Apropos of absolutely nothing, here is a list of (fanfic) WIPs I've got going on right now:

Reborn: longfic for Wheel of Time, following Logain Ablar's arc through canon. Mostly canon compliant, but starting to get more canon divergent as I hit the later books.

A Tale of Two Spheres: a Witcher longfic in which Ciri helps Regis find his home world from before the Conjunction... But things go badly wrong, and Geralt must step in to help. This has been more or less fully planned out but I am in drafting hell and this has not seen the light of day (AO3). Save me.

My Heart Knew: LOTR longfic about an Éomer and Lothíriel slow burn. I have extensive notes but got stuck drafting three chapters in, and so it's also stuck in my vault. Send help.

I won't announce my descent to madness but there will be signs: a Wheel of Time fic series set in the Age of Legends, following Elan Morin Tedronai / Ishamael's descent to madness. I'm just adding to it whenever the mood, which is depression, strikes.

Bonus one-shots I want to write:

Dutiful x Elliania x Civil goofiness post-Tawny Man Trilogy, in which Dutiful and Elliania must first figure out how they'll get past Civil's internalised homophobia. Potential parallels with Burrich x Chivalry X Patience, maybe?

An adaptation of a dream I once had about Realm of the Elderlings, in which the Fool has a prophetic dream from before his time at Clerres, but it reaches Fitz in the present.

There are so many more in my WIP folder but the rest are barely even a thought. You'll see them when you see them ig.

the way Fitz repeatedly asserted that Buckkeep's atmosphere was a more pleasing and welcoming one once Kettricken was there because the keep had the "touch of a woman again" but never acknowledged the fact that it was first and foremost the touch of a Chyurdan that made it feel so. It was the tapestries woven in the mountain style. The simplicity of Kettricken's designs and their openness. The familiar gardening techniques she employed that he didn't realize were familiar, her natural focus on water and tranquility and light and all the things little Keppet would have absorbed like a plant when he was growing up. The idea that somewhere deep down he recognized and was drawn to all these little aspects of the culture that was denied to him. The way it made Buckkeep feel more like home, even if he was also constantly remarking on how changed the space was, too. Something I ponder and consider sometimes.

Big fan of characters with abandonment issues so profound they leave claw marks in everything they touch but would sooner gnaw off their own leg than admit that they desire kindness and safety

obviously fool’s fate changed my life and whatnot but to this day the only rote moment that made me actively bawl was the scene in assassin’s apprentice when chade stops summoning fitz for the purpose of shrewd’s loyalty test and he starts crying in his bed because he thinks everyone who ever cared about him has abandoned him. it literally makes my throat close up to think about. hobb writes the misery and grief of a lonely child with such sickening reality and it’s what keeps assassin’s apprentice in my top 5 i do not care what anybody else says

The part of Royal Assassin where Fitz is with Molly and then suddenly is describing her as pale and blonde literally sends chills down my back each and every time I read it. I remember when I read it the first time I had to read the sentences over and over because I was thought maybe I had imagined Molly wrong the entire time. And even this reread I was confused because I completely forgot this happened. It creeps up on you and then the realization is like a knife in the gut. It makes me feel so sick for Fitz. Verity telling Fitz to guard his thoughts and then he completely did not do that at all. Molly telling Fitz it was as if he was taken over by another man entirely? Yuck! It makes me ill.

And so when I was eight, she sent me to Lady Patience, to page for her for a year and a half. Needless to say, I was not treated like a coddled princeling there. POV you are fitzchivalry farseer and you have just survived an attempted assassination and you’re hobbling out with your barely functioning poisoned body and only walking because youre being physically held up by your pseudo father figure (one of like 5 pseudo parents??? none of whom are capable of or willing to actually raise a bastard) who you just got back on speaking terms with like 10 seconds ago while actively on your death bed. and youre only up and walking at all to try to thwart a secondary assassination happening in a different country that you got magic-psychic-death-dreams of. and it’s already awkward because you two still have this fight simmering about your cool shared dog magic that burrich went to like magic conversion therapy about or some shit.

and then as you’re half coherent trying to execute a plan you float the idea of using some jewelry your pseudo kinda step mother forced you to take by piercing your ear with it with no warning

and burrich is like holy fuck why do you have that.

and you’re like. idk girl things just happen to me idek can we lock in on the assassination

and burrich is like i gave that to your dad. thought he’d be buried with it.

and then you have like approx zero minutes to process ANY of this because you have to stop the assassination of your only family member who gives you complete and actionable information from the bottom of a hot spring your half brother tried to drown you in.

Something about that scene in the Queen's Garden atop the tower filled me with a quiet horror since the first time I read it and hasn't left me since. Oh, Fitz.

The funniest thing I've ever seen in a book is a fantasy series that had a love triangle and the two men's names were Brashen and Grag. Like yeah, I think Grag has a chance here.

WIP Wednesday

Thanks so much for the tag, @tragediegh!

I think this time around I'd love to share the opening for My Heart Knew, an Éomer and Lothíriel slow burn longfic that I started a while back. Maybe sharing some of it here might give me the motivation to actually continue writing and post it sometime 😅

The delegation arrived with the dawn.

Above the din of hooves thundering over earth, glad voices rose in song, though Éomer could not yet make out the words. The silver and blue banners of the royal house of Dol Amroth blew merrily in the chilly morning air, heralding a group of one hundred riders strong. It had not been long ago when these selfsame banners were raised for war; now they brought the promise of old friends, and a woman who would be his queen. Despite his misgivings, Éomer’s heart swelled with joy. 

Behind him, his own contingent—and the excited townsfolk of Edoras, who had accompanied them down the hill on foot—cheered raucously at the sight of the newcomers. In response, a familiar figure at the head of the approaching delegation lifted a hand in greeting, and the crowd screamed still louder, causing Éomer’s ears to ring.
