As members of the LGBTQ community we recognize we have unique healthcare needs and health specific issues.

The current resources to connect the community with allies and LGTBQ-friendly providers are disparate, incomplete, and difficult to navigate. As a result, many LGBTQ patients are faced with enduring inadequate and non-comprehensive healthcare. OutDoc serves as a bridge to connect knowledgeable healthcare providers with the LGBTQ community that is currently under-served and under-resourced with healthcare practitioners that fully understand the challenges of our community.

Slurs are not oppressive because they are offensive, they are oppressive because slurs by nature of being slurs draw upon certain power dynamics to remind their target of his/her/their vulnerability in a certain relation to power and as an extension of that, to threaten violence and exploitation of that vulnerability.

Her story goes mostly how the Disney version went, except she didn’t go to war as a quest for self-discovery or because she felt as though she couldn’t make her parents proud. The sole and only reason she disguised herself as a young man was to take her Father’s place in the war.

So when she told her parents that she wanted to this, they were like wtf no you’re a girl and it’s chaotic out there. And you know what she did? She put on male clothes and challenged her own Father to a duel. Her dad was like ‘who the hell are you’ but accepted. When Mulan won and revealed herself as his daughter, he was like wOAH okay you can go. Basically she made sure to get her parent’s consent before going, so not only are her parents awesome, she was decent enough to not leave them hanging for 12 years.

Yes, she was at war for 12 years, but she not in fact meet a handsome general. Instead she BECAME a general. Eventually the war was won, and the Emperor was so impressed by her he wanted to wed the Princess to her. It was only then that she revealed she was in fact a woman. Then she accepted the rewards and went right back home to her normal life.

There is now even a crater on Venus named after her.

Hughes’ father was beaten nearly to death by the KKK when she was a kid, and what does she do? Become an activist to try and stop that from happening to other people. She raised money to bail civil rights protesters out of jail. She helped women get out of abusive situations by providing shelter for them until they got on their feet. She founded an agency that helped women get to work without having to leave their children alone, because childcare in the 1970s? Not really a thing. In fact, a famous feminist line in the 70s was “every housewife is one man away from welfare.”

Then she teamed up with Steinman to found the Women’s Action Alliance, which created the first battered women’s shelters in history. They attacked women’s rights issues through boots on the ground activism, problem solving, and communication. They stomped over barriers of race and class to meet women where they were: mostly mothers who wanted better for themselves and their children.

These are women are who I always wanted to be.

The following is a rare half male and half female butterfly. The butterfly was determined to be a Lexias pardalis, and its condition is called bilateral gynandromorphy. This is an animated movie about Bilal, an Ethiopian ex-slave who became one of the Prophet Muhammad’s closest companions. Really impressed by the production value and the well-cut trailer. Some nice attention to lighting and composition. One to keep an eye out for.

(Saladin Ahmed, from whom I found this, supposes from his knowledge of Bilal’s story that the movie ends with him meeting Muhammad)
