Vibranium. Itâs stronger than steel and a third of the weight. Itâs completely vibration absorbent. â How come itâs not a standard issue? â Thatâs the rarest metal on earth. What youâre holding there? Thatâs all weâve got. â You quite finished, Mr. Stark? Iâm sure the Captain has some unfinished business.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER 2011 âș DIR. JOE JOHNSTON
I⊠have an unpopular opinion.
This was a kinda shitty thing to do and not funny at all. She gets mad because a guy, who doesnât even know she likes him, kisses another girl (actually she kissed him and he floundered)? And her response? Is to shoot at him??
Iâm sorry, why tf is a woman trying to harm a man when sheâs jealous considered powerful and sexy? That is petty and abusive.
Men shouldnât be permitted violence when theyâre angry, women shouldnât be permitted violence when theyâre jealous. Period.
Sorry, this is a broader issue I have with menâs depiction of âpowerfulâ women in media, but this scene encapsulates it.
I canât stand this scene because it violates the cardinal rule of gun safety: Donât point a gun at someone unless youâre willing to shoot them, and donât shoot someone unless youâre willing to kill them. Peggy as a military woman should know that. Almost ten years later and Iâm still not down with this scene.
As much as I love Peggy CarterâŠI donât love her in this scene. What she does is awful. In a jealous snit, she picks up a loaded weapon and shoots at point blank range at Steve in an enclosed lab with Steve, Howard and lab techs close by. She knew the shield was going to work? No ricochets?? Howard has many prototypesâŠshe knew how well they all worked??? Thereâs no way. Itâs a completely irresponsible overreaction to seeing Steve being kissed by Pvt. Lorraine. Mind you, they were not dating or had any expectations yet. My assumption is itâs supposed to show how tough and no nonsense and takes no shit Peggy is. When actually it shows a great deal of immaturity, insecurity and recklessness and not in a good way.
If you think itâs okay for Peggy to shoot at Steve over an imagined slight, turn it around and have it be Steve shooting at Peggy while sheâs holding a shield because Steve assumes she and Howard are âfondueâ palsâŠ.it wouldnât be ok at all and weâd want Peggy to run far, far away.
Itâs a detriment to her character to be written like thisâŠ.at least to me.
All of the above.
I am so glad Iâm not the only one who hates this scene. This to me reads as Hollywoodâs inability to write strong women.
This scene is dumb and Iâve hated it for 9 years
I 100% agree with all of the above. Her physical abuses may as well have set feminism back about 50yrs (hers or ours)
Also, the stylistic approach to the era is great, except for me... I spent the whole time cringing at the non-period-accurate things (tho thats just me and my weird historical knowledge, it was increasingly distracting)
But worse, I hate that no one bothered to go back for Bucky's body, and the fact that Rogers has a rank that was not earned, it was his enternainment name... its basically his stripper name if you will... he had one bootcamp session and some drugs and was sent off to recite lines whike Bucky was in the trenches. Could you imagine a stripper nurse administering meds and/or emergency care after one cpr class just bc she was told her stripper name was "Nurse" no. No you cannot.
Also that one time Rogers outs his sniper (Bucky) mid battle by fucking saluting to him. He may as well point at the sniper nest and scream really loudly, in German "my best shooter is over there, hope you dont mind him shooting at your guys. Hes got a great ass/thighs combo too!"
