5 June 2014 - 200th anniversary of the Carabinieri

Today the Arma dei Carabinieri celebrates its 200th birthday with celebrations all over Italy. Created in 1814 in the Regno di Sardegna, they became part of the national armed forces after the Unification of 1861. The Carabinieri took part in many crucial moments for Italy’s history: the Battle of Grenoble, the repression of outlaws (briganti) during the Risorgimento, the rescue efforts after the devastating Messina earthquake of 1908 (and many other major and minor catastrophes up to now), and both World Wars. In 1943, after the Armistice with the Allies, the Carabinieri were among those who suffered from the confusion that followed, and many were deported by the Germans (7 October 1943: 2500 Carabinieri from Rome were deported; the Cephalonia Massacre). Nonetheless, many Carabinieri were also partigiani who fought with selfless courage in the Resistenza movements, or sacrificed themselves to save civilians, like Salvo D’Acquisto, who gave his life, at the age of 22, taking the place of 22 civilians in a Nazi execution. The Carabinieri have also been actively involved to fight terrorism and organized crime. In 2000 they have been officially declared an autonomous Forza Armata. The Carabinieri have always been renowed for their closer relationship with civilians in everyday situations. Unlike other members of the armed forces, their role is not uniquely linked to military actions. The Carabinieri corps are divided in three main groups: local forces, special forces (dealing with various issues from health, to art and environment preservation) and training schools. The Corazzieri were also born as a special division of the Carabinieri too, for example. Official celebrations will be held tonight in Piazza di Siena (inside villa Borghese), Rome, with the reenactment of the traditional Carosello dei Carabinieri.
