Came up in messages/replies a couple times now so slapping my thoughts on a post for convenience.
Connie during 'Dewey Wins' always made sense to me. ┐(´ー`)┌
Your best friend chose to give up and hand his life to the gems who's been wanting him dead, over fighting alongside you for a chance of overcoming them.
(And it's not even like they tried all the options. They didn't even try Stevonnie.)
Emphasizing, he chose possible death (or possibly worse) over your help.
That's not only terrifying, but also painful. Coming out unscathed while knowing someone you love is flying off potentially to their doom is undoubtedly very stressful. And it's understandable to be very frustrated thinking about what could've been done differently.
Mind you, before they never had a fight together where they lost. It made sense (at least for her) that the confidence of winning again was high.
Note that even when someone is hurting more, you're still allowed to feel hurt yourself. And it's not "making it about you", it's acknowledging your own feelings. You're not a robot.
That moment at the ship was the reason she trained. She did not want to be useless. She was snapped out of a grooming situation with his promise to fight together. Just for him to push her away to deal with the problem alone.
On top of that, she already experienced people diminishing her relevancy in the team/group with Pearl, Lapis and Peridot. But Steven doing it? I know Steven was very well meaning, but still. That gotta sting more. 😬
Obviously we understand where Steven is coming from. The gem lifestyle was already wearing him off where he's more fearful of fatal outcomes and giving in more to the idea that sacrificing his own self is the solution. It's brave, also tragic. The irony of fearing danger while lowering self-preservation.
At the same time Connie has been growing more confident. And I know she was feeling upset because she has already learned self respect by then. She felt hurt, she acknowledged it, told Steven how she honestly felt, got disappointed that he dismissed it, and separated herself to have time to process it.
It's not even putting into account that she was a 12/13 year old. Emotional crisis are extra impactful for kids. ( She cut her hair and her whole outfit aesthetic permanently changed after that. I think her parents helped her handle her go through her emotions. )
So, yeah, I was way more put off by the off model anatomy in that scene. (They were off model in parts of their making up scene too. Whhyyyyyy 😭 )
