The first dog treats were made in 1860 by an electrician by the name of James Spratt, however the iconic bone shaped dog treats were only produced in 1907 by Carleton Ellis, an organic chemist. Originally, the dog treats were circles but when offered to the taste tester (Carleton Ellisâ dog who I sadly could not find the name of), the dog refused to eat it.
Rather than change the ingredients, he changed the shape to mimic the bones that dogs were often given (as butchers would sell meat with the bones still in and, after eating the meat, owners often gave the dogs the leftover bones). The professional taste tester accepted the bone shaped treat! The treats were coined Milk-Bones in 1915 due to the fact that one (1) ingredient was waste milk!
The rights to the name was bought by Nabisco a few years later.

I remember that the recipe also included a recipe for icing (which I did not make because it was a very⌠unusual icing recipe) but that is all I rememberâŚ

- Stand mixer. Not very difficult but I remember they needed to rest in the fridge for a long time which was very time consuming!
