i keep thinking about gengar lately and realize that i just never liked this thing while i should be loving it because i do love creepy + cute. both of my faves are creepy cute, the type of ghosts who do little dances and are happy all the time but can also steal your soul with no remorse. gengar is very similar to this, a little prankster that is well animated who will steal your soul. i like a shitty gremlin but i just dont like it as much as other ghost types for some reason…
i can say oversaturation is one reason but if i like the pokemon enough i can stand it. like i will always eat up eevee(lution) merch which just became the second mascot atp, hell even mimikyu is fine but i just don’t get why we get so much gengar in spooky stuff. babes its not 1998 anymore other ghosts exist!! one ghost type merch line without gengar please, fuck put haunter even the pre-evos are so underrepresented nowadays. NOW that’s an og ghost design.
maybe it’s because people have used it in game since that’s how people get attached to starter- wait it’s a trade evo? lmao? okay i normally hate those but maybe in post game i can shiny hunt one and ask my friend to evolve it to a cool shiny gen- wait the shiny is ass and only gets (really) good temporarily? babygirl you could just have blue eyes and i’d be fine </3
i’d love to pinpoint why i don’t like it since a fat cat looking ghost with a shit eating grin seems to be my vibe. even before i got my “whimsical classic ghost type who would be terrifying irl” that i connect to eventually.
there’s this term i coined in my friendgroup i call “the charizard effect” and it can apply to anything and everything, but it was born from me explaining my feelings about the pokemon charizard. the term is basically about how overexposure to something be it by corporate shilling or fandom prominence drives me away from really enjoying something bc i’m exposed to it so much against my will i become tired of it. it came to me bc i was ranting about how tpci does not, and cannot stop reinventing charizard, and how it is popular and obtusely included in almost every region, merch, etc in every way possible and it’s highly commodified.
i dont dislike the pokemon charizard, in fact i really like its X form, but i am exposed to so much charizard in my pokemon consumption that i cant be bothered to care for it in any more than in passing. this applies to a bunch of other stuff i’d otherwise be ok with, but i always just call this aversion phenomena “the charizard effect”

general
they're rumored to be will-o-wisp like ghosts adapted to look like light fixtures to pull attention of humans. this worked well at one point, they actually could disguise themselves as such with ghost power or the humans just took them in as a cooler candle/lamp/chandelier because of their purple flames.
however since people and pokemon started dying due to their demand of life force, they became feared, hated and shunned away. also the switch to electricity did not help them. this caused the line to be more aggressive and start working together as a group if possible.
their favorite habitats are dark closed off spaces like abandoned buildings, dense forests and rarely caves due to one reason, they hate water and rain. it hurts their precious flames and water just feels gross to them. bathing absolutely not reccommended, you should clean them like you're dusting off a lamp.
they can come in different colors. different flames, body colors, glass colors etc. but their eyes will have a single yellowish tone unless they're shiny or heterochromatic (or just mega lol).
they're oddly nice to fellow members of their line, if they're not being a jerk others will welcome, play and share with them. they're good parents for a ghost type but even if they're not related, the evolved ones will give a hand to their weaker members occasionally.
people have tried to create different breeds of these that resemble different architects of light textures but the focus shifted on well behaving ones that will be easier on new trainers who want this line but scared of wild ones for valid reasons.

litwick
this stage uses the power of friendship best due to how slow and weak they are. usually one will be sent out as a bait while others will start appearing to drain the victim's life force and gaslight them into thinking the first one can be trusted.
they know they're cute. if they notice the victim finds litwick cute, they'll act playful. this might not always work in case they know litwick can be deceptively cute but it will not hurt for trying it.
they don't leave their territory much due to how slow they are but if it's gotten too dangerous they can migrate. they'd rather not since it tires them.
despite their tendency to manipulate, they're still very open to learn and experience things so they're the easiest to catch and raise of this line. they're not reccommended for new trainers but some adore the line so much they go for it anyway. as long as they're trained well, they can be trusted with a loyal companion with temper like most fire types. they can even be taught to drain life force from more desireable things such as live prey or taking small sips instead of the whole thing.
lampent
when a litwick evolves, they'll be joyous as they get more durable armour for their flame and capability to float. they often go more independent and start hunting on their own. they'll still be kind to their line though.
some will stay with their group with a "i'm stronger now, my help won't go to waste" mindset. litwicks appreciate this since now there's someone that can carry them around and be extra firepower if things go dire.
the entire line can feel when someone is dying. it's just that litwick is too slow and chandelure is too impatient for such so lampent got the reputation. to it, dying things are easy snacks yum.
lampent is the most tolerant to water since their flame is sealed off but they still don't like it. water might leak to the danger zone so they wanna be safe.
most hospitals and nursing homes keep water types if lampent is around to shoo them away and let the spirit pass to afterlife instead of being lamp fuel. water types are prefered because of their demeanor but anything that's strong against them works.
chandelure
this species took a while to be discovered, people even assuming it doesn't go further from lampent due to their stone evolution. because of this most of the population has a trainer and most have been raised as a litwick. they're fiercely loyal and some can be overly protective if not raised right.
it's told that the first one belonged to a duchess that fancied dusk stone jewelry, he managed to get his arms on that one night and caused quite the ruckus since no one expected him to be this strong.
wild ones are rare but they're seen as threats and those around one's territory are told to leave it alone since it'll want the soul energy before anything else. the responsibility of taking care of 5 flames, one being particularly big, its past experiences as having to struggle for their prey and the huge power boost makes them not merciful.
the newly found hypnosis is the most cost effective way to keep prey calm but they can attack or corner those if necessary. it's not as good as a malamar's but some can get close with enough practice. it's because of this, the trained ones are worse at it. if one falls for it, they're far gone.
since they're rare in wild and their tendency to hunt alone since they don't need help anymore, the pre-evolved forms find one as a company a huge opportunity.

You know what??? I think Pokémon really went off with the category of designs that's just "looking like a human woman in a dress". I know people are horny for some of these designs but I must stress I care a 0 amount about that. It's not my motivation, nor does knowing about it ruin these designs for me. I just like them. Just look at these.
