A lot of the fandom's discourse with Vox and Alastor can best be summed up as "siding with your favorite character while disregarding that the other character(s) have feelings too" (and I've certainly been guilty of this *gestures at blog theme*).

#they are both emotionally constipated jackasses who cannot process their feelings for one another and so behave stupidly #and that stupidity has a body count

As much as I love the theory of Alastor’s crashout in the bar being caused by his fear of being used, I also think we are overlooking the much more simple option of “local edgelord was getting attached to someone so he opted for the most logical course of action which was to shut that someone out so cruelly they would forever hate him”

We see Alastor getting attached to the hotel crew in s1 and then beat himself up about it after he almost dies for them, we see him almost foil his s2 plan to defend Niffty — so we know that, despite what he proclaims, he gets attached quite easily.

I think it’s very possible that Alastor had finally found a friend and got so scared that he resolved to have Vincent hate him forever because he couldn’t afford to be weak.
