there was this "best written mobile game" poll on twitter recently and while the results are obviously just a matter of present-day popularity rather than actual literary merit so idc about the outcome, it really cannot be overstated how much every single one of those games owe their inclusion in such a poll to fate/grand order. a poll like this wouldn't even exist without fate/grand order. fate/grand order is the reason mobile games developed confidence as a storytelling medium in the first place. I personally wouldn't even vote fate/grand order as the best written mobile game anymore because I think it overstayed its welcome but it cannot be overstated how much fate/grand order's success shaped the mobile game market into one where the game's writing is being considered at all.

really important context to degenbrecher is that these medals aren't official accolades they're all handmade by her neighbours and friends as thanks for being such a cool and awesome friend and she wears them mostly because if she doesn't wear the friendship pins silverash will be nervously fidgeting all day because he thinks she's mad at him

Bonus multiplier: Degenbrecher thus puts more importance into wearing friendship pins and keeping her funny fidgety employer’s morale up than she ever did upkeeping any sort of cordiality or noblesse oblige as the Kazimierz bloodsport arena champion that brought her immense influence and riches, to the point that she went to the one photoshoot when she won the first time and then they had to reuse that material for basically every media appearance going forward which in turn started a rumor that she was eerily unaging when she was just uninterested, but Neighbor Trishä’s Happy Gold Star (0.01 LMD at the general store) for putting on a puppet show for her four children when she had to leave them in her care to attend to a relative’s medical emergency? That shit goes right on her chest with no small amount of pride and obligation.

You can literally read her event right now. It’s something you can do. Fact checking has never been easier. Her Files are right there. Her event opens with her covered in blood, and immediately boarding the train where the other characters of the story are by jumping onto its roof while it’s moving, whom she chases terminator style. It turns out in the end she was covered in blood because she was helping a neighbor with the birth of a farm animal unprompted, which left her uniform caked in blood from the birth, and she boarded the train because she was running late somewhere and just so happened to spot some suspicious people in it. It’s explained that Degen just helping out neighbors and being super beloved by them is a daily ocurrence. Her Files touch on this plenty as well.

While chasing these people, she overhears some tourists pondering where to go. She stops, gives tourism recommendations, then continues chasing and instantly catches up. She’s got Bugs Bunny powers.

Hell you can read the SilverAsh one shot right now instead of wondering if this is made up and learn that SA and Gnosis blew up all their money to hire her as bodyguard for one (1) night for appearances sake and to look more important than they were, and Degen had so much fun with the menfailures + she liked SA’s ideals that she basically pledged herself to the cause, which THEN takes her to living in Kjerag and actually loving it and considering it, not Leithanen or Kazimierz, as her home, this last bit comes from her Files.

her module story literally tells you that most of her medals were custom made by the people of kjerag to thank her for being so cool and awesome and they literally won't stop giving her medals because she's so beloved

and that silverash made her a special karlan trade medal that was supposed to show that she was acting on official business but soon enough became basically just a friendship pin and one time she forgot to wear it and silverash needed the whole day to work up the courage to ask if she's mad at him

and then he made her another karlan friendship pin

this is all information that is readily available in game or on your story reader of choice

After all this time, it still trips me up how Arknights will randomly have these exquisite NPC portraits—free from the "anime hot" constraints on PCs, with carefully-shaded faces and still clearly showing their own style.

The detail in the face. The texture on the beard, the clothes, the hands. The green accents on the skin and the orange inner-lighting on the clothes. The general fact that a design dominated by grey and white still feels so colourful. All on a character that's an NPC. All in a style only "allowed" because he's an NPC.

And then there's this guy.

Him, he's certainly built different. Wrong, even.
