Margaret Atwood, The Animals in That Country; from ‘Speeches for Dr Frankenstein’
TEXT ID: you dangle on the leash of your own longing; your need grows teeth.
Jinu whispers to her from inside her sword...
*polytrix toddler, throwing a Massive tantrum beside their rooftop swimming pool*
Mira: *frantic* agi, just tell me what’s wrong!
Toddler: *scream-crying, trying to shove their floaties back at Zoey as she tries to put them on the toddler*
Rumi: *stressed* baby, you love the pool. Use your words, please tell us why you’re so upset!
Toddler: *keeps shoving floaties at Zoey and crying*
Zoey: baby, I don’t need your floaties. Do you want me to go in the pool with you?
Toddler: *inconsolably sobbing even louder*
Mira: *pulling toddler into her arms* hey, hey, okay, just let it out *bouncing toddler on her hip, frantically trying to calm the screaming child*
Zoey: *struggling to stand up with her very pregnant belly* Rumi, help me-
*Rumi pulls Zoey to her feet, a hand under her belly to brace her. Toddler starts screaming even louder into Mira’s ear, throwing their last floatie right at Zoey’s belly. Lightbulb goes off over Rumis head*
Rumi: … honey, are you trying to give the new baby a floatie?
Toddler: *sniffling and whimpering, but nodding* not… saaafe 🥺🥺🥺
*collective sounds off all three members of Huntrix turning to absolute mush*
Zoey: aww, baby!!! *takes toddler into her arms, presses kisses all over their face*
Rumi: oh my god. That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen 😭😭😭
Mira: *clutches chest and sinks to the floor*
Zoey: *wraps one of the toddlers arm floaties around her wrist* there. Baby’s all safe, sweetheart. You ready to go swimming now?
Toddler: *nods, tears drying*
Zoey: *dresses the toddler in the rest of their floaties and heads into the pool with her, hand in tiny hand*
Mira: *still on ground, head in hands* oh my god
Rumi: *tearing up* I know 😭😭😭
Mira: … I want another one 😭😭😭

had a #blender thought while reading a great fic (bracing for impact, by prose_and_pears on ao3).
i need rumi being held, cradled, so carefully by mira and zoey, one of them stroking her hair, holding her like she’s the most precious in the world. which she is was to them.
and then i need one of them, i don’t care who, killing her. mira, i think. holding rumi’s saingeom while her other arm is supporting rumi’s body, zoey holding her up the rest of the way because rumi is shaking so much she can’t hold her own weight.
i think it would be slow. mira would hesitate, of course she would. hell, i can’t come up with a situation where they would go through with killing rumi, but they’re doing it, so everything must have gone to shit.
so mira brings the sword up. rumi’s not really fully aware but her hazy eyes are opened just enough to see the movement. to assess it. to track mira’s hand, gripping *her* soul weapon, and to close her eyes and nuzzle further into mira’s other palm, and focus on the feeling of zoey’s nails running through her hair.
zoey is undoing her braid, she would realise. she doesn’t have the wits to wonder why. she’s never really let them see her with her hair down, but she’s never let them see her patterns either, so why can’t her last day be a day of firsts?
she’s not shaking, mira realises as she holds the tip of the saingeom to rumi’s chest. she’s purring. her throat is twitching ever so slightly, and there’s a sure, hearty rumble growing from her body.
cats purr when they’re happy. mira knows this. cats also purr to self soothe.
rumi’s a demon, not a cat, so mira doesn’t try to decide which one is happening. she can’t trust biology if she can’t trust the love of her life her best friend.
rumi isn’t watching. she’s purring and she’s just happy to finally let herself rest in the arms of her girls. her girls, her soulmates, her loves.
mira can’t take the waiting anymore. she knows she’ll never get the chance to hear rumi’s newfound purr again and she can’t let herself want it.
so she pushes.
rumi bleeds out in their arms.
they stroke her hair as she dies.
she’s smiling.
she can finally meet her eomma, they hope.
she’ll never find that afterlife. she’ll stay with them, following them, haunting them, forever.
she’s never been anything without her girls, after all.
:)
Zoey: *suddenly launches herself onto Rumi’s lap* Hey, there, pretty lady.
Rumi, easily catching her: Hi.
Zoey: You come here often?
Rumi: I do, believe it or not.
Zoey: Wow, a swanky place like this?
(They are in their penthouse)
Rumi: Are you saying this place is too good for me?
Zoey: No, I’m saying you’re too good for this place.
Rumi: Well, well. You sure know how to make a girl swoon.
Zoey: I’ve been told that before.
Rumi: Oh, yeah? You got a girlfriend, cutie pie?
Zoey: Cutie pie? That’s a bit forward, isn’t it?
Rumi: Only if I haven’t already swept you off your feet.
Zoey, smirking: Touché.
Rumi: Now, you haven’t answered my question. Do you have a girlfriend?
Zoey: I do. How about you?
Rumi: I do.
Mira, whose lap Rumi has been sitting on the whole time: Yeah, and can said girlfriend get in on this or are you two dorks just gonna keep this routine up?
Rumi and Zoey: Woah!
Rumi: Are you seeing this?
Zoey: Wow, another pretty lady!
Rumi: I think I hit the jackpot tonight!
Zoey: No, I think I hit the jackpot tonight!
Mira, absolutely, devastatingly in love with both of them: I can’t stand you two.

I was bored
i do not want to live in the fucking panopticon fuck the camera that blinks above me at work, the tv watching me at the store, the "smile you're on camera" signs, the ring cameras, the flock cameras, the apps to track your child or partner, the activist friends telling me "just assume everything you do in public is being recorded somewhere", the government building protester databases, the teslas recording every move all around them, the knowledge that everything i type or search or save is being tracked and logged, the ads and search suggestions that mysteriously know what i was just talking about, the way biometrics keep creeping into more places, the way my car spies on me, the way my phone spies on me, the way there is nowhere to go to get away from it!!! no wonder the internet is full of vindictive little stalkers and witchhunts when it's the water and the air of society from the culture to the infrastructure
Please remember that almost everyone around you is traumatized. I didn’t understand this when I was younger. I wondered why people acted so strangely and irrationally. Maybe all children wonder this. The author Robert Anton Wilson said (paraphrasing), “We have never seen a completely sane adult human.” No one makes it out of this life alive. It’s not their fault. Mercy, kindness, forgiving — these are what makes one human. They are other names for love. People break in the strangest of ways.
“Under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. we have never seen a totally sane human being." — Robert Anton Wilson
