the red wedding in asoiaf, the trojan horse in the odyssey, the backstabbing leading to the bloody baptism in the nibelungenlied, even oppenheimer and his atom bomb…. all stories about how the violent breaking of a certain social norm or law of warfare breaks the whole world apart on the psychic plane to reveal the blood roiling underneath. but this can easily be levied into a conservative, great-man, one single man or choice can decide our destinies sort of idea, even with good intentions…. what’s crucial in these stories is not that That specific event is the original sin of the world from which all other sins emerge, but that it is only a (uniquely remarkable) byproduct of the *existing* systems of that world, which reward and feed off blood! that there is no Good society to return to, no law of warfare that would make war acceptable

Phossy jaw, known technically as phosphorus necrosis of the jaw, is a necrosis of the bone in people who were exposed to phosphorous vapor.

This occupational disease was commonly seen in workers in match-making factories in the 19th and early 20th century. The London match girl strike in 1888 attracted attention to the cause, and prompted the opening of a match factory that used red phosphorous, which was considered safer.

Despite the fact that the cause of phossy jaw was identified as early as 1844, legislation prohibiting the use of white phosphorus in British match factories was not enacted until 1910. The elimination of white phosphorus in British match factories eventually eliminated the disease in England. In 1913, the U.S. chose to place a "punitive tax" on white phosphorus-based matches that was so high in made manufacturing them unrealistic.

I don’t necessarily agree that ASOIAF is entirely anti war or anti violence or that it posits that performing violence corrodes your soul. Refer to the Fevre Dream “some things have to be ended with fire and blood” quote and look at Dany killing slavers… The point of her arc is that trying to do it diplomatically and capitulating to their demands isn’t working. There’s a time and place for pacifism and there’s a time and place for brutal change
