II . . . LITTLE LOTTIE, FRANCE AWAITS
The bustling city of Paris rolled by the carriage window, citizens, women, men, and children alike, walking down the stone sidewalks and carriages were being pulled on the cobbled streets. The architecture that built one aspect of French culture spiraled above me, small details that would be missed by the unwatchful eye sitting in wait as it composed a scene of beauty and passion; France, Paris!, it was all so intoxicating even from within the carriage, I couldnโt resist taking in a deep breath as the song of hooves clanking away on the street and laughter and chatter from the streets filtering into the carriage, continued on.
โDonโt get used to it all yet, Lottie,โ Kou would tease upon seeing my deep breath in and out, noticing as my relaxed and almost homey expression; One I frequently wore once I was able to assure myself that I was in France, and this wasnโt another daydream.
โOh hush, Kou! Let me soak it all in.โ The grin stretched upon my face, โItโs going to be my new home for the season, after all! Well, that is, if Iโm able to pass through auditions well enough that I can be a part of the ensemble.โ There was always an itching feeling in the back of my head, a doubt that was too far of a leap; That I should have picked somewhere else in France to start, slowly building myself up until I was truly ready for the Lotus Populaire. But, then, there were also the years of courage I had built up from countless sessions in London, where I ran as lead in the Operas there! So surely, this shouldnโt be so different.
Kou would let out a snicker-like-huff at my words, โI know, but just remember what weโre here for. . .an audition-โ
โ-an audition, which Iโm sure you will ace,โ The words came out slightly mocking towards Kou, though all was meant in good fun, as he seemed fairly unamused that I spoke alongside him; seeming to know what he was going to say.
โ-which Iโm sure you will ace!โ He would finish abruptly, cutting me off and gaining a rather amused look. He would shake his head, โBut we cannot forget that while beautiful, Paris can also be equally as dangerous! Weโre going in and out, alright?-โ
Kouโs words would be interrupted once more during our trip as a melodramatic sigh was drawn out from my lips. There was a silence that followed after, at least, for a moment before Kou filled it.
โFor being brought up in wealth, you surely act like a commoner.โ He would quip, watching as I took a playful, dramatic offense to his words. Like it had been a dagger in my heart, for he had insulted not only me yet my family and bloodline, including my dead relatives into the mix! Like it had been the most unproportional insult to the situation ever!
Though then he would receive a scoff, โAt least Iโm not acting as a babysitter!โ
โAt least I donโt need a babysitter-โ
โKou Minamoto!โ
โWhat? Itโs true! What am I here for? Surely not just for moral support, you said it yourself!-โ Kou rushed out, his hands gesturing out towards me before being held up as though a cop had found him guilty of a capital crime. โIโm here to act as a guard, babysitter, and moral support! With you? I have my hands completely filled playing those three roles and I donโt need for you to get injured or hurt or into some sort of trouble while weโre overseas!โ
While weโre overseas; He had a point, we were quite a bit away from home, and though we would have lavish accommodations during our three day stay, just long enough for the auditions and final casting, we were still not home. We were not with our families, in the safety and comfort of familiarity. Not even the Lotus Populaire was familiar to Kou nor I, as this would be both of our first instances seeing the new theater in all of its standing glory. And, throughout all of this, Kou was here to ensure I was both happy, suited, and safe. Even if he did call himself my babysitter, which was far from absurd because I simply did not need a babysitter at 21, almost 22! . . . He had a point.
And I would sink back against the seat, a defeated sigh leaving through my nose as Kou quirked a smile up at me. Carefully, he would rise from his seat parallel to mine and plop himself down next to me, drawing his arm over my shoulder and bringing me in close; A comforting side hug, his odd specialties, especially in a carriage ride.
โLet me hear your wisdom today, grandfather.โ I would tease before Kou even got a chance to speak. There was a roll of his eyes as his hand rubbed against my arm, both a playful warning to watch my wording and a comforting sensation that he was here; That while we were away from familiarity and home, he will do his best to fill such voids and gaps.
โMaybe, Iโll let you have a little fun.โ Kou started, peaking my attention, โA night in Paris, we can try that restaurant that you always wanted after your auditions tomorrow.โ He would offer as the carriage began to come to a slow halt, drawing out until the driver stopped it completely on the cobble streets.
There was a moment of blissful silence between Kou and I, a small moment shared in the comfort of the privacy of the carriage. Where not much had to be said other than a small, โI would like that,โ as the comfortable silence continued, with some sort of hesitation that lingered in the air. I would notice as Kou seemed to be debating something within his head, he always grew this slightly pensive look with frowned eyebrows and a slightly pouty lip; It was adorable.
โCome on, letโs get out of the stuffy carriage!โ I would exclaim, breaking the silence after a long, needed moment, as I grabbed Kouโs hand all too suddenly for him. He would jerk at the motion, seemingly being brought out of his thoughts as I opened the carriage door and, carefully, rushed down the steps to Kouโs protest. Though I barely was listening, it was Paris! And all at once it felt like the homesickness washed away, even for a moment, as I stood in front of the familiar apartment that the Minamotoโs used when they would travel down during season. Kou seemed just as relieved to see the old, but luxurious building as I was, as he parted to go pay the carriage driver and to handle one bag we each brought, full of belongings.
It had been a while since Kou and I had been able to visit the old Minamoto France apartment, for the family sparingly came to France anymore due to the old Opera House burning; And Iโm convinced that his father believes that itโll surely happen once more, and of course with the news of the mysterious chandelierโthat had been remade countless of times from the Opera Populaire and not moved into the Lotus Populaire, hanging above the seating in the auditoriumโfalling a handful of times for seemingly no reason solidified such fears within him.
So the apartment sat untouched, saved for some maids that did a routine bi-weekly clean on the old girl, simply to keep out the rats or possible insects that would enjoy to claim an untouched lavish apartment; Dressed in silks and fine leather and even finer wood, all importanted from the best salesman around the globe to provide the utmost comfort on a trip away from home.
โLouise!โ A smile beamed onto my face upon the door of the apartment opening. It stifled my giggle as I heard Kou, slightly, struggling with the baggage behind me.
Louise paused with a start, glancing over upon hearing the familiar yet aged voice of a girl she had known all too well. When her eyes rested on mine, a grin couldnโt help but form on her more wrinkled face before she left her post at the door, rushing over to press two greetings kissing upon my cheek. I would return in kind.
Despite being Minamoto's French-hired maid, Louise was nothing short of a miracle worker! Though by her appearance, I was sure not many would realize as such; For she was definitely on her aging years, where everything was slowly starting to take a toll on her yet she couldnโt bother to let such โabsurditiesโ โ in her own words โ show! She was a paler woman, who leaned upon the shorter side as well, who worked in the same clothes she had when she started, though you were sure she cleaned them well, with her hair graying caramel tied up in a tight bun. Yet, no matter her age, her eyes were as motherly as they always had been from the day I met her.
โAh, it has been simply too long!โ Louise would grin, her more boney hands finding their way around my shoulder, โCome! Come inside! Mrs. Minamoto already let me know of Kouโs and your arrival! Everything has been prepared, no need to stress. Iโm sure you had enough of that during your travels.โ
Her voice came off soothing, eager and chipper, as she led me into the living room of the flat, motioning for me to sit down on the couches. As I would do so, happily chatting to Louise about our journey from the little old Kingdom to France, Kou would stumble into the flat carrying two bags with a huff. The sound of the carriageโs horse trotting off could be heard through the door, yet you paid it no mind, as Kou would try to heavy the bags once more. . . despite his previous struggles.
Louise was quick to notice, and quick to have nothing of the sorts happening under this roof, โAh, ah! Little Viscount, put those bags down.โ She would scold, โYouโve had a long journey yourself, the luggage can be carried by another.โ
โLouise,โ Kou let out an airy laugh as she rushed over to him, ushering the bags to be placed by a wave of her hand. Kou, defeated and not wanting to hurt the old maid, placed the baggage down on the floor with a small, yet charming, smile. โWe donโt have anyone else to carry the baggage up, itโs completely alright. I can do it, no need for you tooโโ
โOh no need for that! Your father has hired a new assistant, due to my โold ageโ he says. I told him it was simply unneeded yet he insisted,โ There was a playful frown that twinged on Louiseโs lips as she spoke about the new assistant, or maybe her aging. I was sure it was a combination of both as she waved Kou to sit on the couches and make himself comfortable, all the while claiming she would go find the new butler.
โWell,โ Kou started as he stifled back a chuckle, walking around the couches and over to me. He would plop down on the couch, rather dramatically in my opinion, as his arms sprung out on the backside of the couch and his legs extended forward. โIโm glad to know Ms. Louise is as living as ever.โ
Kou would only receive a head shake in return, his foolishness sparingly getting a remark from me; As instead, I decided to take in the new furnishings of the apartment, as it had changed from my last visit. No longer was everything draped in pretty blues that compliment one another, yet instead had shifted to more browns mixed with maroon. It created a homey feeling, for sure, and no longer stuck out as strange to passersby on the street, who just so happen to peek inside. The living room in particular changed more, as the velvet deep navy couches no longer sat parallel to each other with a oak coffee table in between, yet was now replaced withย two maroon red couches shaped like an L, both plush and wrapped in silk, with a small table between them and a matching wool carpet below them.
It was a large change from the usual cooling blue tones to now a soothing, yet striking, maroon and spruce; Though it was somehow comforting, almost as though the room and furniture was enclosing to give me a great big, warming, hug after such a long journeyโwhich was enhanced more by the warm orange and pinks hues that filtered in through windows thanks to setting sun. I wouldnโt notice how my muscles would relax against the softer couches, how I had slumped a little, or how my eyelids began to droop ever so slightly.
Yet, Kou noticed and alerted me, gently, to the problem as soon as it came to his attention with a gentle nudge. I had possibly already dozed off, having been awoken to his soft voice, โMaybe you should head to bed,โ was his warming suggestion to my cold reply of a head shake. It would be improper to leave before meeting the new assistant that had been hired, furthermore to leave Kou by himself on the first night of Paris when we already have plans made!
โLottie,โ Though his sterner voice would seep through, mimicking that of his brothers, as he rose to his feet. His hands grabbed ahold of and intertwined with my own, slowly and carefully dragging me upon my suddenly aching feet. โIt was a good few hours from the steamer boat to the carriage ride, and frankly I feel theย fatigue nipping away at myself. Weโll push our plans back until tomorrow, you may simply just head to bed and Iโll stay to meet the new Butler.โ
There was a protest that dared to fall from my lips, though Kou was quick to hush the concerns, especially since he practically left me with no choice. He was stubborn, much so like his elder brother, and I was sure he would not quit until I was tucked into bed. So there was reluctant agreement on my part to his whole ordeal.
โGood, thank you, now to bed.โ There was a sly hint of concern that filtered through Kouโs words as he gave my hands one final squeeze, before the teasing followed, โI assure you the layout of the flat has not changed.โ
He would only get sarcasm in return, โVery funny Kou.โ Though I wouldnโt stay around longer than that, as I parted our hands every so slowly before turning sluggishly and exited the living room, walking down the hallways to Kou shouting something along the lines of โgood night!โ which I would mimic. My hand would rise to slide along the walls of the apartment, feeling the textured walls made out of the smooth wallpaper that I was too tired to pay attention to, run across my fingers as I walked up the hard wooden stairs. They still creaked, even if just a little in my imagination, as I walked up to them as they had done all the years ago.
Then down the hallway upstairs to a room nuzzled in the far end of the hall, on the left, near the window that peaked out onto the Paris streets, I would find my roomโor more promptly the guest bedroom that I had claimed my own, due to my constant visitationโand would open the door with a familiar swing. Slugging off my shoes, leaving them by the door, I found myself by the mirror that laid by my bed, though not facing it. Without much care, feeling the drowsing hands of sleep caressing my body, I would work on the layers of my clothing, dropping each one until I was suitable enough for bed; Most likely my under clothes that poor Louise would iron out later with a fuss, as a proper citizen would not sleep in such conditions!
Though, that would be a problem she would have to fuss about tomorrow, as I would climb into the plush bed and snuggle my way under the blankets. It all felt heavier, comforter, softer than I remembered them being and the question of if the Minamoto family had changed the bedrooms too crossed my mind. It didnโt get to linger long once my eyes fluttered closed, as the sweet release of sleep washed over my clouded mind.
It would simply have to be a question for tomorrow.

I . . . LITTLE LOTTIE
Between the fiber threads of dreams and hopes, there is both darkness and light, corruption and wonder, curiosity and incuriousness. Many hope to perform on the stage of an Opera house, especially one as grand as the Hasu ren Niki, or Lotus Populaire, which mimics its sister passed, The Opera Populaire; Built upon itโs rubble by a Japanese and French architects, trying to bring a Phoenix back from the ashes and revive a colorful hope into the dulling city once more.
It became a vital stop for any Prima Donnas and leading Tenors, the first lady and man of the stage, to perform for an audience that came from around the globe; from the New Americas to Europe and even Aisa. Where the height of their career would start and end, allowing them entrance to any other role in any Opera House around the world; For if you could perform on the stage of Lotus Populaire and receive astounding reviews from the critics of France, you'd become one in a million.
One in a million, that is something truly great to achieve; didnโt you know?
Though to become one in a million, you always have to start from somewhere; Just as a flower has to sprout from the ground before it blossoms into a flower, petals gleaming with color while scented oh so beautifully. For You, it began in Europe; more specifically, Britain, on a sweet countryside near the southernmost port.
Often you heard of the stories of the Opera Populaire from travelers. Stories of a majestic Opera house bathed in the glimmering gold with reflective flooring and tall, looming status of women. Of the Opera house with the most comfortable seating, varnished with a deep maroon that screamed lavish, wealth, success, Of the Opera house that spared no expense to have the most reputable, most angelic, most authentic Prima Donnaโs on this side of Europe, who sang with not only their voice yet their heart and soul; Whoโs acting was just as good as their singing, entrancing, encapsulating.
Few times did you actually manage to go see the Opera house yourself, most times you had to beg your father to let you tag along with the Minamotoโsโfamily friends who had moved to Europe from Japanโand who were wealthy enough to spare the expense to make a trip to the Opera Populaire every season.
Though you could not go every time, though you wish you wished you could, you would soak up every moment when you were inside its casted walls; Dancing along the polished floors with Kou as you both laughed and pretended to be the leading roles in your own opera on the stairs. His Mother and elder Brother would always scold you two for not acting your class, for not showing the restraint and regality of the upper class citizens of Europe. To which they always received a giggle and apology before you two rushed off to your private box for the show.
Even if some your age called it boring, you had always been entranced by Opera. You knew you wanted to be on that stage, singing and dancing and performing, even at your fatherโs slight distaste of your choice. It was the only option, and you would accept nothing less than to be performing on the grand stage of the Opera Populaire.
And even after itโs burning, that desire shifted to wanting to perform on the Lotus Populaire.
Kou always entertained your lofty dreams, sitting at the piano in your familyโs parlor room, to keep you company after your tutoring sessions; He would play the scale of your voice through the piano keys, slowly increasing before decreased once more, before performing a song for you to sing along to. It was always enchanting, at least for the skill of little children, no older than 12 years of age. Maids and Butlers would often stop to listen, occasionally would Kouโs brother sit in on the performance and give a solid clap when the two of you finished, compliments flooding out of his mouth.
The encouragement, much to your fatherโs ire, always convinced you to move forward and as such, what pushed you to audition at the Lotus Populaire for its next season of Hannibalโan opera about composed by Chalumeau about the return of carthaginian troops from fighting against roman soldiers; an opera that had been creating heavy traction and buzz, making global press. This, you were confident, would be the true start of your career in the Opera industry, not as a ballerina yet as a lead; Or, at least, you were shooting for ensemble at the minimum. You needed to get out of the local Opera theaters of London, where you have been performing since you were able to at the young age of 16; You were almost 22 now!
โJust to be clear,โ Your father started, watching as the carriage pulled into the cobbled driveway; A white stallion and its driver greeting your father, Kou, and you. โItโll be alright if you do not land a role, Iโll still be proud of you no matter what.โ You could hear the heistance in his voice as his hand took yours, his thumb brushing over the back of your hand in reassurance. A worrier, thatโs what your Father always had been; Since the moment you were born.
You couldnโt help but laugh softly, watching as Kou moved around you both to speak to the driver of the carriage, โFather, I will be fine, I promise! Kou is coming with me, Iโm more than prepared and Iโve been practicing since the news came out.โ You would try and reassure your own father, though watching as his eyebrows frowned up either way, โIโll be home in three days time!โ
โI know, I know,โ The heavy sigh left his lips, and you were sure all the oxygen had left his lungs too. There was a hesitation as his lips tugged to the sides, โI just wish I could be there with you; It is quite a long journey and your first time auditioning outside of the country. . . are you sure you donโt need me there? I can send a letter quickly to my work, surely theyโll understand the circumstances-โ
โYou worry more than there is need!โ Another soft laughter fluttered out of your lips; You wouldnโt realize the way Kou would smile softly at the sound from behind your back. โKou and I will be perfectly fine, now please, Iโll be late if you donโt let me go!โ
You saw the way his lips would tremble a little, the hardship of letting his child go, seeming too much to bear, even for him. And though it pained you to see your Father so upset at your departure, all the comfort you could give him in aid was one last, tight hug before you had to pull away. Hands firmly on the sides of his arm, you would bow your head lightly as he pecked a kiss on the top of your head.
โDonโt come home unless you score big.โ He would joke, one last time, as your hands fell from his shoulders. You would scrunch your nose at his comment, your lips wobbling with laughter as you playfully slapped his shoulder before departing for the carriage with a shake of your head; Meeting Kou, who would bow with just as much grace and teasement, as he opened the carriage door to let you in first before he joined you, sitting right by your side.
There was no more going back once the carriage door closed and the horse hooves began to clack on the cobblestone pavement, rolling the carriage effortlessly as it was majestically. You were sure tears sprang from your fathers eyes, as if it wasnโt for his job he would be joining Kou and you now on the cross-ocean trip to France. Itโll surely be a long journey, even longer without your Father to keep you entertained, yet you had Kou, and dare say, he was even better company! Funny, charming, and a little witty, he both was able to keep up with you and accept the high education you possessed, no matter the difference in gender.
โYouโre awfully quiet.โ The comment came out as teasing as you poked Kouโs side, his suit matching the color of his clan and complementing the color of his eyes; A nice blue, an attractive color, most would say. He would be more popular with the ladies if it wasnโt for his brother stealing the show.
Kou would hum, crossing his arms and leaning back against the plush seating, โJust thinking.โ Was his bland answer.
โThatโs new.โ Came the snicker that followed from you.
At least, thankfully, it had caught Kouโs attention as he glanced over towards you rather quickly; Seeming ready to defend himself, though the words left his lips before they even managed to bubble as soon as he saw your snicker. โVery amusing, Lottie.โ
Lottie, a nickname. The nickname Kou had decided would be yours since that day you met at his home, during a lavish house welcoming party. He said it suited you, you never understood why but accepted the nickname after countless tries of rebuking it.
โItโs true! You never think.โ You teased, poking his side once more and causing him to yelp. The oh-so professional Viscount in public was reduced to scrambling away from you in the carriage bound for the southernmost port in all of the United Kingdom! It was fairly amusing.
โStop that!โ Kou flushed as you would turn to him, daring to poke at his side once more. โYou know Iโm ticklish there! Donโt even start-โ
Though he would only yelp once more, making a grave effort to curl away from your finger as you dared it closer, โThen tell me whatโs the matter! Youโre usually so talkative, Viscount, now youโre nothing but stoic silence. It does not fit you at all! Are you concerned about little old me?โ You would tease and playfully gush, though knew it was most likely the truth. Kou had always been rather easy to read.
โIโm just concerned, that's all!โ He would exclaim, jumping to the seats parallel to yours on the opposite side of the carriage. It drew you to stopping your attacks on his sides, for now.
โConcerned about what? The admirers Iโm going to receive after becoming a lead?โ The words slipped out of your mouth, a dramatic flare being added to the end to show you werenโt being serious. You didnโt expect to get the leading role on your first show in the Lotus Populaire, you were smart to know that much. Though Kou would playfully roll his eyes, giving you an unamused โha-haโ, before shaking his head.
โIโm simply concerned about your safety and the travel! I mean, what if the boat sinks or we run into any of those weird French ghosts? It would be no place for you-โ Kou would start, gesturing with his hands as though this would cause a muck in the plans you had โoh-so carefullyโ laid out the night.
You would cut Kou off, though, pressing a finger firmly against his lips, โThen youโll protect me, simple!โ Your words came off with such confidence in Kou, that he couldnโt help but flush a little at the suddenness of your comment. His light blue eyes were stuck to yours, โWhatever comes, Kou, as long as I have you by my side, Iโm sure everything will be alright. Besides your brother and my father, youโre the strongest man, or even Viscount, I know. . . and itโs highly unlikely that the boat will sink!
So, relax a little, alright? Letโs enjoy this!โ
And though he was hesitant to respond, especially since your father had placed him in charge of your well being as well . . . as well as making sure you didnโt spend all of your money in France on meaningless items, he would nod; Something akin to pride swelling in his chest. If you believed in him, and if your father did as well, then surely he could keep you out of harm's way, no matter the danger. And to his response, he watched as you sat yourself back down, leaning against the plush cushions of the carriage.
Your gaze shifted from him to outside the window of the carriage, your eyes glimmering in the sun that basked inside. Hope, something like that at least, for a better future, shined in your eyes; And thatโs all Kou needed to relax himself. His body sank down into his cushioned seat, his eyes lingering on you for a second longer before they were also pulled to the window. The rolling hills of the Kingdomโs countryside were always beautiful, though, to Kou, you were more of a sight than anything nature could provide.

(- summary: "have you heard? . . ." )
"IN WHICH THE AUTHOR OF THIS SINGULAR WORK" SPOILS THE ENDING BEFORE THE STORY EVEN BEGAN; THAT IS, IF YOU TRUST ME.
โThere was an Opera House that sat in Flower Capital, which at its prime, housed the rich and wealthy for nights of ballet and song with a flowing, compelling, storyline that would create entertainment; the opera of the rich, being worked by the poor. It was one of the most popular Opera Houses on the Northside of Japan, bringing an audience from far and wide, drawing them in like moths to a flame. Bringing patronage as well as secrets that lurked in the shadows and murk.
Itโs widely known that the Opera house had burnt down, the chandelier having came crashing down for the final time during an Opera; Setting the place ablaze, burning with both passion and hatred for all those who had walked, dance, sang, worked, played, sewed, built, and lived within the Opera walls.
Though many knew of the burning, many did not know the cause: An asunder between the Phantom of the Opera and his beloved.โ
โ. . . The Phantom of the Opera?. . .โ
โSuch a curious tone you use to describe something that was no less of a Phantom as he was a Man, but yes, the Phantom of the Opera. A mysterious creature who worked in the dark of the Opera house, who lived deep down, so close to hell as the light of heaven burnt his fragile, paper-skin. And properly too, itโs said his face was as horrid as that of the devil himself and the deals he would create with the workers of the Opera House, mostly singers that had piqued his interest, even more monstrous.
He acted more like a monster than a Phantom or a Man! At least, thatโs what one man had cried, More monster than man! More monster than man, heโs dragged the poor singer down to his lair! Heโll burn them alive, toast and eat them for breakfast. More monster than Phantom! More monster than Man!
Though he would never truly do that to his victims, at least not that we know. Much of the Phantomโs life is a mystery, strung in the air for all to guess and wonder at, for as we know heโs dead and buried beneath the rubble of the Opera house. . . though his body was never recovered.โ
โHow. . . does a Phantom even die?โ
โA broken heart, at least, thatโs what the Daroga claimed after receiving several letters between the Phantom and the singer he held captive, bondaged in the ropes of misleading love.
Though if we had heard from the Viscount, the Patronage of the Opera House, that would very much be a different story.โ
โThe Viscount?. . . Viscount Minamoto, for the Minamoto clan?-โ
โYes, the same Minamoto clan who happened to own a haunted Opera house! It is always amusing to read the managerโs letters when he figured out that he had bought a haunted building. After all, they are exorcists, and well respected ones at that.โ
โ. . . dare I ask what ever happened to the Viscount?โ
โIt was a terrible accident.โ
