the way Fitz repeatedly asserted that Buckkeep's atmosphere was a more pleasing and welcoming one once Kettricken was there because the keep had the "touch of a woman again" but never acknowledged the fact that it was first and foremost the touch of a Chyurdan that made it feel so. It was the tapestries woven in the mountain style. The simplicity of Kettricken's designs and their openness. The familiar gardening techniques she employed that he didn't realize were familiar, her natural focus on water and tranquility and light and all the things little Keppet would have absorbed like a plant when he was growing up. The idea that somewhere deep down he recognized and was drawn to all these little aspects of the culture that was denied to him. The way it made Buckkeep feel more like home, even if he was also constantly remarking on how changed the space was, too. Something I ponder and consider sometimes.

I don’t know if anyone is active on rotetwt, but for those who have, have you seen that one user who says that the “Hobb Series” is terrible and claims to have read the farseer trilogy at 8 YEARS OLD?

hhrmm… wintrow… this may or may not be something of a big ask but i’m curious what you think about the monastery. wintrow loves it & wintrow wants to return to it & it was the first & only place wintrow ever felt treasured but, at the same time. it’s a monastery! with all that entails!

PHEW yeah. tbf we dont know much of the specifics of how the monastery was ran, so i'm gonna make a lot of assumptions here.

i think you've put the finger on it as to why he feels that way—it was the first and only place he very felt treasured. by his own account his relationship with his family was estranged and he was often criticised, so as daunting as going to the monastery was, it came with a degree of acceptance and freedom (especially in gender expression) his family never showed him and that must've been a relief, even if it means living the monk life and doing a lot of manual labour and skilling. he didn't really have any other better point of comparison.

but also i do think he's one of those lucky ones that actually got to enjoy what the monastery had to offer, even if it took until "the last two years or so" to get there. he's a very curious & creative person and the monastery offered him a venue to explore that, perhaps more than a trader's son would have. he could read and learn medicine and make stained glass art and think about things that actually interested him. which was critical for him learning to think for himself, even within the constraints of religion. the few contradictions of Sa we see do pose very insightful questions that inspire self-reflection, and he's clearly got a knack for it.

to make a parallel to fitz, the monastery is his Chade Education moment. it's something it turns out he's good at and he flourished under that praise and sense of belonging and purpose. and wintrow does seem to enjoy a stable and reliable lifestyle (he HATES change), so long as it makes sense and seems fair to him, so he may be overlooking the things that were not so good. maybe once he grew up a little more he would find it stifling where once it had been a solace. i guess we'll never know.
