More people need to watch Kiss of the Spider Woman, the musical with Brent Carver and Chira Rivera. I don't think people realize how amazing it is. Lemme give yall who don't know this musical some perspective. Kiss of the Spider Woman takes place in a fascist South American prison. The main characters are Valentine and Molina. Valentine is a Marxist revolutionary who was caught and imprisoned. He is a cellmate with Molina, who is a gay man who was framed for molesting a child and imprisoned for that. For context, he merely had coffee with them, did not know they were a child, and did not touch them in any way. Horrible situation, right? But! Molina has an escape, his actress, Aurora. He's memorized every movie, every scene she's been in. Every single line she's ever said, he knows. Now, at certain moments in the show, it will cut to a scene from one of Aurora's movies that's relevant to the current moment somehow. She is used as a brilliant metaphor for escapism. Now, there is one role she played that Molina didn't like and indeed terrified him. The Spider Woman, a metaphor for death. And every time her motif plays, you can feel death slowly getting closer to the characters in a way that inspires a great dread. The score is brilliant, done by Kander and Ebb, the same people who did the scores for Chicago and Cabaret. The usage of slurs in the musical is horrific in the best way possible, with each one hitting you like a gunshot (to those who have watched the musical you know EXACTLY what scene im referencing). When I first watched this musical I genuinely shook out of dread, the sheer horrific and depressing nature of this musical makes it truly difficult to watch. However, the humor is brilliant, with Molina being a wonderfully flamboyant and sassy personality that never failed to make me laugh. Indeed, the musical's depressing nature only made the humor stronger. ALSO, the dance choreography is incredibly good, being almost hypnotic at times. Im bouncing from point to point like a nuclear powered pogo stick but my essential point is, watch this musical. Trust me on this one
