Squick is a useful word that allows you to say “I don’t enjoy this and am in fact the opposite of enjoying it, but there’s nothing wrong with you enjoying it.”

It’s a good word and the only reason I can think of to want it to not be used is bc it flies in the face of the purity police’s wanting to make all things they personally dislike “problematic” and “gross”.

Squick is also a useful word when you don’t want to misuse/dilute “trigger.”

Example: I am deeply squicked by descriptions of characters eating in a messy fashion that would leave food and grease all over their faces. I don’t have any trauma or phobias associated with it, so it’s not a trigger. And it’s not something that’s widely disapproved of, like, say, murder, so it’s not something you’re likely to tag for. (After all, how many “cute” photos have you seen of Baby’s First Attempt To Use A Spoon?) I just think it’s really gross, and if it pops up a lot or in detail it’s very likely to tank my enjoyment of what I’m reading, so I’d prefer not.

That, dear children, is a squick. I am squicked by messy eaters.

Please bring the word back in 2020. It’s incredibly useful.

I like how, 10 years later, and after huge proven disinformation campaigns, tumblr still hasn’t learned AT ALL to look at a source.

On Feb 23rd, in reaction to news about camps, AOC tweeted this:

In response to this, AOC then received this question from another user, which she answered, and which is being displayed in isolation above:

If you’re not following, AOC went in on how we need to completely revamp our immigration system and fundamentally restructure it away from a carceral state mentality (aka, prison-based).

She was then honest that this is not something that can be done in 2 months, so she called on everyone to keep pushing towards a radical future.

In response to a very specific question about how we should handle children who arrive at the border unattended, while we get this process of revamping the entire system started, AOC’s response was to:

1. Immediately require that only licensed facilities can house children

2. Address the actual question of whether or not these services should be contracted out as they are now (Which AOC just made VERY clear her stance on)

3. Specifically cited the issue of companies who are pushing to reopen (again, her stance on this is clear).

4. Then directly drew attention to a comprehensive framework for legislation which AOC and Rep Jayapal are actively trying to get support for. And the only way we get the support, to drive this kind of radical change, is to underscore that the people have power to make this change, and our activism and support is vital.

STOP LETTING PEOPLE PRESENT INFORMATION OUT OF CONTEXT SO THAT IT IS INCENDIARY AND UNDERMINES THE ACTUAL POLITICAL PUSHES THAT ARE IN YOUR INTEREST AND IN LINE WITH YOUR OWN RADICAL POLITICS.

Those people on the streets are being left to die right now. The people in this video are getting them masks, hand sanitizer, food, and more - the stuff they need to have a better chance to get through this

This entirely. I’ve worked retail, they never held us accountable for losses due to theft, and honestly how could they? Shoplift, help your neighbors, the whole system is set up to hurt all of us anyway so fight it!!

Literally when I was closing for w*l-m*rt electronic section I had, IN ONE NIGHT, 6 PS4 controllers ($60 each), 3 arcade machines ($120 each), and 3 home speaker systems ($500 each) stolen while I was stocking and helping other customers and I never, EVER, was held accountable for that despite being the ONLY person in the department that night. That’s aprox. $2220 stolen in ONE NIGHT, and it affected me in absolutly no way.

Stealing things that you dont need? Wrong.

Stealing from small, local shops? Not only Wrong, but massively a dick move, as this IS the situation where stealing affects employees directly.

Stealing from big-name franchise stores to help yourself or others, ESPECIALLY in times of need? Punk as fuck and totally right, dont let anybody tell you otherwise. They wont notice the shit missing, and even if they do? It wont be significant enough to even *begin* to make a difference to them.

I really really don’t get this Protestant ethic type of response from people who do support shoplifting, where something becomes immoral simply because it’s frivolous or unnecessary. I see it all the time. Like, yeah, shoplifting is a victimless crime, but only do it if you’re poor for some reason? If you steal something simply for enjoyment that’s sinful, only people with disposable income should have PS4′s because poor people don’t deserve anything other than bare minimum paycheck-to-paycheck misery

Fuck that noise. Steal cute clothes. Pirate video games. Sneak into movies. Yes, it is bread we lift for - but we lift for roses, too

some practical advice, because while we are willing to pay a fine or go to jail for whats right, ideally that wont be necessary.

- masks are helpful in preventing the spread of covid. theyre also helpful in making you harder to identify - larger shops are more easy to steal from, you are less likely to be noticed - check. clothes. for. alarms. - buying a decoy object might be a good idea - goes without saying, if u can fit it in ur pocket, it was free anyway - dont go in, grab smthn, then go out, you might as well spend a little longer - ask an employee where something you know they dont have is if ur worried u look suspicious for legal reasons, this is a joke

Okay, I worked at a w*m*rt and I second the person above who said they never got in trouble. I was the fucking manager of electronics and I had people break in on my shift and steal all my iPhones. I wasn’t held accountable, and I was the manager. Tips: 1. If you’re going to do this consistently, take a little at a time. If six cans of formula go missing over a week, they won’t really notice. Clean out the shelf? There will be an HD camera on that aisle. 2. Work in groups or pairs. 3. Only managers or members of asset protection can stop you and accuse you of stealing. Ain’t nobody got time for that, managers–the salaried ones they need to call–are slow as hell. The anti-theft associates will not be wearing store smocks. If you keep seeing the same ‘customer’ or they seem to shop many days in a row w/no cart? That’s the AP associate, baby! Scout. I canot stress this enough. Fucking scout. Learn where the cameras are. Make friends with the workers. AP manager came to me once and said ‘such and such customer was stealing’. My answer? “Oh that’s just —, they hang around, sometimes they buy pens.They weren’t stealing. AP TOOK MY WORD FOR IT. Get rid of packaging. All barcodes must go. They can’t prove you stole it if they can’t scan it. DOn’t dump the barcodes in the fitting room. We have to check those and report stuff. Bathrooms are much better for barcode dumps. Wear hoodies, stuff with pockets, obviously obscure your face. DO NOT HIT THE SAME PLACE MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK. You will be remembered. Not that I endorse stealing from corporations, or anything. ;)

If you’re inexperienced, don’t dilly dally. Make sure your movements are as smooth as possible. If you look around nervously, you might tip people off so act naturally. People don’t normally pay attention to other customers so just act like you’re not doing anything wrong (especially because you’re not).

If you get caught or approached, play dumb. When I worked retail, not even security guards were allowed to make a move, all they could do was make a report. Act outraged, go full karen. Nobody wants a lawsuit on their hands for a wrongful accusation.

Finally, if you’re black or brown, be extra careful since you’ll be under extra suspicion because of racism. In the states, black people have been killed for less so case your joints carefully, though I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that. Fact of the matter is it’s easier for white able bodied people to steal so consider mutual aid, like in this video, for your underprivileged friends and community members.
