i have no idea how to respond to this. we have all been in absolutely helpless hysterics about it for the last thirty minutes. this is by far the most deranged ask I have received about my personal life on this website in my fifteen year career on here, and that is saying quite a lot

i can't decide which part of this message is my favorite, but if I HAD to say, probably the part where you appear to be entirely in earnest about this? in almost any other case I would assume a message like this was an elaborate way of insulting me or my partner or both, but I really genuinely don't think that's the case for you, which is actually MORE confusing. its just so compelling. there's so many layers here. i want to hire someone to cross stitch this for me so I can hang it in our living room. i can hear ship intermittently breaking out in peals of hysterical laughter in the kitchen

This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.

This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).

Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct

It's also ableist. In the story I'm working on, there's a character with one eye, and the grammar check constantly tries to correct my sentences to her having two eyes.

Same with a character who's an amputee. Grammar check insists that he has two hands. He's gotta have two hands. Every sentence in which I refer to him using his hand and I use 'hand' singular and not 'hands' plural? Wrong. Correct that shit.

Fuck off. My characters have been injured, they are disabled, and they don't need to be fixed on any level, least of all grammatically.

"But this time its different!" Its really not. The Cuban missile crisis almost had the world blow up, and it didn't. The cold war that set the stage for it existed in a constant state of the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Our world map today looks completely different from how it looked a thousand years ago. Nations and empires have risen and collapsed. Wars have been waged over petty bullshit that changed names and borders. Empires that were once thought invincible and perpetual crumbled to dust within a peasant's lifetime as they tilled their fields and worried about crop failure. The invention of flight, motion pictures, and the automobile chased the coattails of WWI and the great depression. Children played mischief games and elders complained about kids these days being too soft and sensitive during the fall of the Roman empire.

Our generational struggles are not uniquely terrible compared to any other generation's. Your life will not come to a dramatic and cinematic end to all of humanity and the world as we know it any time soon. The world will change and evolve as it always has throughout all of history and all of its constant perpetual bullshit, and you will continue to live on regardless of the outcome. Yes, even if you're queer. Yes, even if you're trans. Yes, even if you're neurodivergent. Yes, even if you're racialized. Set up your 401k and find ways to guard against becoming senile not if, but when you grow old.

That response isn’t surprising at all. There’s been stuff written for years about how the way concepts like climate change is presented is often counterproductive because when brains are presented with terrifying, seemingly unchangeable things, they just shut down. They become incapable of doing things like imagining a future. It’s not just people using it as a cop-out, it’s a well documented function of how the brain works

That doesn’t mean it’s not a problem, but it does mean that if you’re interested in actually reaching these people you have to tailor your approach with the brain in mind. Just telling people to get over it or shaming them or whatever isn’t going to work. Because, despite its constant deployment, when has that ever been an effective strategy?

Drawing attention to how past people have survived similar circumstances can help. Pointing out good things that people are doing right now can help. Giving them small, meaningful, achievable actions. Connecting them with a community. Helping them see a positive future, even if it’s not the most “realistic,” with people like them in it can help

Our generational struggles aren’t unique, but we do have more information easily available than anyone before us. And while it can be used to paralyze through nonstop messages of doom, it can also be used to help solve those same problems
