ive said this before but it was on my old blog so I'm saying it again
dehumanizing abusers is not effective at doing anything other than make people think they're ontologically incapable of violence
it's also creating a class of people who you can abuse while telling yourself that you're Good and Moral and Not an Abuser.
if you dehumanize the caught abusers then the uncaught abusers will use their humanity as proof of innocence
if you dehumanize the hypothetical abusers you create incentives for false accusations as a means of dehumanization whenever dehumanization is desired for other reasons
This goes for alot of things. Especially abusers, but also basically any other kind of bad person.
Saying "A nazi is an inhuman monster" may sound woke, and saying anything against it, or something like "Hitler was human too", may sound like you're being a nazi, but it is important to realize that the thing that makes abusers and nazis and whatever else so horrible is the fact that all that "evil", really did come from human nature.
And as the post said, if you portray actual bad people as monsters without the capability of doing good, you can then open the gate to point at another bad person and say "Well actually I have seen them acting nice so there's no way they are a nazi/abuser/whatever"
guess what. !

Longtime readers may be aware of how much I relish an excuse to bully a company, so I'm sharing the wealth;
Clothing company Patagonia is currently suing drag queen Pattie Gonia for "irreparable” harm to their brand.
To be clear; Pattie named herself after the region in South America.
So Pattie is asking people to politely ask Patagonia to drop the lawsuit.
I'm extending the invitation to all of you, because suing a drag queen for 'infringement' in the current political cultural landscape is vile. Especially a drag queen who has raised millions of dollars for non-profits, uses her platform to raise awareness for climate activism, and fully aligns with Patagonia's apparent climate-conscious mission statement.
They're claiming they're suing for $1. They're actually asking her to stop using her name, and pay over $1 million in legal fees. They're straight up harassing her.
In contrast, drag queen Jan Sport has a Jansport bag line. It's that easy to just... work with a queen.
Anyway. Be respectful(ish), but feel free to be annoying on Patagnoia's socials, asking them to 'DROP THE LAWSUIT'
I think they have a twitter and tiktok too!
AFTER NEARLY 19 YEARS OF THIS STUPID WEBSITE
also, on web, we just launched an advanced search dialog that should help folks use all the new operators we added.
So true....
Me: "Damn people are REALLY BAD at knowing when to tag their eyestrain art/images...either that or they just don't care about photosenitive epileptic people like me. I feel really sad now." Person: "But Allison, what if they just don't know or understand what qualifies as eyestrain and what doesn't?" Me: "You know what? That could be a factor...While it is always better to be safe rather than sorry (so YES people should always tag eyestrain even if they're unsure if it "counts" or not) maybe you've got a point?"
Anyways! HERE'S YOUR HANDY GUIDE TO WHAT CAN COUNT AS EYESTRAIN! I'm pulling this straight from the Artfight rules page about what needs to be labeled and filtered as eyestrain because it's VERY helpful and VERY accurate! I also know not everybody has an AF account and might not always have access to this handy guide, and this is an important resource; That's why I'm sharing it here! (under the cut)
PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!! THIS IS ABOUT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OTHERS!!!
by the way this is medical. this could save somebody from a migraine all the way to a seizure. this has always been serious. treat this seriously.
yknow i never noticed the sheer rareness of images having ids or alt text on this website until i started adding alt text to my art (and trying to remember to add it to any images i post in general, especially text screenshots) and that makes me kinda sad
I feel like a lot of people just don't know how to do it or are intimidated by the prospect. I was too, actually, and I couldn't find any good guides on how to do it (beyond basic formatting) and most guides boiled down to "just describe what you see and important details!" I really wanted to add alt text bc accessibility is important to me, but I would always get kinda stumped on how to do it.
But then I saw this image, I think in a discord server, and I immediately started doing it. It kinda broke the ice for me
Most importantly, give context! If the image you’re writing a caption for is a visual gag, a newspaper comic, or a reaction image, the most important thing is explaining the context so that someone who can’t see the image can still understand the joke!
A visually impaired reader won’t get why everyone is using a photo of a cute kitten as a reaction image to a thread if you get too bogged down in describing unimportant visual details in the background that don’t contribute to the joke’s punchline. You have to straightforwardly tell them that the kitten is making an adorably grumpy face. If you leave that detail out, the image loses its intended meaning, leaving the reader who can’t see it feeling totally lost.

It’s okay to enjoy villians:
* Because they provide a safe outlet to explore what motivates people to behave badly.
* Because a powerful, angry character can be cathartic to someone who is traumatized.
* Because they often have traits that neurodivergent and LGBTQ people can relate to because those traits have been used as shorthand for evil in media for years.
* Because they add stakes, depth and excitement to a story.
* Because they’re not real.
* Because they’re fun.
a friend (hi lemmy) of mine said 'and for what. posts? its all for posts' while we were talking about something but its completely shattered my mindset online now when i see someone tearing into something and i wonder why. its literally all for posts.
a lot of people talk about why it seems media literacy is down or why good faith discussions or analysis of things has flown out the window but when you step back and go 'this is literally all for posts' you realize that it doesnt matter what anyones saying so long as it catches your attention and the best way to catch someones attention is to make them Feel Bad. or to make them angry. like literally the lowest amount of effort possible It's All For Posts. the currency of Posts
when you combine this with the fact that any person with enough followers can essentially become an internet micro celebrity and be offered brand deals and that some sites offer interaction revenue you start to see the rot at the center of it right. like the goal here is rarely to actually improve things its to Get Your Attention because that attention means your money. jingling keys in your face while i stuff my hand in your pockets.
