SO I BELIEVE that Badeni did have a chance of escaping. I've seen people saying Nowak is just really good at his job, which I'm not going to deny, and Nowak himself says that Badeni had nowhere to hide, but I believe he pretty much gave himself up.
So what do I mean by that?
The thing is, I haven't seen anyone wondering how Badeni’s letter to Grabowski ended up at the church despite Badeni emphasizing that there was no time to write it and he would have to deliver it himself—meaning that is what he did.
Let's assume that even with the time Oczy bought him Badeni's chances of escaping would've been very slim—they were probably still greater than Plan B working out. Badeni is a logical thinker. He makes rational decisions. The only emotional factor to possibly influence him should’ve been his egoistic drive to publish his findings and fulfilling his desire of becoming special and famous.
His chances of trying to escape and achieving his own goals should’ve outweighed writing and delivering the letter.
Nevertheless, he decided to put his faith in Grabowski to preserve Oczy's writings and with it he gave up any chance of escaping.
Badeni knew what he was getting into. He chose certain death.
He was fully aware that, if he wrote and delivered that letter, what awaited him was torture by Nowak—an "endless nightmare" he would endure to save the documents in the stone chest, until he might finally manage to die.
What he didn't take into account was the possibility of Oczy surviving the fight. He doesn't let it show much, but seems to be surprised to see him alive. In the anime you can hear him gasp quietly.
When we meet Badeni for the first time he doesn't care about anyone but himself, nor about anything but his own accomplishments. He's arrogant, egocentric, believes in a God-made classist system and that the thoughts and opinions of peasants do not matter.
Oczy challenges this world view. He's like a riddle Badeni can't solve and that intrigues him so much that he picks up Oczy's book.
Their conversation at the fire and lastly Oczy's conviction to die and even go to hell to protect heliocentrism are what ultimately tip the scale. Oczy's book and the inspiration it holds for a wider audience, the materials in the stone chest and their meaning for history—preserving them seems more important than his own life and treatise.
In the cell right before their execution it’s clear that he doesn’t fully understand that last-minute decision either—he might even be regretting it because it didn’t work out exactly as he had planned. Rafal’s materials had to be burnt after all—something he might be blaming on his own weakness and the mistake of caring about another person.
But after Oczy’s last words at the gallows there's no shred of regret left. He doesn't regret getting close enough to Oczy to start caring about him, doesn't regret writing the letter instead of taking the chance to escape himself, doesn't regret handing over the stone chest to save Oczy’s eyes.
Badeni is satisfied that after all these months Oczy can look up, still see the stars and call the night sky not only somehow, but definitely beautiful. Badeni himself had said there only was one way to achieve that—by making the world move. Therefore, in some way, they have accomplished their dream after all.
Oczy can die with hope intact, knowing his writings are out there, the possibility of them inspiring others is not zero, and Badeni can die at peace, believing he did the right thing and that heaven awaits the both of them.
why is privacy so eroded. I get treated like a nutcase if I say no, I don't want strange companies taking pictures of my home and putting them online for maps or whatever. I don't want to be in the background of your tiktok, and I think it's weirder for you to assume I'm okay with it than it is for me to politely ask you to refilm it so my face isn't in the frame. I don't enjoy handing my employer a list of every online account I have and feeling under surveillance when I'm just shit posting or sharing pictures of my cats or garden harvest. I don't want to hear your private calls on speaker on the bus, esp when the person on the line doesn't know you're broadcasting their words to strangers. I don't want an algorithm guessing what will piss me off the most so I spend more time online, engaging with shit I don't want to see or hear out of outrage. I don't want any of this. it's total ass.
