△ + what made you join the urs, did you want to?
For once, Zossie opts not to answer right off the bat. Brows furrow in concentration, lips press into a thin line —the child had just come to the conclusion that, wow, she needs to actually ponder over this one… the first half, at least.
The daughter and only child of two decorated Recon veterans, both academy graduates at the top of their class and discharged after more than a decade of invaluable service —was there ever any doubt their beloved Zossie would follow in their footsteps? Did she ever have a say in the matter when everyone expected her accomplishments to match ( hell, even surpass ) those of her parents? The notion is already rendered void by the fact that she always aspired to be like them from the get-go, yet she can’t help but entertain the what-ifs of her early childhood ( back when she was capable of imagining herself as something other than an officer ).
Besides the hopes of the adults around her, what other influences solidified her career choice?
She hazily recalls her first stroll through the city’s shopping district, eyes fixed on a recruitment ad displayed on a skyscraper’s tele-screen, screaming in dazzling blue and white lettering, “The Ultra Recon Squad: Lighting the Path to a Better Future” ; however, it is the accompanying images, as brief as they were, that she ingrained in her memory —images from expeditions of distant worlds most Megalopolitans would never have the privilege of seeing for themselves.
Forests, grasslands, tundras, and oceans teeming with activity. Starry nights and sunny days. Skies of cloudy gray and red and orange, or clear blue and pink and violet. Colorful, lively, ‘ All unknown to our planet, yet what must have once been. ‘
Zossie’s curiosity only blossomed from then on, its rapid growth fostered by her parents’ photos, books, and stories. With every vivid detail, her dream grew more and more certain —yes, there was pressure on her to pursue a career in the URS, but her decision would ultimately be made of her own free will.
❝Mom and Dad, the things they collected from their experiences —I joined ‘cause of them and ‘cause I wanted to, more than anything.❞ A single nod follows, reaffirming her answer. ❝I just had to see what they saw, to feel what they felt, but I was very impatient. I didn’t wanna wait ‘til I was older, so I asked them to let me quit school and sign up right away. Dunno how I made it into the academy at such a young age —❞ ( maybe because her parents had friends in high places ) —❝but no regrets at all! My parents once said that until I came along, their years in the Squad were the best years of their lives, and I’ve found out why! It’s not just the beautiful worlds you get to visit, but also the strong bonds you make with your comrades through your shared goals and experiences!
Like for example, you tend to become fast friends with people after running for your lives from a couple of angry Guzzlords, then brainstorming together to calm them down and get ‘em home!❞
