcing him to deal with the fact that heâd actually said the words out loud.
âYouâre wrong,â Mike says again, more boldly. âEl wasnâtâŠshe wasnât the person I wanted to be with. I mean, fuck, Will, the world was ending, and the only thing I could think to doâŠthe only thing I wanted to do, was kiss you. To kiss my best friend, who I was too stupid to realize I had feelings for all this time. Even when it was right in fucking front of me.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Will asks slowly, disbelieving.
âI know, Will. About the painting, I meanâŠEl didnât commission that from you, did she?â
Will is silent. He shakes his head, tears in his eyes. âNo.â
âThen, if it wasnât El, it must haveâŠit had to have beenâŠright?â He steps closer to Will, putting his hands on his face. Tentative, afraid. âPlease tell me Iâm not losing my mind.â
