The Luis Suarez Saga Trilogy
Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz was arguably the talk of the town this week. It all started out in a lesser known competition before moving on to the most watched league in the world, which then ultimately culminated in the final act on the world stage. A very fitting sense of progression in that sense as the main character goes through his life in white, red then blue.
The punishment meted out for this act has divided opinions. Many, egged on by the media, wanted a heavier sentence for a repeat offender, while others (including the victim himself) thought it to be overly harsh. This act of violent misconduct, in my opinion, is a case of recidivism versus consequence versus intention.
This is the third time that it had happened (albeit on different body parts). Logically, a repeat offender deserves a tougher sentence than a first-timer. Since the precedence has been set by various FAs in the past (7 and then 10 matches), it is only fitting that the third time be more than this number. However, were the previous punishments justified? Just because this is an unconventional / childish act of violence, did it get sensationalized more than others?
This brings me to the other factors. In comparison to other violent acts such as head butts, boot to the knee or elbow to the head, is a superficial bite more serious or life threatening than an elbow to the head? Does a bite have a higher chance of ending a player's career than a boot to the knee? One might argue that a bite might cause an open wound when infected. I wouldn't deny that, but that is if the skin was broken. Besides, the studs of a boot causing an incised wound isn't all that uncommon.
The difference between those other violent acts and a bite would be the intent of the person in question. Most of the other behaviours can be reasoned to be accidental, but there is no way a bite can be argued as such.
There was another recent incident involving a goalkeeper and a striker which ultimately resulted in the death of the player who received a boot to the mid section. The consequences were dire in this case, but the aggressor claims that it was unintentional. So, how does the FA or FIFA resolve this?
Take for example another older incident where a player admitted after he retired that he had wanted revenge and intentionally set out to injure another, thus ending the career of the latter. That had serious consequences and was deemed unintentional initially, but after the admission, nothing could be done retroactively.
So, what do I think?
I do not want to think about it. It doesn't change anything. I am just laying out these points to aid objective thinking unclouded by the media and general population. Just note that I am not defending the action, but merely debating the punishments.
The world cup has just reached the knockout stage and I am sure that there will be more on show from the grandest stage of the beautiful game.
Running a Marathon
I have always had respect for those marathon runners. Completing a marathon requires grit, tenacity and mental toughness. I had doubts about my mental strength to finish a full marathon and I wanted to prove myself wrong.
Prior to this, I had paid money to do 16 and 21km. Now, it's 42km. Not wanting to fail myself and my wallet, I had no other choice but to complete it. I had a target of 7hours initially but just fell short of that timing.
The first 14km was good. The crew were enthusiastically cheering the runners on, keeping the morale up. I was able to keep a good pace with the 6hours pacers with balloons. However, after that, I lost pace and lost sight of the balloons. Coupled with the fact that there were no more 100plus from then on, slow just got slower. Conditions got bad to worse as it started to rain along ECP. Cold, soaked, soggy and miserable conditions remind me of the rainy times in the jungle of Singapore. This made me wonder why I paid money to suffer.
Disregarding all these, I was able to run/walk to the turning point. The rain stopped slightly after, but puddles of water in the dark stretches of the route still made it uncomfortable. The jog/walk back towards the end point was more tiring. The pain in my feet had gone but it was my back and neck that was troubling me. I had to walk to catch my breath before resuming the jog. Besides, the lack of 100plus, the gel thing was also out. Halfway out of ECP, hunger struck and 2 bananas managed to keep my stomach quiet for some time. By that time, the crew were all mostly quiet already. Must have been terribly tired and bored standing and sitting around for so long. But at least they got burgers to eat. As we were leaving ECP, there was a group of people BBQing and one of the ladies were kind enough to offer some sweets to "help to keep awake" and cheer us on.
As I exited ECP and entered the brightly lit roads, the light gave me energy to push on again and got back to a run / walk pace until the last 5 km. As the runners crossed the bridge, with the Singapore Flyer in sight, there were still some distance to go. So near that one could see the ending point, yet so far as we have to go around the river. It was demoralizing. I had hoped to finish before sun rise but it came up with 2 km to go. I walked the rest of the way back and ran the last 500m.
After finishing, I still felt alright and thought that I could have done better. The pain only caught up after I collected everything and settled down. It was still bearable and didn't feel much different from after a half marathon probably because I walked most of the way. It was only during breakfast that I felt weak and took a cab back home.
The planning for this event wasn't up to my expectations for the eighty freaking dollars that I had to pay. Insufficient 100 plus, gel. Some dark stretches of gravel road and wet track. I had expected some clock at the turning point as well to know how much longer to go. As more and more people join these races, the prices keep increasing and yet the increasing prices does not deter participants. It is no wonder that many companies like to chop Sinkies.
Regardless, I have completed my first marathon and it is time for me to retire. With that, I also gained a little bit more respect for myself.
Final thoughts, I think that if one can complete a half marathon, he can just easily walk from the 21km point to the end within the cut off timing. Although I respect these marathon runners, I can't help but wonder why they pay this much money to buy suffering (and maybe a sense of achievement).
My Food Logic
I have a logic regarding food. It goes like this.
The relationship between quality and price follows a shape similar to the graph of y = ex-1, where the vertical axis is price and horizontal axis is quality (and of course x & y ≥ 0.
This diagram explains that price increases exponentially with quality. In other words, a $250 Japanese BBQ is not twice as good as a $125 8 course meal. This threshold whereby price outweighs quality varies from person to person. I might have a threshold of $20 whereas a person who enjoys pornography (in food) or a wealthier person (in monetary terms) might have it at $50 or $250.
If I were to add another dimension to it, the 3D graph would probably be more like y = etx-1 where t varies with time. Most of the time, t is not a fixed number, but more likely another function that increases with time. In my observations, this happens most significantly in wedding banquets where the "market rate" is increasing by $5 to $10 each year.
On a side note, I would like to apologize if the "price" that I used to pay was not up to par with what is considered "polite". A wedding, after all, is about sharing the bliss and joy of the couple not at the expense of the guests. If anyone is offended by the diminished joy received from me, please do not invite me for your next one.
There might be many other factors affecting this, such as ambience, brand, companion, etc. Those factors would probably add to the function and be similar to y = etx-1 + α + β + γ. However, those are not the main factor which I consider of significance and I did not want to discuss them in detail at this juncture.
Disagree? It's alright. This is my logic anyway. Who cares about you? (rhetorical)
Happy 2014!

Let's Play 2013 - Tabletop Gaming and Geek Culture Celebration in Singapore Part 2
There was quite a bit going on at Cheng San CC during Let’s Play. Majority of the hall of the event was actually dedicated to miniature gaming and card gaming tournaments.
TableTop Miniatures Gaming / Tournaments
About half the hall was filled with tabletop miniatures gaming. The area that each game requires is huge. But looking at the hordes and hordes of miniature army bashing each other up in miniature dice roll combat is fantastic.
Tournaments that happened:
Warhammer 40k “A Time For Legends” Tournament by Play! Events
Star Wars X-Wing Nationals by Battle Bunker & Gamersaurus Rex
Warhammer Fantasy Battles ETC Team Fromat Tournament by Play! Events
Warmachine / Hordes Steamroller Tournament by Play! Events
Heroclix GMARC (Giant, Monster, Armor, Robot, Colossal) Constructed Tournament
Card Game Tournaments
One of my favorite genre of tabletop games! The creativity of deck building keeps card games interesting and we weren’t short of paper characters duking it out on the tables that day.
Tournaments that happened:
Magic The Gathering (of course!) “Uncut Sheet” Challenge by SGCards
A Game of Thrones LCG “Hand of The King” Joust Open by Gamersaurus Rex
Vanguard Cardfight Tournament by Dueller’s Point
Android Netrunner LCG Tournament by Gamersaurus Rex
The day was awesome fun for all whether cosplaying, card gaming, board gaming or miniature gaming. We’re looking forward to more such events in Singapore!
Let's Play 2013 - Tabletop Gaming and Geek Culture Celebration in Singapore Part 1
It may not be International Tabletop Day but that did not stop a bunch of Singaporean tabletop gaming lovers from converging at Cheng San CC on 7th and 8th September for two full days of tabletop gaming goodness in an event called Let’s Play 2013.
Board Games Buffet by NTU Fast Forward Games Club
We went down to join in the fun on Sunday, 8th Sep and thanks to the board games buffet, we managed to play 3 different games in an afternoon of fun. Check out all the games they brought down ranging from party to strategic!
It was cool that they were pretty liberal with who they lent the games to. Security in the area was low and anyone might have just stolen the games. But we all believe in karma don’t we?
Good karma to NTU FF then, for we had loads of fun playing Ticket to Ride, Munchkin and Settlers of Catan!
Let’s Cosplay! by NEO Tokyo Project
Cosplay at a neighbourhood CC! That’s right! The cosplayers did not use the excuse of being at a neighborhood event to skimp on their efforts. Lots of them still put in a lot of time and work to make sure their costumes are looking their best on stage.
The cosplay event definitely added quite a bit of comic / manga atmosphere to the event. And of course, cosplayers with their colorful costumes are always a feast for the eyes.
We’ll share more pictures for the day tomorrow with some miniatures and card gaming action so stay tuned!
Heroclix miniature superheroes! Featured Collector #5: Alan Nadriz
This week we met up with Heroclix collector Alan, whose collection of Heroclix miniature collectibles is most likely the largest in Singapore! If you are unfamiliar with Heroclix, it is a board game that is unique because it revolves around the use of collectible miniature figures, also known as “Clix". Players form a team using their favourite characters (mainly superheroes from the Marvel and DC Universe but can also include characters from various video games and movies, like Halo and Lord of the Rings) to challenge other players’ teams.
Alan with some of the most precious figures in his Heroclix collection. This is only the icing on a very large cake, really.
Alan showed us the collection that he amassed over about ten years and explained the rules of Heroclix to us (we admit, we were complete noobs at this). We even played a 6-man (technically 5-man 1-lady) Free-For-All format using some of Alan’s Heroclix figures! We were terrible at it but like with most activities, if your friends are terrible too then it can actually turn out to be quite fun. In fact, we all had a great time!
Alan giving us a crash course on the basics of Heroclix.
Red Hulk decided midway that the game was moving too slowly for his liking and decided to take matters into his own hands. Human noobs!
We were surprised to learn that Alan stopped playing Heroclix for about five years due to a lack of player base and community support but decided to make a comeback when he chanced upon a group of active local (Singaporean) Heroclix players. Since then, he has reunited with his childhood love for comic book superheroes and continues to expand his Heroclix collection (estimated to be worth over S$10,000 now).
In an effort to grow the local Heroclix community, he organizes regular tournaments to promote Heroclix in Singapore. Some of the self-sourced tournament prizes he offers are nothing to be scoffed at either! Now that’s dedication folks.
Alan offered rare Fear Itself boosters as prizes for a recent tournament he organised in June this year.
1. What is it about the Heroclix game that you like most?
Besides being able to use the comic book characters, I think I like the strategies as well. You always have to try to outwit the opponents and come up with new strategies to defeat your opponent. I have a penchant for playing funky characters, e.g. the Sinister Six and the Sinister Syndicate. They are not very strong but they have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Also, it can be too obvious if you keep using Superman and Batman. Most of the local players like to use Avengers. The funky stuff might not work all the time but when they do work, people are like “Whaattt?” and I’m like “Yeahh!” (evil maniacal laugh).
Spider-Man and the Sinister Six. You are not seeing things - there are three Mysterios here! He retains his powers of illusion even in Heroclix.
2. Do you have a favourite series or figure from your Heroclix collection?
I have to say it’s Batman. I read and collect lots of Batman comics, and he has always been my favourite character. So I have quite a few Batman clix. The most recent is the Batman series where they introduced quite a number of mechanics and vehicles to the game.
My favourite figure is the Gargoyle Batman (#099 from Arkham Asylum), which has a very nice sculpt. I acquired it through Ebay a long time ago. It is quite hard to get because it’s a chase (i.e. extremely rare). The price I got it at was still reasonable as it belonged to a relatively new set. Now it can go for over $100(!).
Gargoyle Batman (a.k.a. Lamppost Batman) - Alan’s personal favourite figure, and probably our favourite too.
3. Do you regret spending so much on your collection?
No, I don’t. I think most of the collectors will agree with me. They don’t regret when it comes to their hobbies. The regret is when you can’t get the figures you want, not about how much money you have spent on your collection. The urge of completing my collection is more important than worrying about the money. One day when I can finally have my own place, I plan to display my entire Heroclix collection in display cupboards. Then again, if I want to display everything I will have to have a very big house! That’s what I hope to accomplish eventually.
4. Is it easy for a beginner to start playing and collecting Heroclix?
For a beginner player, you don’t need to spend that much in order to play unless you are a hardcore collector and you want to chase every single figure. Gameplay wise, it is fun. Since everybody knows who is Batman, who is Iron man from the movies so it’s very easy for people to pick up the game. Moreover, if you read comics, I don’t think there would be any hindrances or obstacles in playing the game. So if there are any hobbyists or collectors who are interested in Heroclix, they can contact me and I will introduce to them the game.
Counter-top displays and starter sets like these are a good option for new players looking to build their own Heroclix army.
5. Do you think Collectibly can be useful for Heroclix collectors?
I think it would be useful because firstly, they can categorize or keep a catalogue of their figures. Secondly, if they can view each other’s catalogues, it would be easier for them to trade. And I guess more people will know about the game and would want to play the game if they see our collections or like certain sculpts.
Alan’s prized Fear Itself collection. This unique set cannot be bought at retail stores; it can only be won through tournaments.
Alan’s Giant Sized X-Men set was the most challenging for him to attain because it had sold out during his 5-year hiatus from Heroclix. Watch a collector’s unboxing of this set on Youtube here.
Chase figures from the Teen Titans set including the highly sought-after Superboy Prime (third from right)!
White Lantern Chase figures from the DC 75th Anniversary set.
We could not help but be awe-inspired by the intricate sculpts even on miniatures this tiny.
If you would like to know more about the Heroclix community in Singapore, join their Facebook group that is managed by Alan and his friends. The players play regularly every Saturday and hold regular tournaments. They welcome newcomers and are constantly trying to grow the local Heroclix player base.

Man of Steel Collectibles
We’ve been psyching ourselves up all of last week for the opening of Man of Steel, which sent us scrambling to theatres worldwide. For toy collectors it’s that time of the year again where we scour the internet for Man of Steel collectibles. Big guns Hot Toys and Sideshow have recently unveiled their range of Man of Steel collectibles (yay!). The bad news is that they are estimated to be available only in the first quarter of 2014.
Hot Toys
Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series 1/6th Scale Superman Action Figure. Available for pre-order at US$199.99.
Sideshow Collectibles
Sideshow Premium Format 1/4th Scale Statue. Available for pre-order at US$379.99.
Mattel
Next, here’s the range of collectibles from Mattel’s Movie Masters series.
Mattel’s impression of Superman looks pretty good and detailed for its price (US$21.99 - US$28.99 on ToyWiz). Check out all the Man of Steel toys that are available in the Movie Masters series here. See a video review of the Superman figurine by Youtuber Sean Long below.
And here’s Jor-El from the same Movie Masters series. Evidently he bears a decent resemblance to Russell Crowe.
General Zod in his battle Kryptonian armour was released in Wave 2 of Mattel’s Movie Masters series. We think that he looks pretty badass and you’ll likely feel the same. There is also another version of Zod without his armour, and a third version of him in shackles.
Zod’s emotionless lieutenant, Faora, is also included in this series. Trust me, she’s one tough Kryptonian and is capable of kicking some serious butt.
If you’re still unsatisfied, here’s a video overview of all the action figures from Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the Man of Steel Movie Masters series!
DC Collectibles
Meanwhile, here’s a preview to the DC Collectibles Man of Steel 1/6th scale statues seen earlier this year at Wondercon 2013. View DC Collectibles’ Man of Steel line-up in the Collectibly database here.
Jor-El certainly looks menacing in his golden suit of armour.
Seen together here are Jor-El and his son Kal-el, better known as the caped superhero Superman.
A close-up of the Man of Steel.
The detailing of the features on the statue by DC Collectibles is immaculate, as seen from the close resemblance to Henry Cavill.
Each 1/6th scale statue retails at US$130 from DC Entertainment. Interested to know more? Read IGN’s detailed review of DC Collectibles’ Man of Steel statues here.

Superman Video Games Through the Ages (Part 3/3)
Today we’ll wrap up with the third and final post in our series looking at past Superman video games. Be sure to check out Part 1 and Part 2 if you haven’t seen them!
The titles that we will cover today were games that feature Superman in them but do not star him as the central figure of the game. They were also not based on any Superman movie or comic series. Interestingly, reviews for these games were generally more positive than those that starred the man of steel.
14. Justice League Heroes (2006) Developer: Snowblind Studios. Platform: Xbox, PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS
A decent action RPG hack-and-slash dungeon crawler for its time, JLH allowed for co-op play with another human player. One of the cool features about the game was the degree of character customisation offered to players. Players could unlock special powers and increase various stats for their heroes. Coupled with a well-detailed gaming environment, Snowblind Studios proved that they are reasonably capable when it comes to producing dungeon crawlers. The game received a 7.6 on Gamespot Asia.
15. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe (2008) Developer: Midway Games. Platform: PS3, Xbox 360
This violent mash-up of DC Universe heroes/villains with Mortal Kombat warriors generally yielded positive reviews from critics and gamers alike. The 3D battleground makes for a more immersive bone-crushing fighting experience, not to mention the myriad of new tactics that open up because of the larger fighting arena. Gamers appreciated how Midway did not botch the DC license and were impressed by how seamlessly the DC characters were integrated into this new fighting genre, complete with accurate back stories too! The game scored a 7.5 on Gamespot Asia. IGN reviews the game here:
16. DC Universe Online (2011) Developer: Sony Online Entertainment. Platform: PS3, PS4, PC
DC Universe Online originally received a lacklustre response from gamers but that changed ever since the game went from being subsciption-based to completely free on 1 November 2011. It is a classic MMORPG with various DC characters that features very easy role-playing progression for all the hopeless gaming noobs out there. Seasoned gamers were more likely to get bored in the midst of the typical endgame grind, but that might change now as DCUO seems to be adding extra DLC content on a regular basis to keep things interesting. Unfortunately though, the extra content does not come free. The game scored 7.0 on Gamespot Asia. Walk through the hero customization process and some gameplay with Street Ryder:
17. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (2012) Developer: Traveller’s Tales. Platform: PC, Mac, PS3, PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Wii U
We bet some of you didn’t know that Lego had video games as well! Playable characters include Superman among other DC Superheroes. Granted, the Lego figures do not look as cool as their CGI animated counterparts in games like Batman’s Arkham City, but the open-world concept in this action-adventure game allowed players to explore the vast Gotham City while collecting studs and unlocking secrets, unlike previous Lego games which felt somewhat limited.
For the devoted Lego nerds out there, this is likely to bring back fond memories of the good ol’ Lego Island video game series. IGN gave this game an 8.5 out of 10, and here’s their accompanying video review:
18. Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013) Developer: NetherRealm Studios. Platform: PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360
For Injustice, NetherRealms presents an intriguing premise for the game’s storyline: Superman is driven insane by the death of Lois Lane and loses faith in humanity. He chucks out his goody-two-shoes image (finally we get to see some bad boy action) in favour of becoming a ruthless dictator over his vastly inferior and pesky human subjects. It’s certainly hard to imagine our righteous man of steel one day descending down the dark path of villainy. The late Ben Parker ought to teach Supes a thing or two about power and responsibility.
Anyway, this fighting game was made by the same guys who made Mortal Kombat, so you can expect immersive and violent gameplay with a similar style. What made this game stand out from the heap of fighting games is how it skillfully managed to weave an interesting storyline into an otherwise mind-numbing genre. Injustice went down well with gamers and scored an 8.2 out of 10 in IGN’s review. Watch the gameplay video below:
So there you have it. Have you tried out any of these games yourself?
