And tell me why Percy is so Victor Frankenstein (book) coded?
(Spoilers for season 3, by the way! I’ve seen up to episode 4)
In the beginning of the book Frankenstein/The Modern Prometheus, Dr. Frankenstein is said to have come from a happy, wealthy home with lots of family, just like Percy.
When Frankenstein was young, he had an interest in alchemy, he was a good student. When he got older, he became more interested in biological science, realizing that he could bring a person to life, and he was Possessed by a scientific fervor, which he described as like being in a trance. He neglected his family, fiancée, and childhood friend, all of whom he deeply cherished, and he stopped going outside for about a year, focusing solely on his scientific endeavor.
Percy, however, had no one to neglect. He was hellbent on revenge and he too worked tirelessly on his creation. Except unlike Frankenstein, he was Literally Possessed during his scientific endeavor, building the pepperbox.
When Frankenstein’s creature finally comes to life, his scientific fervor is broken, and he finally realizes what he created, looking upon his creature with hatred, disgust, and fear.
Unlike Dr. Frankenstein, however; Percy is fond of the pepperbox at first. It isn’t until Percy loses control that he is filled with fear at the sight of the demon- his demon, his creature, and his inability to fight it (at first).
In the original Frankenstein, the creature is actually intelligent- he can read, he speaks French, he makes a bargain with the doctor (make me a wife and I’ll stop killing your loved ones). While Orthax has a very one-track mind, he’s intelligent, too. He saw Percy’s lust for vengeance and knew he’d found a good opportunity. Orthax did also try to kill Percy’s loved ones (Vox Machina, Cassandra), like The Creature.
After Frankenstein strikes a deal with his creature, he becomes afraid that if he builds his creature a wife, that they may procreate. Terrified, he destroys the half-formed woman right in front of the creature.
In season 3 of Vox Machina, Ripley tells Percy to help make a machine so she can make more pepperboxes, which he agrees to do, and then destroys it in front of her and Orthax.
Both the creature and Orthax, when they realize they won’t get what they want, try to kill the scientists.
Both the doctor and Percy, upon noticing the effects of their creations, hesitate to act. Frankenstein’s creature commits a murder, and he lets an innocent person take the fall. As Vox Machina ventures through Whitestone, it becomes apparent to them that “the smoke” (the pepperbox, Orthax) is becoming a problem. They point this out to Percy, but he brushes it off.

The campaign becomes a lot of side quests and trades so you can get things to trade for other things to trade for Asmodeus’ prom photos so you can give them to his ex wife in exchange for epic cosmic power.
There’s no one bad guy. It’s all side quests.
You want epic cosmic power? Get the cup to get the teddy bear from the troll to get the bejeweled dagger for someone else and so on and so forth until you get the pictures and the power.
