This is one of the ways my parents were frequently unlike my friends' parents: unless there was a health or safety concern they did not enter my bedroom without permission. Locking the door for privacy was fine so long as I answered when they knocked to check on me.

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.

Also, if your colors look too flat/muddy when you use a single color layer filter, use a gradient map layer instead and THEN change the mode of the layer. Adjust the gradient map to have slightly different colors for your shadows, mids, and lights until you're happier with it and things aren't as flat/muddy!

This is just a quick and dirty example, but it gets the point across.
