Ground Beta
Character: Umeko Watanabe Quirk: Elasticity
It wasnât the first time she had been here.Â
The first time had been the second night after everyone had moved into the dorms.
She had been curious before that for sure, but she had been too paranoid about being suspended to come before. But now that they were in the dorms, for their safety no less, she figured they wouldnât send her home. At worst they might restrict her to the dorm building, and that was hardly a punishment at all. Not like being stuck at home would have been.
But no one had seen her the first time. Sheâd waited for the shoe to drop for a few days before she realized that she was in the clear. Or maybe someone had seen her, but it wasnât against the rules? Its not like she had broke curfew or had destroyed anything⊠Either way, it had filled her with the desire to come back.
So she did.
It was slightly eerie, walking through the abandoned, scale model of a city, just like it had been last time. It felt vaguely post-apocalyptic, like all of humanity was gone and she was alone. It was getting close to sunset, but there was still enough light that she could see clearly.Â
Sheâd heard her classmates in the general studies combat courses describe the practical exam enough, she could imagine exactly what she would have done if she had been allowed to take it â especially after facing the robots from that exam in the first leg of the Sports Festivalâs obstacle course.
She hadnât dared to last time, but this time she would. Her arms lengthened, shooting out to grab a light post before swinging her way to a ledge, and from there a rooftop. The speed of it brought the wind whipping through her hair and she swallowed up a laugh that bubbled up in her throat.
It was exhilarating.
Combat classes for general studies students were cut and dry things, in a dojo-like setting, practicing hand to hand, maybe a bit of quirk to quirk. Nothing like this. Where you could pretend, where you could practice as though you were really in a city hunting down a villain.
Umeko continued to swing from place to place, forcing her arms to stretch past their comfortable five feet limit since she was only holding each position for a brief period each time. The burn of it was welcome, finally getting to push herself past her limits rather than abiding by them meekly.
Every few meters she would come down to the pavement below with a joyful shout as she pretended to destroy the examination bots with the velocity of her rubbery fists smashing into the pavement. In her mind she kept a running tally of her imaginary points, grinning from ear to ear.
Lost to the fantasy of it all, she didnât pay as much attention as she should to the time or the surroundings outside of what was directly in her swinging path across the faux cityscape.
Character: Haruko Nekozawa
Quirk: feline
Haruko dashed along the rooftops in Ground Beta, letting the wind whip her hair around. Sometimes when the pressure from hero classes got too overwhelming, she would come out here to run. The physical exertion left no room for the anxiety her recent transfer brought.
She catches a noise and skids to a stop. Had she been found out? Not only was she out after curfew, but she was out of bounds without permission.
A shout and an impact. Pause. A shout and an impact. Pause.
A student? Haruko didnât know other students would be crazy enough to come out here too. She changed course to check it out.
She aligalights on the edge of a building near the other student. A girl with a stretching quirk. How interesting.
âWith a quirk like that, you wouldnât really worry about impacts. Using gravity to increase your velocity and damage would help compensate for lack of strength. A good strategy.â The words are out before she can stop them. Her tail flicks; she thought she had kicked that old habit of thinking out loud. So much for not drawing attention to herself.
Haruko doubts the girl can see her well - between her black hair, black fur, and dark track suit - so she drops down under one of the street lights and leans against it.
âSo what brings you out this late at night?â
When the voice of an observer finally hits her, she nearly loses her grip on the handholds she had found on the side of a building. Quickly, guitily, Umeko lands and draws her arms back in to their normal length. She ignores the unwelcome pinch in her knees from the too-rough landing, purple eyes darting around to try and spot whoever had spoken.
It was dark⊠much darker than she had realized. She must be out past curfew at this point⊠A fact that didnât help her nerves in the slightest.
When the girl about her age leaps into the streetlight she relaxes slightly. Someone else breaking curfew was âBest Case Scenarioâ at this point, on the list of people who could have stumbled upon her embarrassing Practical Exam fantasies.
Embarrassment steels her spine as Umeko adopts a purposefully easy stance, trying to look as though she were not humiliated at being caught daydreaming in the slightest.Â
âThat was the plan, yeah. Though Iâm not lacking strength. I can expand my muscles. I just didnât want to break the concrete.â Umeko hooks her thumbs into the pockets of her jeans, trying to look composed by responding to the girlâs comments from the shadow first. Her voice is casual and even, the picture of someone who is definitely not where they shouldnât be, thank you very much.
âJust wanted to get in extra training, same as you Iâd betâŠâ Her eyes narrow as she finally recognizes the cat girl from the 2nd Year Arena Sports Festival clips she had watched awhile ago.Â
ââŠsempai.â She adds, still perhaps too casual, but it was an attempt at politeness at least.
âAh, Iâve been caught.â Haruko flushes and smiles somewhere between nervous and happy. âI guess I did stand out this year.â
And she is happy. She worked hard this year to get noticed this year and she succeeded. But sometimes she wishes she hadnât stood out quite so much. She wasnât used to the attention she was getting both in and out of school, and coupled with the low key animosity from her new class⊠Well. There were a lot of reasons she started sneaking out to run.
âAlso, uhm. I didnât mean to imply you werenât strong or anything. Earlier. I just, that is⊠my little brother likes observing quirks and we used to watch the sports fests together and comment on the students. So I still kinda analyze when I see a new quirk and I thought your application was really smart and it just slipped out and Iâm just gonna⊠Shut up now.â
She trails off at the end of her rambling and ducks her head, gold eyes flicking down. Her tail twitches behind her.
How embarrassing; first she blurts out her thoughts then she gets flustered and rambles a defense. So much for not being awkward anymore.
She brings a hand to her face, both to hide a little and to give herself a comforting lick. She shouldnât let it get to her so much. The other girl was probably feeling just as out of place. Afterall, Haruko had caught her training alone in a restricted zone past curfew.
Umekoâs defensive stance relaxes a little bit, at the older girlâs apparent nerves, though itâs still not completely open by any stretch. Thereâs probably a lot of similarities between her expression and that of some of Harukoâs prior classmates. It wasnât every year that someone actually managed to make the jump from General Studies to Heroics after all. And it was a feat that was probably met more often than not with jealousy rather than awe or respect. Umeko wasnât above the petty jealousy-- especially not on a night like tonight where the fantasy of being in the Heroics course was so close to the surface of her thoughts.
âItâs fine, sempai. I didnât take offense. You were dead on about the technique I was practicing.â
Umeko tore her eyes off of the cat girl with some effort, using the excuse of stretching as a post-workout cooldown to soften the rudeness of the gesture. The younger girl cracked joints and rotated her limbs. The burn of stretching past her limits wasnât too intense-- but still, it was probably a good, proper time to stop, even if she hadnât been caught out. Â
