This is where I indulge in my favorite animated shows and movies! Left for a while, came back 99% for Vox from Hazbin Hotel — a show I have very mixed opinions of, but I definitely love Mr. TV Head Man. (This blog is NOT spoiler-free, but I tag "spoilers" for the first couple of days. This blog IS leak-free.)

Vox wants recognition, Alastor wants safety, Valentino wants love. I can't wait for season 4 to shine light on Velvette's vulnerability issues and how wretchedly she wants control, to protect herself, to thrive, to rise. She has a vicious hunger for violence that gets so overlooked in the fandom. It reflects an inner frustration that results with her curt, volatile attitude and proclivity to tear other people down while making herself untouchable. If we thought the first three were bad, she's going to be even more terrifying.

I think the part that upsets me most about RS discourse is the assumption that Vox’s anger and resentment of Alastor are only about his unrequited ROMANTIC (and implicitly sexual) feelings for him, with an undercurrent of those feelings being seen as inherently selfish and shallow.

When in reality what Vox seems most torn up about is losing what he thought was his first ever FRIENDSHIP, and that pain haunting him well into the present day even when he’s found new friends who love him unconditionally. Alastor’s favorite way to play into this is to refer to him with friendly terms like “old pal” or “my friend.” Season 2 centers heavily on recognizing the friends that are there for you and it’s because of their love for Vox that Velvette and Valentino are the ones to both defeat and save him.

So it’s frustrating to see Vox’s feelings for Al reduced to just “he’s just a bitter incel who’s mad he didn’t get to fuck him” out of people who allegedly recognize there are other kinds of love besides romantic or sexual. Even if Vox’s feelings were ALSO romantic, acting like “romantic=sex=shallow and selfish” is ALSO incredibly short-sighted.

And even if Alastor didn’t reciprocate Vox’s romantic feelings, he still had no respect for Vox’s platonic feelings, either. It wasn’t just the fact that Alastor rejected him, but that he did so in such a purposefully cruel way that included denying he ever liked Vox platonically. That is what seemed to hurt Vox the most. So, once again, framing it as though Alastor was “betrayed” by Vox isn’t accurate, because Alastor had no respect for Vox’s platonic feelings, either.

Is Vox wrong to keep holding a grudge? Of course he is! But he’s not a Nice Guy or an incel, and Alastor is not innocent in this either. That’s what makes their whole dynamic so fascinating! But reducing it to *just* an unrequited romance is pretty shallow and misses how much is built on their platonic feelings for each other!

Do you think Vox would play golf? I feel like that's an assumption that crops up because "rich white guy" so I don't love the idea but I also hate golf so I might be biased. It does have the benefit of not being a team sport

I can think of few things Vox is less likely to do for fun than spend hours wandering around a vast expanse of empty land while hitting a ball with a stick occasionally. He would be so bored.

Actually, I think he would honestly rather watch paint dry than play golf. It's only marginally less exciting, and it would be done a lot sooner.

Actually while I'm still somewhat on the topic (I say, though it was one single post yesterday), I'm not so sure Valentino knows how close Alastor and Vox used to be. His surprise at hearing Alastor describe their past relationship as, "You and I were the closest thing to equals as I'd imagined down here," is always simmering on the back burner of my mind and what I'm getting from it is that he knows the bare bones about it.

He gets to Hell in the 1970's, when Alastor and Vox would've been ten to twenty years into their rivalry, so it's a status quo that he wouldn't necessarily question. But if he did, if he ever asked, I can't imagine that Vox would go, "Well, we were close for a few years when I first became an Overlord. I'd never met someone who made me feel like him before, I thought I'd found a true kindred spirit, and I wanted him in my life forever and for us to grow even more powerful together, so I proposed we formally became a team. To which he laughed in my face, called me weak and pathetic, and denied that we were ever friends. So. You can guess why we haven't been on good terms since."

For one, Vox obviously dislikes talking about the rejection, both because it's still like a sore bruise on his heart, and because it was a hit to his ego, being humiliated and made feel like a fool like that. For two, Vox's relationship to Val is defined by the walls that he built back up after, having allowed himself to be vulnerably in love with Alastor for the first time in his entire existence, getting so hurt. Being honest regarding the most heart-crushing moment of his afterlife would require a level of emotional intimacy that I don't think Vox has allowed himself to reach with Val in their entire time together. Besides, talking about his underlying motives for asking Alastor to be his partner could also put into question the nature of their relationship (as business associates and friends who sleep with each other), which we know, textually, that Vox refuses to label as a committed romantic partnership. So, between not wanting to talk about it in general and very likely not wanting Val specifically to know due to how it makes him emotionally vulnerable in front of him, I imagine he probably told him something along the lines of, "He's the only competition we have left that refuses to lay down," and perhaps, to explain the possible rumours about them having been friends in the late 50's, "We used to get along better before I found out he's a prick that hates progress and would rather die in the past alongside his medium."

The more I think about it the surer I am that Val doesn't grasp the full baggage between them (and Velvette even less so), which also explains how blindsided the other two Vees were by Vox going completely off the rails over Alastor. (And, for the record, I don't think Alastor grasps it either lmfao he's half of this fucking dynamic and he doesn't really understand what he actually did to Vox.)
