Okay so this is crazy. The above is clearly not a completed post. That’s because I started writing it, drafted it so I could finish it later, and then accidentally posted it while trying to edit it. After I accidentally pressed the button that said “POST” I refreshed and refreshed my blog waiting for this to pop up so I could delete it or private it or something, but the post never appeared on my blog. I concluded it must have gotten lost (?) somewhere (??) and was gone forever, which was kind of a solution. Anyway that was a month ago. This posted on my blog 46 seconds ago. Literally what happens on the back end of this site

Tumblr weirdness aside: MXTX, by her own admission, plays too fast and loose with historical accuracy to actually try to pin it down. My favorite example is in TGCF - at one point, Xie Lian goes into a store with fitting rooms, which of course were not a thing in any period of ancient China (or most places, really, until off-the-rack clothing became much more common and accessible), and rather than not have the fitting room she just has Xie Lian think "oh wow, this store is so innovative!" And hanging a lampshade like that is about the closest she comes to worrying about historical accuracy.

And then, of course, for SVSSS there's the question of whether Airplane was trying for anything like historical accuracy himself, within MXTX's ahistorical frame. Which I doubt he was.

So. Uhhhhhhh. I've seen attempts to say, for example, that MDZS couldn't have taken place any later than the Song dynasty because of this or that, but then there's always some other detail besides the one that person uses that contradicts whatever era they've settled on. So I just. Wouldn't worry about it. It's the dynasty when demons were crossing over into the mortal plane and fucking humans.

Yes, and for other fiction, it varies (just like European fantasy varies from medieval to steampunk and so on). Many wuxia novels are set in the wilderness southeastern China during the Warring States or Three Kingdoms era but not all. (They are usually not specifically stated to be set there, but the archetype/trope of the climate and culture is based on there.) Most imperial dramas are based loosely on certain dynasties, Ming and Song are the most popular. Any stories with technology or steampunk inspirations are often Ming due to the explosion of innovation and exploration during that time. Xianxia is fully high fantasy so trying to give it a specific time period would be silly, but the popular clan/sect tropes are again primarily inspired by rural lifestyle in the Warring States era.

But there are also xianxia and wuxia set in anywhere from prehistory to modern time, because at heart xiake is just "hero" whose definition is just a certain type of fantasy, not necessarily period drama.

Ever since he was young, Luocha’s day to day life had never been very interesting. Every morning at 6:30 sharp he got up, washed his face and brushed his teeth, dressed, and made his skin and hair presentable. He had done this so many times that ordinarily, rote memory carried him through all of it like clockwork, leaving his mind free to wander.

Beaded Rainbow Odenwald Shawl!

Lost my mind a little and added (if my math is correct) 5,615 beads to Nim Teasdale's Odenwald pattern. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!

The goal was “soothingly weighted but not uncomfortable to wear, even as someone with chronic pain.” It could have been a little heavier, so maybe I’ll make a shawl with larger beads another time, but I’m very pleased with this one. I used size 6/0 seed beads, applied as I go with a .6mm crochet hook.

Yarn-wise, used 2 cakes of YarnArt Flowers. I knitted the fully purple sections from both, then knitted all the way through the yellow-oranges with a single ball. When I hit the beginning of red-oranges, I used yarn from both cakes, alternating between them. (Not the entirety of both, I played it by ear to make sure I made it through the full rainbow.)

I do have edited charts with bead placements. I will only share them with Nim's permission.

I've done A LOT of knitting/crochet this year while chronic illness kept me from my sewing machine, but I'm feeling much better now. There will be new quilts to look forward to soon, plus a few more yarn crafts to share in the meantime!

The weeks flew by. As summer grew closer and closer, the date of Yanqing’s school trip also grew closer. And so one muggy Saturday morning Jing Yuan found himself standing alone in his living room, feeling a little lost. He had just seen Yanqing off at the train station with the rest of his classmates, and now that he was home, everything seemed very empty.
