Jimmy is a cheater in previous relationships, that’s for damn sure. It’s not something he hid from you. So why are you so surprised when he comes home late, a smear of lipstick on his neck and smelling like the perfume of someone else?
He thinks it’s annoying if you try to talk about it-- after all, what is there to talk about? He got his dick wet, but he came home to you. So cheer up. Maybe he wouldn’t cheat on you if you weren’t such a cry baby.
He’s surprised when you actually try to call things off; most of the other people he’s been with stick with him for at least a couple other side bitches.
His first reaction is anger. How could you blame him at a time like this? Isn’t it obvious he’s been so fucking stressed lately?!
Then blaming. Maybe if you took better care of his needs, he wouldn’t have to sink into another whore. Note: it doesn’t matter if your libido matches his, if you literally take his take whenever he wants, he will still place blame on you. It doesn’t matter if you met his standards beforehand, he’ll throw up any time you haven’t fucked or sucked him. That time that you were super sick? Well, that’s why he cheated. You couldn’t place his needs above your own.
Then, when both of those obviously lead to you getting more upset, he goes into oh shit i fucked it up this time mode. You know those videos of women confronting their cheating boyfriends and he ends up begging on his hands and knees for forgiveness? That’s him.
He’s not proud of his actions, but anything to soften you up, right?
Needless to say, his groveling doesn’t work. He watches as you leave out the door of his shitty apartment.
He plots, he schemes, he knows it’s only a matter of how he’ll get you back, not a matter of if. What have you complained about missing in the relationship? His attention?
Calling, texting, voice messages-- this is the most singular focus attention he has given you in ages! He’s just shy of benign overwhelming for the first few days, then it cranks up to being too much.
He manages to get you to agree to see him for lunch. It’s been a while since he treated you to a date out and it’s better late than never, he figures. He lets you order what you want with limited comments, though he can’t stop himself from making one or two passive aggressive remarks about what you order.
He listens to you, like… actually listens. Sure, it’s just to discover things to make you fall for him again and things to use to his advantage. It’s not even an active thought process. It’s just how he is.
His thumbs rubs your knuckle and he invites you back to his apartment. You turn him down, obviously. You know exactly what he’s getting at with that glint in his eye-- you may love him still but you can’t just accept a nice fuck in return for his cheating.
His next methods are slow and time consuming, using things he knew about you before you dated, while you were together, and things you’ve vented to him during your dates. Hell, he even manages to get you to come over and he doesn’t fuck you! Granted it was only because he masturbated before inviting you over, but still! He has to show you that he sees you as something more than a bed warmer.
His methods of wearing you down aren’t as overt as they could be, mostly because you’ve shown that that kinda mess won’t work on you.
one of my very favorite obscure story tropes is when there’s an episode/plotline/tabletop campaign session where the conceit is ‘each member of the gang gets trapped in a specially tailored dream/nightmare/illusory mindscape and has to break out’
my favorite addition to this trope is when the gang has to pass through everyone’s specially tailored nightmare scape and it’s just one gut punching trauma after the next that their friends help them through
My favorite example of this is in Scooby doo Mystery Incorporated season 1 episode 17 Escape from Mystery Manor. I adore the way that each room is obviously tailored to different members that they think is about them at first bc it’s too perfect but really was designed for the previous gang. I love the parallels, I love the drama of it. But most importantly I love the way they work through it.
