Now, obviously the synopsis for Sad Teen Hotline is rather clear, but synopses always refer to the first minutes of an episode, to the “opening” that sets up the events for the rest of the segment, so it’s… weird. Does the break up happen in the first minutes of the episode, meaning that whatever happens in the previous segments (Doop-Doop and or Beach Day) makes it nothing more than a formality? Or is the phrasing wonky (wouldn’t be the first time, remember the synopses for Tough Love and A Spell With no Name), and the break up happened before, and Sad Teen Hotline just addresses the direct consequences of it as in Tom going to Earth to talk with Star some time after it happened?
Also, if Tom goes specifically to Earth for the break up, and we know (thanks to the timecode) that he’s going to pop out there from a fire portal early into the episode, does that mean that Star was already at Marco’s?
Was she there just by chance, or she moves to Earth in Doop-Doop? And if she takes such a decision in Doop-Doop as the result of trying to think about what she wants to do now with her life, how could Tomstar still be an actual thing by then? How could she go to live with Marco or on Earth once again, after all the build up from past episodes, and still not solve anything?
And if the break up truly happen in the first part of the episode, it means that something in the previous segments lead up to it in a direct way, so what was it? Is Tom on Beach Day, and he sees Star and Marco and takes the “beach day” picture and he just understands? This would mean that Beach Day has a high enough Starco impact to make Tom realize what he should strive to get what Marco and Star have, and decide to break up with Star for his own good? But Sad Teen is two segments after Beach Day, wouldn’t that break the pace a bit?
I have no answers this time, only questions to help our collective brains churn and think about what could happen. Currently I can envision three main potential scenarios:
BEST CASE Tomstar breaks in Doop, Beach could be important for Starco, in Sad Teen we see “How Tom is feeling now” side of things, the phrasing of the synopsis is just very dumb and didn’t properly convey the idea that the break up is an already established reality and that the episode features the consequences of it on the characters after some days.
AVERAGE (possibly most likely) CASE The break up happens in the first minutes of Sad Teen as a formality following the build up in Doop and/or Beach, which put Tom in a position to be sure about his decision and, hopefully, Star in a position to be ready to understand and accept why this happened
WORST CASE Literally nothing that’s not purely thematic builds up in Doop and Beach, so Sad Teen has to contain all the development to Tomstar ending: both the cause the the actual break up and consequences.
As for the plot side of things, it looks interesting. My theory is that at the end of Sad Teen Hotline Tom sees that he can’t go back to Mewni, and the teens discover that any portal based form of travel doesn’t work (Mina attacked the castle and Hekapoo sealed the dimension? Dunno), so they ask for Janna’s help in Jannanigans and it turns out she had been using the Realm of Magic to travel from Earth to Mewni, and then the other synopses happen. This would mean that the climax of the story would begin with late segment 17A / segment 17B, and lead directly to the finale with a series of interconnected segments.
