petty--dabblerâ:
Left to his own devices, John found a swift exit from all the meaningless chattering going on the gallery and into the cooling evening air. Pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, John lit up with a quick flick of his lighter and settled into partaking in one of his vices he hadnât quite been able to give up fully.Â
Taking his phone out, a small smile came to his lips at the background picture that sprang to life. A quick phone call and John visibly softened when the little voice answered. âHey kid, said Iâd call at bedtime.â He chuckled as a whining no came through the speaker. âYes. Now have you been good?⊠Of course you have. ⊠Yes, weâre being good too. Even Azzie. ⊠I like his suit too. ⊠What was that? Zatanna looked beautiful. Arenât you the little charmer? ⊠Yeah, Iâll tell her.â
John turned his gaze upward, looking toward the starless sky and enjoying the peacefulness that settled over him as his son chattered away over the phone. âOkay, okay. But now itâs time for bed.â John insisted, sending a huff of smoke out into the night. âLove you too, Adam. Sweet dreams. And if the bed bugs bite⊠thatâs right, bite âem back.â
Hanging up the call, John suddenly realised he wasnât alone outside. Turning to his company with a smile as he put his phone away. âNice night out, am I right?â He asked by way of greeting. âLittle crowded in there, though. Never thought I see so many people get so excited over a little box.â
Just as Zari spotted the blonde magician he left to exit the room. The brunette tried to hold up her dress with her hands, as to not trip on it, as she tried to hurry on her high stilettos after John. For the last week or so John had been letting Zari sleep at his apartment with him and his young boy, Adam. Her time there had definitely been very different from the life Zari was used to. It was a nice change, Zari loved kids and this man actually had answers to many of her questions. Not to mention how nice and handsome he was. Zari knew the man was in a loving relationship, it wasnât about that. For the moment, John and Adam was the most safe and stable point in Central City Zari had had since arriving. Also, the whole living situation was much more wholesome, real and comfortable than anything Zari had had in many years. She felt safe and happy with them.Â
As Zari had been quite a bit behind John when he turned to leave and there was quite a crowd, John was already on the phone when Zari got to him. Not wanting to interrupt Zari kept close and tried not to listen in to his phone call. She opened her clutch and took out a mirror to distract her while John spoke on the phone. However it was clear he spoke to his son. The little she overheard of the call made a wide and genuine smile spread over her red lips and she held in a giggle.Â
âSo beautifulâ Zari said, pretending like she wasnât smiling at the adorableness that was this man and his son, but genuinely meaning the words. The brunette turned her gaze to the sky. It was completely clear, not even a small strand of cloud was visible. Turning her gaze back to the blonde, Zari spoke, âWhatâs the deal with this box anyway?â
