Whenever they gave us one of those "read through ALL the instructions before you begin!" trick assignments in school where the steps lead you on an increasingly ridiculous goose chase until the final one tells you to just put your name on the paper and turn it in without doing anything else, I was always like, "Okay, but what's the point? Surely the REAL world won't be anything like this." And then I grew up and discovered that not only is the real world often exactly like that, some people won't even read the first line of the instructions even if they make perfect sense. And these people are called "co-workers"

I've worked in customer service for a long time. It's really just people avoid reading at all costs. Doesn't matter if it's a whole paper or a single sentence. And then they get mad at the Ikea instructions for not having words. Would you read them anyway?

It's like the average person is mad we forced literacy onto most of the population.

Those Ikea instruction sheets are bullshit. I can understand the wisdom in wanting to make sure that the directions can be understood just by looking at the images. That only becomes a problem when I'm looking at the images and have no clue what I'm looking at. Give me a bit of text that just spells out what I'm supposed to do, so that I don't have to figure it out via experimentation.

One time I came home from uni very upset and my younger siblings asked what's wrong. I said that mutated flies in our lab escaped because someone broke their jar. This is AI. I tried drawing this because it was cute, but then I started writing out the Chinese and while I'm not super familiar with simplified Mandarin, I knew something was off with the middle character as I've never seen a radical, simplified or not, that has four horizontal lines connect by a verticle line like that. I put hashbrown in google translate and got back 薯饼 and then wrote in the first character which brought back the correct character 脆 which means crisp. I tried looking through wiktionary to see if they were just variants that I wasn't aware of, but found nothing. So then I thought maybe it was the font McDonald's China used, so I googled "Chinese McDonald's Hashbrown" and immediately found the image they used to generate this.
