My favorite thing about Thomas the Tank Engine is that it canonically takes place in a train post-apocalypse where the Island of Sodor is the only safe zone in a totalitarian dystopia in which steam trains are routinely killed and their body parts are sold or cannibalized for repair
If you think I’m kidding you need to read the original books
could you please direct me to a source? i would feel much better if this was validated.
It took me so long to find this quote online but I did it because it’s so much darker than one might expect from Thomas the Tank Engine:
“…Engines on the Other Railway aren’t safe now. Their controllers are cruel. They don’t like engines any more. They put them on cold damp sidings, and then,” Percy nearly sobbed, “they…they c-c-cut them up.” -”The Bluebells of England.” Stepney the Bluebell Engine. Rev. Awdry, Wilbert. London: Egmont Publishing, 1963.
This illustration, by Gunvor and Peter Edwards, accompanied the above text in the original book, and depicts a pair of unfortunate Other Railway engines moments before being disassembled with a blowtorch.
HOLY FUCK LOOK AT THE ONE IN THE BACKGROUND THEY TOOK ITS FUCKING FACE OMG
the early thomas the tank engine books are pretty standard stuff. saccharine bubblegum type stories and illustrations. if you watched the show, it’s like that in book form. the second half of the railway series are so fucking dark and surreal i’m convinced they were a result of reverend wilbur awdry doing copious amounts of lsd and having hallucinations of his own death.
Excuse me but the very first story in the Railway Series is about an engine who hides in a tunnel and refuses to run because he doesn’t want to get his paint job ruined in the rain, so railway management seals off the tunnel.
They eventually let him out because another engine breaks down or something, but the original plan was to just leave him in there forever.
On the show, didn’t they also hook up one engine to a generator, so he’d never move again? That was literally one of the lines, I think. It’s on some other post on here. It was chilling.
Yes! This also happened in the books, to an engine referred to only as “No. 2″, but the television series applied the same scenario to an invented character named “Smudger”, in the episode “Granpuff”.
“Smudger,” said Duke. “Was a show-off. He rode roughly and often came off the rails. I warned him to be careful, but he took no notice.” “Listen, Dukie” he snared. “Who worries about a few spills?” “We do here! I said, but Smudger just laughed.” “Hahaha!” “Until one day, Manager said he was going to make him useful at last. Smudger stopped laughing then!” “W-w-why? What did he do?!” “He turned him into a generator. He’s still there behind our shed. He’ll never move again.”
This is so fucked up
No, listen.
Okay, so we see Railway Management doing all this shit, right, but supposedly it’s so much worse in the Other Railways? I mean, sure, you might get turned into a generator or bricked into a tunnel for not doing as you’re told, but at least you’re not cut up and sold for parts, right? It’s not so bad on the island of Sodor, right?
Or maybe that’s just what Railway Management wants the engines to think.
Maybe the island of Sodor is the real totalitarian regime, and the engine citizens (slaves) are fed propaganda, illustrated in hellish grays and sulfuric yellows, about how bad it is everywhere else, at all the Other Railways.
You are lucky to be an engine of Sodor.
Railway Management cares about you.
Trust Railway Management.
Stay on Your Track.
It Could Be So Much Worse.

“Weep, you girls. My penis has given you up. Now it penetrates men’s behinds. Goodbye, wondrous femininity!“
“Amplicatus, I know that Icarus is buggering you. Salvius wrote this.“
“We two dear men, friends forever, were here. If you want to know our names, they are Gaius and Aulus.“
“Floronius, privileged soldier of the 7th legion, was here. The women did not know of his presence. Only six women came to know, too few for such a stallion.“
“On April 19th, I made bread.“
“ I have buggered men.“
“If anyone does not believe in Venus, they should gaze at my girlfriend.“
“It took 640 paces to walk back and forth between here and there ten times.“
“Chie, I hope your hemorrhoids rub together so much that they hurt worse than when they every have before!“
“Epaphra is not good at ball games.”
“Two friends were here. While they were, they had bad service in every way from a guy named Epaphroditus. They threw him out and spent 105 and half sestertii most agreeably on whores.“
“Secundus likes to screw boys.“

Just a reminder that the first NASA astronauts were supposed to be women because generally they are smaller, lighter (less weight in the cockpit means less fuel required) and eat less than men and so would be easier to accommodate in space.
Both men and women trained (and many of the female finalists had higher scores than the men), but they were completely excluded from the final selection because of their gender.
13 women underwent final training, all were accomplished pilots with at least 1000 hours flying experience, all passed the necessary tests, all could have been astronauts if only they were afforded the opportunity.
[below, Jerrie Cobb photographed during testing]
They are collectively known as the Mercury 13, there’s a great blog entry about them here and a brilliant PBS documentary too.
Their names are Myrtle Cagle, Jerrie Cobb, Janet Dietrich, Marion Dietrich, Wally Funk, Sarah Gorelick, Jane “Janey” Hart, Jean Hixson, Rhea Hurrle, Gene Nora Stumbough, Irene Leverton, Jerri Sloan and Bernice Steadman. They should be remembered and celebrated for their role in the history of space exploration.
It wasn’t until 2 decades later that Sally Ride became the first woman in space in 1983.
7 of the surviving members of the Mercury 13 are pictured below, 33 years later in 1995.
“Right Stuff, Wrong Sex: America’s First Women in Space Program” by Margaret A. Weitekamp is a really great book about the Mercury 13 if anyone wants to read about them too.

Netflix LGBT Movies
So a while back I went on a binge of LGBT movies and made a list of ones that I found on Netflix. Hope this helps because I know I had a hard time finding them.
Boy Meets Girl My rating: 5/5 Summary: a transgirl has a fling with another girl all while her best friend realizes he might be in love with her. Set in Kentucky
I absolutely loved it! It was funny, heartfelt, heart wrenching and cute. Plus I’m from the south so it was kind of homey and familiar. Charming. Warnings for full body nudity (like 1 second)
GBF My rating: 3.8/5 Summary: Tanner gets caught up in his best friends scheme to be popular and ends up outed with three popular girls after his friendship.
I saw this one get a lot of shit on tumblr but personally, I loved it. It was hilarious and satirical. B-list actors are familiar faces so that’s kinda nice. I thoroughly enjoyed (and still do its one of my faves) this movie.
RENT My rating: 5/5 It’s RENT. Do I have to say anymore?
4th Man Out My rating: 4/5 Summary: a mechanic comes out to his three very straight friends. He deals with finally being out and they adjust to make him comfortable
This one is a sort of “masculine” comedy I guess? Idk but it worked and it definitely wasn’t too serious and had some ridiculously funny scenes.
Jenny’s Wedding My rating: 3.8/5 Summary: Jenny is getting married to her girlfriend and must come out to her family.
I think this one isn’t so much about the couple, but about the protagonist’s struggles in coming out to her family. Not really a romcom, but more like a drama I guess?? Idk what genre this falls into but some moments really got me.
The Way He Looks My rating: 5/5 Summary: A blind boy’s life is filled with adventure by the arrival of a new student named Gabriel. Gabriel also manages to turn Leo’s best friend’s (Giovanna) world upside-down.
LISTEN HERE CUMSLUTS THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES EVER OK! It’s in Portuguese I think? But it has subtitles so no worries. Holy hell oh boy did I love this movie. It wasn’t lacking so much drama that it was boring but it didn’t have too much that it was over the top hectic. They also manage to get some really cute scenes (especially the ending I was squealing). It was good and cute like a really REALLY well written fanfic? Had almost that vibe but better. Overall just a really great movie.
Bridegroom My rating: 5/5 Summary: a documentary about how the lack of marriage equality affected a man when his fiancé suddenly died.
This was just… So sad and real. But really good. It tells their story really well and tugs at your heart.
Boys My rating: 2.7/5 Summary: two boys on the track team fall for each other and one isn’t ready to come out yet.
I… Honestly don’t know how Netflix gave it four stars?? In all honesty the story was pretty dry and too fast paced. Still kinda cute but a little too angsty and suddenly resolved for my taste. From the same productions of The Way He Looks–Wolfe– (but obviously not as good) it had its moments though.
Eat With Me My rating: 3.5/5 Summary: a Chinese cook falls for a British bass player all while his recently separated mother moves in to his apartment.
So the protagonist isnt LGBT, but a Chinese-American woman with a gay son but I still thought it was good enough to mention. This one was a little slow-paced but it didn’t quite drag. There were some moments that were laugh out loud funny but honestly the kicker was the freaking cinematography like DAMN. It was just really aesthetically pleasing and there wasn’t a single shot that wasn’t beautiful! Edit: I THINK THERE WAS A BRIEF BUTTCHEEK OR TWO BUT I CANT REMEMBER
The Perfect Wedding My rating: 3.3/5 Summary: Recovering alcoholic Paul who’s spending the holidays with his parents falls for handsome housemate Gavin, who’s pretending to date Pauls ex.
The acting wasn’t all that great (ok it was pretty bad) but the script was enough to make up for it. Also I ordered this rom com with EXTRA CHEESE. It might be the hopeless romantic in me but god this was like a mediocre-written fanfic it was so cheesy my bowels suffered but it was highly enjoyable. Also the score was original and not many independent movies have great original scores (or ANY scores and it drives me NUTS) but this one was good and fitting.
Blackbird My rating: 5/5 Summary: a black teen struggles with the fact realization that he’s gay, which challenges his faith.
This movie spoke to me, as a bisexual, Christian, poc. Besides that, it was funny, witty, and tugged at the heartstrings. (Also interracial couple!) I saw some negative reviews for it but they came from people who did not understand that being a gay white person is completely different than being a gay poc. Also, I think many critics failed to realize that the main message was about the boys relationship with God and his faith, and how God loves all his children. God is love, and if you don’t have love, you don’t have God. Warnings for suicide, brief child abuse, moments leading up to rape, and mentions of rape after, and brief nudity (buttcheeks).
Cloudburst My rating: 3.5/5 Summary: An elderly lesbian couple escapes from a nursing home to get married in Canada and pick up a hitchhiker along the way.
Thought it would be worse tbh. It’s kind of a darker comedy, one of the main characters is a little raunchy has her mind in the gutter all the time. The ending really got me. Delightfully surprised at how good it was, I mean it’s not the greatest one, but it was enjoyable for sure.
Tangerine My rating: 3.9/5 Summary: when a transgender prostitute gets out of jail, she seeks revenge on her cheating boyfriend.
I DID NOT EXPECT TO LOVE THIS MOVIE AS MUCH AS I DID. It is funny in a really raunchy way and the characters are funny and likable. The story is like when someone’s giving you some good tea I loved it! Production quality isn’t great but it is an independent movie so… Warnings for brief nudity and transphobia.
Fun game for ladies: In front of a geeky dude, say “Silence, Earthling! My name is Darth Vader! I am an extraterrestrial from the planet Vulcan!”
If he gets all mad, condescendingly explains to you why you’re wrong, or starts talking about that “fake geek girl” nonsense, not only do you know that you should stay far, far away from him, but you also get to tell him he’s one to talk about people not having enough nerd cred
Because you just watched a “Back to the Future” reference fly straight over his head

Barbie in the newest movie looks like if Elsa from Frozen was in Mass Effect
Don’t ask me why I know this.
i thought this was a constable frozen edit
Apparently the plot for this movie is that all the stars are dying and barbie needs to find a way to stop the universe succumbing to a cold dark end which is honestly more terrifying than a lot of actual scifi
Barbie and the heat death of the universe
The movie OPENS with THIS SHOT!
Holy… Shit!
SUPER-BAFFLED how good the designs and rendering looks for a BARBIE film. This scene feels like hybrid of Clone Wars and FFX mixed in with some Overwatch-style polish and hero framing.
She also has a proper HANDSOME SPACE DAD wearing the Winter Fashion Catalog from Star Wars’ Hoth planet, and gives her sagely advice from their missing (possibly dead?) DEAD WIFE/MOM when she doubts herself about trying to save the galaxy.
I am STILL trying to process this reality.
Considering how legit good Life In the Dreamhouse was, I’m not too surprised.
I never thought I’d say this…but I might have to see this.
….I want it. Is this out? I want it.
Barbie is so legit tho. People don’t understand how damn legit. The majority of Barbie movies are SOLID, bro. I am a huge fan.
i loved the early 2000s barbie movies as a kid, and i was, a Boyboy
I think people need to be a little less concerned with me being on my phone in social gatherings and more concerned with why their conversations are neither entertaining nor intellectually stimulating
