yes I want to protect all women but do I have to run defense for conservative women? must I take a stand for the plight of tradwives? I don't mean in a material sense -- the political stance "all women are people and deserve human rights" does not exclude tradwives, because there are no conditions I am putting upon women here to be counted as people, to be deserving of rights. It is the tradwife, the conservative woman, who is playing that game. She plays it for the sake of her own material benefit; she sees no escape from her situation, no alternative world risking the reward of compliance, and she has been told all her life that she will learn to love her station, and so she complies. Certainly I feel a sense of pity and compassion for her predicament. I see the importance of dismantling the structures which encourage her to take up this position that will ultimately hurt her more than it helps her, even if in the moment she might feel that she is being cared for, seen, and even heard, by saying all the right things and diminishing her sense of self. But is it my job, to personally, specifically, go, "I stand with the tradwives in their plight against the patriarchy, I stand with the conservative women in their plight against the patriarchy" when these women are using the agency they do still have to actively harm other women by pushing the patriarchal agenda itself? When these women are complicit in the violence against any woman who is an "outsider" compared to them, because hunting "outsiders" gives them a little more in the way of power?
Is it not enough for me to stand for all women and be understood?
im also obsessed with the interpretation of the blood ocean not being inherently evil or malevolent, in fact, it starts off rather loving. or at least, what it perceives to be loving. it wants simon to become part of it. it could've absorbed the iron lung and mutated it so long ago - we saw how quickly things went to shit in the final act. but its slow, always there in the corner for simon to be constantly aware of it, like a friend letting you know theyre always in your corner. it keeps the oxygen supply going despite the fact it should've run out days ago. it throws him into the cave. it talks to him, tries to entice him to join in anyway it can. come see the truth, it could save you, it has the answers you've been looking for. if that doesn't work, maybe guilt tripping is the answer, reflect on filament station, simon. "i see you". an acknowledgement. simon runs out of tape so the blood mutates to hold the photograph button for him. but the more defiant simon becomes, the more focused on his own survival he is, the angrier the ocean becomes. the creature couldve swallowed him so many times. clearly the radiation isn't actually a threat to it, we see it being blasted so many times in the end, but it continues its chase after him once it kills ava. the creature backing off in the caves after the photograph was a conscious decision. it couldve lashed out right then and there, but it backed off. "hey, im not a threat, im just watching, im right here for when you're ready".
just like eden, just like the COI, the ocean tries to force simon into a life he never really wanted. because he never seems to get a choice.
i just can't stop thinking about an ocean that thinks itself benevolent, when really, its just as cruel as the rest of humanity. or maybe, its humanity that is as cruel as nature. or is it a God? does it even matter?
I think Markiplier is one of the few major social media personalities who actually deserves his audience. Seeing him crying over the overwhelming support for Iron Lung, a project he personally poured heart, and soul, and love into is just such a nice change from the "Mr Beast-ification" that seems to have taken over a large chunk of the internet. He's said before he has more money than he knows what to do with and I'm so, so glad that he's putting it to good use.
I feel like Tumblr should really appreciate Iron Lung even if not Markiplier fans whatsoever. It's got all the good stuff. A man being thrown around, going crazy, facing cosmic horrors all while being covered in blood. What's not to love

Fish vs Tree Theory:
The Ocean Anglerfish (the one stalking the subs) is a creature made up of the crew of Sub 8 mashed into one being who succumbed to the will of the Eldritch Anglerfish (the thing in the light that most likely caused the rapture) through infection from the tainted blood oceans. Trying to infect other humans who come down there and keeping them away from whatever Sub 8 discovered is part of it's master's will. The thing haunting Simon's sub was a vision of what he would become if he let himself be taken as well.
The philosophy of Eden, the faction Simon came from, is that when humans die they should use their bodies to nourish the trees to help the people that come after them. IDK how that leads to "we should all just die now" so I'm gonna say he and his brother got tangled up with a radical faction and didn't realize their intentions until it was too late.
Anyway this is mostly thematic stuff but it's "devolving/returning to the depths and let your will be consumed to ensure your survival" versus "ascending/reaching up to the sky and sacrificing yourself so that others may find a way to survive".
Even though Simon desperately wants to survive, in the end he chooses sacrificing himself out of hope instead of sacrificing his humanity out of despair; and he destroys the Ocean Anglerfish/the former corrupted humans as well so that they can't prevent humanity from getting the information.
(Whether the info the subs gathered is the key to survival or just enough to give the remaining humans explanation and closure is a different theory.)
Reverse Theory:
The Quiet Rapture was actually reversed - all the planets and stars and whatever are fine, and it was the space stations/ships floating around that got pulled into an alternate dimension by the Eldritch Anglerfish devoid of stars and habitat planets.
...This really has no basis other than "it makes more sense to me that a being wanting to poke at humanity would grab all the little ones floating around in space rather than destroying all the worlds and stars and leaving the space swimmers alone". Heck, it could have grabbed them to study in preparation for an actual invasion of our dimension.
"But what about the oceans of human blood?!" Well, that stuff's obviously not normal blood, it's got some weird eldritch assimilating shit in it; so my proposal is that the blood ocean was not originally made of human blood until it absorbed the first humans into it, at which point it changed it's composition to become closer to actual human blood in order to easier assimilate the other humans that it would lure in.
The findings from Sub 8 + 13 that Simon sent up in the box are going to show the other humans that the oceans weren't originally human blood and that something down there is trying to lure them in, which is why the Anglerfish didn't want the info getting to them.
